Just a cute baby pic. Now this baby has grown into a beautiful athletic figure skater.

Happy birthday to you, Ksu!

It's Sunday, and I welcome you back to our "Look how stupid your coaches looked when they were juniors, they'll never show you that" challange. Irina Zhuk's group programs are, well, let's call it that, unexpected decisions. I don't even know what to say. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you teenagers Denis Lunin and Valeria Loseva, and they will dance cancan for you in the best traditions of the Moulin Rouge. No, throwing money on the ice is forbidden.

I clearly understand that it`s buffoonery and circus, plus a little eroticism (a little...), and this style also has fans, but... Thank heavens that Lunin, when he became a choreographer, shows much more good taste in creating programs. He could create something like this.

Sunday isn't over yet, so I'm running an extra video as part of a challange to soften the impression of young Lunin's unbridled cancan. In fact, I found something interesting, and I want to share it with you. There was a video of the coach this morning, now of one of the juniors. I found a video of a children's show in which Max Chernykh participated, and I really want to share it. It's the 2017-2018 season, Maksim is 9 y.о. In the interview, his mom says they only started figure skating a year ago. When Maksim came to the ice, he didn't even know how to skate, and in just one year he mastered the entire line of single jumps, including axel.

Over the next five seasons (2017-2018 through 2021-2022 ) he was able to go to a highly qualified coach and master the entire lineup of double and triple jumps, excluding the triple axel, I could say this guy did a tremendous job. I'll be cheering for him even more now, all things considered, and the fact that he missed almost the entire 2022-23 season due to injury.

Anton Shulepov gave a master class for young figure skaters from Orenburg. These kids are so lucky!

Good Wednesday morning, folks! I'm happy to welcome you back to my "When it all just started" Challenge and we're back to junior day. Today we're going to focus on a humble junior who's always hiding in the shadow of his more successful brother.

Timofei Shelkovnikov evokes very fond memories for me, once I saw him live at junior competitions in my city, he was very small, but skated very well for the regional level and won the competition. Today I will show you the programs of the 2020-2021 season from competitions in Omsk. Here Timofei shows a teenage stiffness that he didn't have when he was nine or ten years old. But he performs his content quite confidently and looks good on the ice.

Next season Timofei and Dmitriy will move to Davydenko's group, and we will be able to see the changes. Don't miss one of the next Wednesdays, I remind you, there will be many more. We will continue until mid-September.

Nastya Mishina (pair skating, paired with Aleksandr Galliamov) thanks Kirill Davydenko for the new cascade she learned at the training camp in Sochi.

While Olga Belkina was working with his boys, Kirill was working on the pairs skaters from Moskvina group and Velikov`s group.

What I've always wanted - Dima Shelkovnikov takes his example from the plastic Anton Shulepov.
Well done, guys, this new step sequence should be a flaming.

Anton Shulepov is warming up the little skaters from Orenburg before they hit the ice.

I'm going to follow this guy's coaching career closely. Not only is he a great figure skater, but he also has the makings of a good teacher, which is important for a coach

Ksenia Gushchina received the title "Master of Sports of Russia".
This is a very important stage in the career of a professional figure skater.

Our congratulations to Ksenia and all her coaches!

Dmitriy Shelkovnikov changes before my eyes. He becomes relaxed and plastic, the teenage awkwardness of movements is gone.

Thanks to Anton for the excellent work!

Good morning, folks! Life goes on, our "When it all just started" сhallenge goes on too, nothing changes. Sunday, so it's time to talk about one of the coaches. You already know that I have a really good feeling for Anton Shulepov. I'm happy to see his successes as a coach. That's one of the reasons I'm very sad to take apart his career. This guy with such useful qualities, patient, hard-working, could have achieved more, but... how many of those " buts" in the world of big sports.

Let's just analyze the 2016-2017 season. Anton didn't make the national team, but he has enough international competitions: Winter Universiade 2017, Golden Spin of Zagreb, Tallinn Trophy, Coupe de Nice. He got high level programs for the first time (SP - Nemesis by Benjamin Clementine, FS - Nessun dorma by Luciano Pavarotti), probably the coaching staff hoped to promote Anton before the Olympic season. It seems like everything was done... and he loses start after start, not making it into the top 5, and sometimes even into the top 10. He loses the national championship and the finals of the Russian Cup, narrowly missing the end of the top-10 and loses his chances of making the national team in the Olympic season, which almost eliminated his chances of fighting for a spot on the Olympic team the next season.

There are many reasons why Anton couldn't get what he wanted. These are the late transition from a regional coach (until 18 years he represented the regional center Vladimir) to a professional coach, and the inevitable errors associated with the wrong technique getting in his youth. It's a mature age (he's 21 this season) and a lot of injuries piled up. It's a missed year - Anton was drafted into the army. It`s probably the lack of natural talent for the study of jumps, each skater is given one thing. All of these things together made a difference. But it's a pity that a guy with such talents of plasticity, gliding, presentation, musicality couldn't reach a high level. It's hard to find malice here, it's a set of circumstances, which is often called fate.

Anton's chances of making it into the top Russian skaters were thinned every year, a new generation with more complicated content was growing up, but he was not getting younger and not getting better. All this led to a predictable result. But we'll talk about that later, when the time comes. Today are the beautiful programs of the 2016-2017 season.

Video from the gym. A day of physical training at the training camp.
Anton is no longer a competitive athlete, but in great physical shape.

Wednesday, junior day in our Challenge. This time we again look at Arseniy Dimitriev, a kid with artistry and charisma, although with mistakes in technique.
In the 2017-2018 season Arseniy is starting to transform from a kid to a teenager, he's dense, chubby and informal for figure skating. Despite this (thanks to his muscles?), he is quite impetuous and makes a lot of movements on the ice without any visible effort. Still far from perfect jumping technique and non-jumping elements, especially noticeable problems with spins. But at the same time... he is soooo free!
In the short program, only the costume was changed, from pink to purple Kolyada style. But in the free program the incredibly popular song of rock musician Kipelov "Ja svoboden" (I am free).

Only a provincial junior could afford such musical variety! Not Carmen, not Notre Dame, not Romeo and Juliet, not Malagenia - Russian rock. He didn't care what the judges thought. It's so cool!

Olga Belkina, physical training coach of the Davidenko Band, gave a short interview about the peculiarities of her work with figure skaters. I recall that Olga is a former professional athlete, was involved in athletics, and participated in the 2012 Olympic Games. At the present time she is engaged in physical training of athletes: figure skating (singles, pairs, synchronized), hockey, volleyball. We are, of course, interested in the physical training of figure skaters. Olga doesn't tell us much, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Olga Belkina
MSMK in athletics, physical fitness coach at the Figure Skating Academy
“I work with athletes of all ages - both beginner skaters and athletes of the national team. Therefore, of course, not all skaters have the same training. There is a certain backbone plan, but it differs depending on age, previous injuries, on the level of the athlete, on the tasks for the season, on the number of training sessions per week. We take into account the features of singles, pairs, and synchronized skating. In synchronized and pair skating, for example, grips and supports are very necessary; in singles, on the contrary, less attention can be paid to hands. From the outside, it seems that it doesn’t look so hard for pairs and synchronized, but then they come to me with all their shoulder blades turned out.”
