Deniss Vasiljevs

Deniss and Stéphane are skating a duet to Chopin!

I was already loving it when I thought it was Stéphane’s new program, but then Deniss joined and I almost fell out of my chair. It’s so gorgeous. The side by side 3lz, the spread eagles...and all the subtle moves and coordination that you only get working together regularly.

It’s so rare to have a duet where the skaters get to practice together long enough to make it complex and polished (and this they said isn’t finished, but it’s already so good). I hope we see the full thing at FaoI but I feel so blessed to have seen this work in progress!

Deniss Vasiljevs & Stephane Lambiel. Open practice in Daugavpils: learning to fly :-) :) :yay:  (Fly with them :-)) :)

I :luv17: both of these, but especially the Chopin!!! These are the moments when I'm so grateful to be a figure skating fan!!! Poetry in motion!!! Hopefully we'll get to see the finished versions, but I am already in heaven with the practice videos!!! One sure sign of a work of art is when a practice video moves you deeply like this. :agree2:

I've found a very old interview (the one the references to Napoleon and Suvorov in the last Latvian interview comes from, I suppose) and decided to link it here as maybe I'm not the only one who likes to follow Deniss' personal development through his interviews :)

This one was taken in February 2015 and it's incredible to think how much Deniss’ life and career have been changed since then. Old innocent times when he could eat everything including sweets  and dreamt about Olympics in Korea...

One hasn't changed for sure: the questions, so you can find my “favourite” about girls and plans for the future (and he was 15 at the time, LOL).

Let me quote some questions (and comment the answers :slink:).

I: What kind of girls do you like?
D: It’s too early for me to think about girls, but altogether I like the blondes. It has been scientifically proven that they have a special effect over men.
Do you know any other 15 y.o. who explain his attitude to specific kind of women by scientific sources?
By the way, do you think that Deniss had something to do with a process of accepting ladies for the Latvian camp as all of them were blondes? ;)

I: Have you thought about your future after you leave the sport?
D: I do not exclude the possibility that in the future I will have my own business. I want to create my own clothing line, I want to organize competitions and ice shows. And more - I have a dream to become an ISU judge.
I'd like to have people like Deniss and his attitude to figure skating in ISU authorities.

I: Don’t you envy your peers who have much more free time and can go out and have fun?
D: No, I do not envy them. I cannot imagine my life without figure skating. Let everyone live as they want.
Great as a general watchword

To reach happiness I need a lake, a forest, a mountain and a house on the hill. Then everything will be fine.
So now he’s been living in the environment he dreamt of and his answer to the question about hapiness is “What is hapiness overall”? That’s worrying (or he’s just extremely tired...)

And the last one, with the answer that astonished the journalist (and me as well). The "Lion King" reference three years ahead ;)
I: Deniss, what is the meaning of life?
D: Continuing the life through children. To help your child to develop as much as possible, to provide your child with all the necessary so they can develop.
I: Unexpected response.

:thank: for the interview link!

I'm sorry Deniss but this is just really funny to me! :laugh2:

I wouldn't be so quick to assume he's unhappy. Life changes a lot from 15 to 18, for any teenager. I think he just grew up.

Now I wish that they asked that question again as well.

I found a video of the interview the ISU did after the Men's SP (these make up the ISU quick quotes). https://www.instagram.com/p/BjFAxtpD01u/
It's not really anything new, but it's nice to see it because these little interviews never get shown on Eurosport or BBC for example.

Kobe: June 15-17; Niigata: June 22-24; Shizuoka: June 29 - July 1. It's going to be a long, nice stay in Japan

I'm pretty sure they will repeat their programs every time (in other case some spectators could be disappointed ;))

And now I have very important request: could you also predict GP in Grenoble (and the challenger in Bratislava instead of Bergamo/Obersdorf/Espoo/Oakville/Salt Lake City) for Deniss, please?:laugh:

PS. I've just realised that the greetings for FoI must have been recorded before they moved to Latvia (as Stephane is in Japan now and Deniss is taking his exams). So if the program was ready at that time I imagine how hard they tried to not reveal it in Daugavpils

I spotted that despite the answers being the same as the ISU quick quotes this interview is actually conducted by J-Sports

So glad we get to see the duet program at FaOI! Can't wait!

Stephane had a talk at Deniss' school while he was in Latvia. Deniss joined him too of course. Lucky kids!
In addition to everything he has done for promoting figure skating in Latvia, Deniss introduced his coach (who is one of the most interesting persons in the field and a lovely human being) to his schoolmates. If they haven't fallen in love with figure skating altogether I don't know what shall be done more ;)

I always forget how the GP assignments work. Will Deniss have 1 assignment or 2? I am hoping to go to Sk Canada and wonder if there is a possibility to see him there. I guess we have more than a month to speculate about who will go where! :sad4:

Deniss was 6th at Worlds so he will be seeded for two events, together with Alexei and Kazuki.
Till now he went to Rostelecom and NHK, twice. In 2016 it was 3rd and 6th GP event, in 2017 - 1st and 4th.
I'm pretty sure he wants to go to Japan again, but in the group of three he will be drawn together with Kazuki. Since Yuzu probably will be invited to NHK, I wonder if Kazuki wants to go there (Shoma usually avoided NHK because of Yuzu). So there is still a chance that Deniss will go to NHK. If so, and as I don't think he will decide to go to back-to-back competition, Rostelecom and CoC are the least probable. I'd say Skate Canada or IdF as a second event.
On the other hand he's never taken part in 2nd and 5th event. This year it's Skate Canada and Rostelecom :scratch2:

The shapes on the ice are called special figures - Stephane set up a Facebook page talking about these a few years ago, although it's never been updated.

(At least I think it's his page - it's linked directly from his personal website.)

https://stephanelambiel.com/

At the 1908 Olympic Games, competitors in the special figures event rivalled in imagination and skill to create geometric patterns using the tracings left on the ice by their blades. The discipline was unfortunately lost in the modernization of the sport, replaced by the easier-to-judge but less inspiring compulsory figures. Stéphane proposes to rediscover this fascinating form of skating that is both fun to practice and beautiful to watch. Try it yourself and show us what you can do.
