Deniss Vasiljevs

Okay. So today the jumps were a little bit less messy, apart from the missed combo (and Stéphane got a bit furoius about that, rightly so).
But now the presence was not there, at least it felt like that. Very weird. Like the body doing things and Deniss following, but not actively engaging (?).

We all have those days, when work is just "work" and you'd love to stay in bed with the the duvet over your head. Maybe it was just one of those days for Deniss.

The FS now seemed fine again with the judges, concerning construction and choreo. Well.

I really hope for another competition in about 2-3 weeks time. Maybe something a little bit bigger so that he's not having pressure to win adding to whatever blocks him at the moment.

I do think that second or first here was not what mattered to him anyway, just in case it could be better to throw him out there where others will eye for the podium so that he can really focus on a crisp presentation. And ideally with a comfortable journey. :ghug:

It was a very tough skate to watch. I really hope he is able to work through whatever is blocking him at the moment and have a wonderful skate at Worlds.

Deniss seemed to be disconnected in the way he was at last Worlds as if he wanted to get it over with as soon as possible... That's such a difference to his performances at Art on Ice, where he was visibly overjoyed to be there. Tough experience, but hope he can take it as it was - B competition just for the ranking.
Wish him to take a good rest to regain strength and prepare well for the most important competition of the season.

I would not compare a show (no matter how big it is) to a competition (no matter how small it is).
He just can't be or fake happy(ness) all the time. And that's okay. But I believe he can learn how to feel that way and perhaps show it but skate clean or clever (combo) nevertheless.

The way he did it today is rare for him, that's why fans are shocked a bit. But remember, there's lots of other skaters and their fans who experience those days more often. Consistency is nothing that just finds you and it's hard work and can easily slip away from you. Deniss is not "known" for his recent struggles which is a good sign 🙂

And the way the team did it from SCI to MKJWT shows it's not a season to forget about completely.

The programs now are perhaps (esp. the FS) on another level because that's something you would not risk in an olympic season but start after that. So they attacked this cycle in full force and that's something he perhaps hasn't done before. That can be intimidating /freaking you out. In addition to the raised pressure he puts on himself and the "greed" for bigger scores.

Not his day. Some really uncharacteristic mistakes (especially 3F). He should've remembered about the combo, that's true. But he wasn't even sure he could be there, so let's hope he regroups and leaves it behind quickly.

I'm curious if the low temperature played any part (apart from fatigue). He was warming up on the ice in a hoodie.

Oh yes, I also wondered if it got colder? I also saw that he used a black jacket all the time on the FS day whereas he usually doesn't wear one for the warmup. He didn't wear one for he SP.

The rink was very cold especially the second day. But also rinkside in Champéry is very cold and the coldest rink I have ever been to (where Deniss also competed) was in Sisak 2021 (Golden Spin of Zagreb). So I don’t think this was the main issue.

He himself said he didn’t know why it happend.

The day stuck at the airport was surely not in his favour but he is a person that would never blame any outside circumstances.

To cheer him and the fans up I talked to him about Art on Ice and he said he had a great time there.
As I saw the question a lot on twitter I asked him what his favourite Satoko program was.
To read here:

Wishing him a good rest and some calm days before Worlds!

Interesting excersise for team Champery (plus Satoko :))
