I have to have an emergency extraction tomorrow... it's been a problem with my back molar for over two months and they just now got me in (it's technically not an emergency because if it were they would have fit me in sooner, but that costs $$ that I don't have lol so I toughed it out)

I've had nothing but horrible experiences with dentists, and I'm praying this new guy will be the exact opposite....

Don't drink anything cold or hot after the dental work...only tepid. I had my molars taken out years ago and was not informed that what I drank should be room temp. I was soooo thirsty I drank a huge class of cold grape gatoraid and for a moment, it tasted so good. Then the pain set in....owie!!!!

Just try to relax when you're in the chair. It shouldn't take long. Sometimes the injections are worse that the other. Good luck.

Oh man, I just hate the dentist! Even going for a cleaning has been awful lately. A few years ago I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at once...I swear the pain was worse 3 days later than the day they did it. (which they said was normal!) Good luck to you Toni!

It must be in the air! I cracked a molar a few weeks ago and got a crown last week ( first crown for me..) It was really hurting, so I am happy that the tooth ache is gone, but it was not a cheap experience! Gosh, my parents have had to have a good bit of dental work done over the years, and I really didn't appreciate what I was missing- so to speak.

I hope your extraction went well, Toni! Best wishes from me....

I cracked a molar last fall. It had to be taken out since it was at the base. It can be freaky but you just gotta concentrate on breathing steadily and think of something else.

It's healed well, but I keep on forgetting to make an appointment for the implant.

I've had an appalling amount of dental work, mostly because my adult teeth came in with almost no enamel.

If you have a crown done, my advice is never have anything fitted with Novocain in. The pain you have at the dentist will be more than offset by the pain you'll have if you catch food in the new crown or if the crown has to be reworked, which can happen if you can't feel whether the crown fits correctly.

Good luck with the new dentist Toni!

Doris, that is uncanny that you said that because my temporary crown was "too high" for just that reason ( my bite was off because of the novocaine for the "build-up"). I didn't get real relief until they put the permanent crown in and they didn't numb it then so the bite is good now. I was crabby dental trauma girl for awhile there! I am hoping for a reprieve ( until I get this paid off!). I think I was spoiled because I haven't had much decay, just wear. I guess I had to join the fun eventually!!

well the dentist refused to extract the molar considering it is my back one and I "need" that one

never mind I have a wisdom tooth back there ready to come in and it could easily slip in and take the place (my old dentist did that with my top teeth and no complaints... but he was a very untrustworthy dentist in other ways)... but I was vetoed by the new guy which really annoyed me.

so in the next few months my parents will spend upwards of 2200 dollars for me to get a root canal and crown. IT SUCKS.

Sorry to hear all that, Toni. I just don't know what else to say. :frown: May you get through the next steps as painlessly as possible.

wow 2200 for a root canal and a crown? That's a great deal of money. My root canal was a 125 dollar co pay and the crown was 250. do you have dental insurance?

Well hope it all goes well for you Toni.

sll - I am too old to be on my dad's insurance anymore, and we never had dental insurance...

the crown alone is 1000 bucks... which I think is ridiculous but my aunt swears this guy is the most resonable and the best. I personally think he's just like every other dentist out there, all about the $$.

that stinks..crown charge seems right. My insurance covers 50% of crown costs and I had to pay around $400-500. And if youa re in Alaska, there's that increased $ factor.

yeah I hate that we're a US state and the US charges us more for shipping and everything... we might as well go back to being a territory, we had more success then! LOL

oh well... I'll just suck it up and get it done... we may wait on the crown until after summer... I just don't have the time monday - friday once I start work!

I agree w/your statement about dentists being all about the $$$.....I just hope after you have all that work done that your tooth is okay......I know people who've had work done and the tooth still had to be pulled and that sucks!! I've changed my kids dentist because the last one was all about the money, and we have insurance, which only seems to cover cleanings...everything else we pay...somethings are 50% covered, some 20%...it's crazy. My oldest son needed braces they were 4800.00.....insurance only covered 1500.00!!! Never mind the retainer afterward......the worst one was my yougnest son was sitting on his dads lap when we was about 4 years old...and flung his head back catching my hubby in his mouth...knocking his two front teeth loose.....the dentist couldn't save them.....We are still paying that bill monthly can my yougnest is will be 7 years old soon! Apparently the insurance companies don't think front teeth are a necessity !!!!!

I have dental coverage, but it only covers one cleaning per year. I go twice a year for cleanings and twice for scaling. I figure I'm better off paying to get my teeth taken care of now vs later.

I can relate. I had the abscessed tooth from **** - you know where and suffered with it for over two years and that was after an extensive root canal. My tooth turned into a nightmare. I finally had to go to a Dental specialist and have it redone. I have been relatively pain free for about six months now, but even now and then I still get some grief from this darn tooth. I call it my "trick knee" tooth. I am determined to keep it now after all of that.

I hope your trip to the dentist will result in a happy outcome! All the best
