It is with regret that I have to announce that there will be no woman representing our country at the WC as Niki Wories did not manage to get the minimums. In fact she was pretty far off at Bellu Memorial (she ended there in 6th place). And that was the last chance....

I think Niki put too much into the first half of the season and then ran out of steam. She peaked around December, and needed really to peak for Euros. I'm sure it's the sort of thing her team will look at before next season.

I hope so too. However I know how much she wished to be able to participate in the OG, and skating FS at Worlds this season would have ensured that (no other Dutch Woman is at that level). Now she will have to qualify through the 'Nebelhorn' process (which now takes place in China). and funding is a thing....Well, maybe the FS is too much to aim for in any case, so the Chinese qualifier would be necessary anyway.

The Dutch Skating Federation announced today that Daria/Michel (pairs) as well as Chelsea/Sherim (ID) will represent The Netherlands at the WC in Boston. Other Skaters and Dancers have no World minimums.

Julia van Dijk is an entree at the Maria Olszewska Memorial in Poland. Good to see her doing competitions after her injury.

At the Coupe du Printemps in Luxembourg from 14-16 March there will be quite a few Dutch skaters.

In senior women, Julia van Dijk, Jolanda Vos and Niki Wories will take part.
In junior women we can expect: Noa Fay Cappenberg, Lucca Dijkhuizen, Kahlan Gooijer, Meagan Kelders, and Pheline Wisse.
In advanced novice boys: Leon Lo.
In advanced novice girls: Elsbeth Mark, Elina Sucur, Ksenia Usenko, and Summer Wijkhuizen.

There are also 11 Basic novice girls attending, but I am not going to list those. I will of course if they win one or more medals, mention them.

I wish them all a great competition! :hap10::hap10:

At Coupe du Printemps (even the name sounds right as there is a lot of sunshine outside)
Senior women: Niki Wories is in first place, Julia van Dijk and Jolanda Vos in 6th and 7th place respectively after the SP. Good luck in the FS! :hap10::hap10:
Junior women: Lucca Dijkhuizen is in 4th place, Kahlan Gooijer in 7th, Noa Fay Kappenberg in 21st, and Pheline Wisse in 24th after the SP. Also good luck in the FS! :hap10::hap10:
Sadly Meagen Kelders has withdrawn (I hope not because of injury).
In adv Novice boys Leo Lo is in 1st place after the short. I wish him luck in the FS! :hap10::hap10:
In adv novice girls (that part of the competition is finished): Summer Wijkhuizen ended in 8th, Elina Sucur, Elsbeth Mark, and Ksenia Usenko in 18th. 19th, and 20th respectively. Summer especially, but to all girls: well done! :cheer::laugh3::nana:

In basic novice girls 11 Dutch girls took part, of which Charlotte Brands and Star Hoen managed to end in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Two medals: 🥈🥉:points:A shout out to all of them: well done!:cheer::cheer:

Coupe du Printemps, final results.

Leon Lo did it again in the adv Novice boys. A gold medal for him. Hurrah! :points:🥇:cheer:
Niki Wories did not manage to hold on to first place, but still managed to get the bronze medal in the Sr women! Hurrah for her as well! 🥉 and a shout out to the other Sr women Julia and Jolanda who held on to their 6th and 7th placements. :cheer::cheer:
In jr women Lucca maintained her 4th place, while Kahlan was in 8th (7th in both the SP ad FS), Noa Fay was 18th and Pheline 23rd. Well done youngsters! :jumping::cheer::cheer:

Hurrah! Daria and Michel ended up in 15th place at Worlds, meaning they (in theory it could be another couple but we've only got one, and that's them!) qualified for the OG next season. :cheer::cheer:However, the Dutch Skating Federation has declared beforehand, that they had to end 14th or higher to get the spot automatically, and will demand some extra points elsewhere next season. That fall in the second throw was costly in that sense!:scratch2::slink:
It is not known what exactly will be required, but it feels wrong. Dutch speed skaters get sponsored or get an income from the Federation, Figure Skaters don't, and they still managed to qualify. Totally on their own merit. It seems unfair to put extra demands on them. But, for the ISU at least it is enough and they will not have to compete at the Olympic Qualifier in Beijing.

That's really not fair. What is the Fed going to do if they don't get those extra points, rather not send a team at all??

Probably. It would be the first pair ever for the Netherlands at an OG, but they are so focused on getting medals in the speed skating (short- and long track) that they also put demands on the Figure skaters. By the way, they wanted to do something like that for Lindsay too a few years back, but changed their minds.

So your Fed would rather not have any figure skaters at the Olympics at all than send a pair that finished 15th in the world in a competitive field and have been performing consistently all season? 😵‍💫 There isn't going to be anyone else to send! Niki couldn't manage the Worlds TES this season and the chances of her placing high enough in the qualifier are remote. Unless your ice dance teams have a sudden transformation, they are not at the standard needed to qualify - they probably need to find an extra 60-70 marks from somewhere. You don't even have a senior man.

When does Angel Delevaque become senior eligible? I'm not sure that she is old enough for next season.

Edit: I've just re-read this post. I am not intending to suggest that your skaters are bad. It is your Fed I am annoyed with, for not valuing the skaters you do have - and who have just earnt an Olympic spot for your country.

I hate it when federations/Olympic committees do stuff like this. Sweden have been notorious for it in a number of sports.

UK Sport sometimes interferes in certain sports as well and federations comply so they don't lose funding. Swimming now often has a limit on numbers of swimmers it sends to major championships; around 30 because they want to focus on those who can finish top 8. And British Athletics has followed suit in recent year sending smaller teams to championships; again focusing on top 8 finishes. Just qualifying for the Olympics isn't deemed good enough.

Figure Skating doesn't get much funding from UK Sport so thankfully they don't interfere there so anyone who qualifies gets to go to major championships. Maybe a lack of funding is a blessing in some ways :scratch2:

The thing is with more sports being added to both summer and winter games and sports having strict quotas it's becoming harder to qualify for the Olympics in any sport. So I'm sorry "just" qualifying for the Olympics should be good enough and should be celebrated no need to put extra hurdles in place. And for Worlds and Euros they are increasing tech minimums each year so it's harder to qualify there also.

I hope Daria and Michel go to Milano Cortina

@FlossieH, don't worry for only stating the truth, so far our only skaters with Olympic merit, are our pair and they qualified fair and square. I was annoyed with the Olympic Committee too! I hope they will be going too @CelticRose22!
Qualifying is certainly good enough, we've never had a pair competing at the OG. It would be a kind of break through really. Figure Skaters get hardly any funding (Speed skaters do) here either. A separate Foundation helps a little bit and Daria and Michel get some support from that, but then they are very enthusiastic about Daria and Michel in any case!

Ok, so if I've understood correctly, Daria and Michel will not get funding to go to the Olympics unless they get certain competition results this year? And without that funding they can't go (can't crowdfund)? or they simply won't get "permission"?
Also wondering how they are supposed to get these extra results if the qualifier is so early in the season. Because the Dutch Olympic Committee has to state before the qualifier whether or not they're going to use their spot, right?

It's crazy really. Figure Skating is among the longest-established, most prestigious Winter Olympic Sports, with a very high level of performance. It's not one of the recent additions with no depth of field, where you can scrape in by just turning up a lot.

To manage to qualify when there are so few spots is a monumental achievement, and should be celebrated and used to inspire the next generation. If you're good enough to represent your nation at Euros, Worlds and GPs, and good enough to qualify, you are good enough. End of.

If all nations took the Swedish view, we'd end up with a tiny field, smaller than a GP, instead of the great celebration of global sport we are all hotly anticipating.
