Elena Radionova

I only have one such feeling that Lena carries out all elements on some cosmic speed, at the same time doing it with improbable ease? Looking at speeches of other female skaters, such feeling for any reason doesn't arise. There can be because of this mad speed of her movements and therefore her skating seems to some people antsy and chaotic?

Looking at the comments on the Ladies SP thread, and the people complaining about Lena's PCS, I think most people actually don't realize how very fast Lena skates. Since the camera is always moving, it is very difficult to judge how fast a skater is moving, and how much ice they cover.

Before I watched a competition live, I didn't really understand why speed was so highly valued, but when you watch live, it is very different! It is impressive when people skate fast--it gives them an appearance of confidence and power--while slower skaters seem more tentative and less powerful.

I haven't had the opportunity to watch Lena skate live, but the comments I have read from people who have suggest that 1) Lena is one of the fastest skaters out there, with terrific ice coverage and 2) her ability to project to the audience is much more apparent when you are watching live versus on video. So I think her relatively-high PCS are completely justified.

As for why people think her movements are chaotic--I don't think it has much to do with the fact that she skates very fast, but it's more because of how she looks right now. She has very, very long, skinny arms and legs, she is very flexible, and she is energetic in her movements, so at times, I think it can look like her limbs are flailing like a puppet on a string (or a "wild Bambi (baby deer)" like Tara Lipinski said). Also, I think people look at her and assume that she still has to grow a lot (go through puberty), so they don't really take her seriously and are surprised/upset that the judges do. I think, for example, that if she had Anna Pogorilaya's body, and did the exact same movements, people would find it less "juniorish" and chaotic.

I'm not sure how much Lena will fill out (hopefully not enough to make the jumps hard!), but even if her limbs stay super skinny, she can certainly learn to make them look more controlled.

So yeah, there are things I would like Lena to work on, but most of all, I'd like her to keep her firecracker, "go big or go home" attitude and her absolute love of skating. :agree: As long as she has that, I, for one, can totally overlook the rest!

GOOD LUCK TO LENA IN THE FS TOMORROW!! :cheer:

Congrats Lena!! As Batsuchan said before, Liza and Lena are winning alternately :) they are actually my fave rival. And the amount of anti Lena gain xD

 Elena is so cute waiting for score! Who could hate this girl's smile? She smiles and I melt!! Congrats baby!

Complex feelings when you like and Lena and Lisa at the same time. They compete and somehow be divided up between gold and silver. In any case I will be happy and unhappy at the same time.

Someone has to get silver. :) Elena has nothing to feel bad about...she lost to a tremendous competitor, and just barely. This rivalry is far from over. :)

Congratulations to Radio's solid performance. :cheer: I like her lutz technique especially, how she launches it (not much pre-rotation). her landing is just that her air position is very very tight, she just need a tiny bit more time to get her legs around more.
as for watching Radio and Liza live, I have watched them live together twice.
2012 SA and 2013 SA. Radio's skating at 2012 SA is very "light" and fast in the warm up group that have Mao Asada and Ashley Wagner, she still can stands out. It is her 3LZ-3T at 2012 SA totally won my heart, she has perfect icing tracing back then (and great air position, entry edges etc.) but her blade work (step sequence, transitions) still needs polish.
Liza's jump is explosive and her performance has fire, also charming facial expression.
2013 SA, Radio is not as impressive as in 2012 SA... (in the field that has Gracie, SoYoun and Mirai, ...) I felt like her skating and Liza's are kinda small this time. perhaps I am biased:p this time. but truly, both Radio and Liza's performance did not wow me.
Both Radio and Liza are small girls in statute.
Liza in 2013 SA, one thing impressed me is that, she added more choreos/flare here and there (otherwise, I felt she is doing the same program 2 years in a a row, even including EX, probably due to her black/dark color costume:p).
So Radio vs Liza, the only thing I can say here is that I watch Radio's programs more than Liza's.

this is just giving my very honest (tried my best not to be biased) opinion here.

but Kudos to both girls' absolutely amazing performance today.

BTW, so far, which performance of Radio's LP is her best this season, everything considered?:)

Also, regarding this result, what direction will push Radio to develop in the future.
more tech difficulty means, back-load, more tanos, even learn 3A,
or better artistry, improve that quality of every thing she does?

EDIT: about screen vs live, Liza looked more impressive on SCREEN, Radio is about the same.

one thing very cute about Radio is that when she is more comfortable/familiar with her choreo, she sometimes add her own touches (touch lips, touch blades, subtle change in choreo) which goes along with her own feeling of the music at the moment. (Kurt said she creates her own tempo, something along the lines)

I agree with most of this. I love how quickly she skates, but I do think she can work on her posture and maybe take some more time with certain elements so it doesn't look rushed. If she does these things, I think her PCS will go through the roof (I hope so anyway).

Anyway, just watched her free skate again on British Eurosport- I love hearing their commentary b/c they love Elena as much as I do . It's amazing when you consider she just turned 16, and this is her first Euros! I laugh when people keep talking about how she'll lose her jumps etc. She's already grown a lot this year, and her jumps don't seem to be suffering. Even if they do, I am confident that she is smart, determined, and hard-working enough to go back and rework her technique.

Well done to Lena in the Europeans!
She got silver, but by 1 point. I think it proves that, until Liza puts her 3A in competition, when they both skate clean, they are pretty much neck and neck.

Congratulations, Lena! It's impossible not to admire Lena's consistency, performance ability, and the sheer joy of her skating.

Everything considered? GPF for me, because of the outfit. ;) It's also the performance I rewatched the most. Though if we just consider the skating, maybe TEB.

Also, regarding this result, what direction will push Radio to develop in the future.

I don't think she needs any drastic changes. Just some more quality on the jumps; I feel like Lena is so brilliant at landing her jumps that she sometimes doesn't make them look "pretty," which costs her some GOE. This doesn't mean she needs monster jumps like Liza (such a different technique could throw off her timing and consistency), but she could work on getting more flow on her landings. 'tano and back-loading would score more points, but I hope she doesn't take it too far and unbalance her programs (I think that would be a short-term gain for a long-term loss).

Another thing is holding her movements more. I feel like Lena is sometimes rushes through things in her exuberance. This was a bit jarring in the LP, where the music called for more controlled movement, imo.

Related to this, I feel like the LP this year wasn't the most suitable. Maybe her team tried a bit too hard with the "I'm mature" thing, yet added all the extraneous moves for COP. I think one day Lena will be able to skate Rach beautifully, but right now I believe her more even on her J.Lo SP. Maybe for next year: a dark/dramatic SP, which allows Lena to emote and shows versatility; a fun LP that's more in her wheelhouse.

I don't think Lena's axel is good enough to make 3A, but working on that jump and getting more height on the double could also be good for GOE. And Liza's consistency is likely to drop when she adds 3A (the energy it takes to do the jump, the mental toll, not to mention the hours spent practicing the axel in lieu of everything else).

But don't trust me too much, since I'm her rival's fan. :p But I do love them both, I swear.

Congratulations to la sciampagnosa. What a performance. There is nothing to be sorry for getting the silver with that performance and those sccores. Well done Lena. :cheer:

an extract:

I feel satisfied with having skated both programs clean. It was my goal to skate clean, I achieved it. I did everything I could. I won't pretend, I really wanted to win. But what can I do? It's very difficult to win such competition from the first try. But we will move forward.

A: How are the relationships between the girls in the Russian team?
A: I can say for myself. My mom always taught me to never be negative to anyone, only positive, because the more you give positive emotions, the better you feel.
What goes around, comes around, so one should never do anything bad, to lie, to steal, to say bad things. I wish everyone luck and happiness. Let it come back to me.

Q: Your programs are difficult, but Liza did 3 Axel here at the practice. Are you going to try something like that?
A: To be honest, I don't know yet what to do, which direction to go, because I have already mastered all the other triples. I need to work on basics, on spins... We will see.

Q: Do you want to try something?
A: It's a serious question, a serious jump, and it requires proper physical and psychological preparation.

Thanks Alba:thumbsup: Lena is so lovely:love:

Lena and Liza have been handing the Gold medals back and forth between the two of them all season long. And always alternating.

Lena won the GP event.
Liza won the GP final.
Lena won Russian Nationals.
Liza won Europeans.
Sooo... I have my bet placed for the world's gold

But seriously, I wanted her to win today. I just feel like this kind if consistency must be properly rewarded. Liza was amazing of course and had the skate of her career so far, so it's not a shame to come second to this performance by only ~1 point !
