Emauels skate (short) - Paul said it right

I have to agree with Paul Martini about Emanuel Sandhu - Paul says "You have to want it (winning) bad enough" and "Emanuel does not skate like he really wants it." "Not like a champion." Harsh words, I suppose, but honest. To me Emanuel does not look like he is focused. As Paul said it's a shame because Emanuel has all the talent to be a World champion, but has yet to prove it. I hope he skates better in the long and at least keeps Canada on the radar screen for next years worlds.

- Disappointed.

My, Ladskater, them's fightin' words...:) (or should I say, sadly, accurate words...)--here's some more, a quote from an article on Eurosport discussing the field at Worlds:

In the men's event, Canada will be looking to three-times national champion Emanuel Sandhu. Sandhu, a frustratingly inconsistent performer dripping with world-beating talent, upset world champion Yevgeny Plushenko to win the grand prix final.

Hit the nail on the head, there, doesn't he? I don't think anyone can know what's going on inside Eman's head, or how he deals with the pressure of being the best medal hope of a country so passionate about its skating, but one thing's for sure: whether he doesn't want it enough, as Paul said, or too much, which is also a possible explanation for his troubles, it sure is frustrating to see, no matter what country you're rooting for; as skating fans, I'm sure we'd all love to see anyone "dripping with world-beating talent" capitalize on it and deliver, both in the results column and also fulfill the potential to give performances to remember, the type we'll find on "Magic Memories on Ice XIII" or something:)

Hope something clicks for him soon, i.e., the next couple of seasons, perhaps leading to Turin...

Aaaww...but Emanuel did show fight at GPF and Canadians and I'm only talking this season. Why can you say he doesn't want to win? Of course I have no idea what is going on inside his head, but nobody (including Paul) does.

I felt so bad for him.

I don't know, that wacky poped 2toe with bent knee just had "I give up" written all over it. Surely his technique must be better than that. I think it was nerves, even if he says it wasn't. He just didn't have any kind of attack or conviction to that jump, which was a mess on many levels ( as opposed to a rotated quad that couldn't hold the landing). I tend to agree with Paul, he just doen't seem to have the "heart" of a champion.

Such a shame really. Let's hope he comes back fighting in the LP!

In defense of Emanuel, he could have quit a long time ago, but he chose to continue. He's a 3x nat'l champ and 4x runner-up. That's seven years as one of Canada's top skaters. That's no small feat.

I still like Emanuel's skating the best and I wish him only the best in the free skate tomorrow.

Go Eman!!!

Emanuel must have realized that he's got nothing to lose at this point. Here's hoping he comes back fighting and kicking butts in the LP! :)

He got the same problem or syndrome that Sasha Cohen has. Lots of talents but little nerves.

Hi, I'm new here! I agree, he had that "give up" attitude and then to spend more time talking about a wake up call. That was ridiculous! Stuff happens in life, he should have forgotten about that wake up call 10 minutes after he got up. He's such a great skater and it is too bad that his short went so wrong, but I do wish him the best of luck. Sometimes I wonder if he doesn't see in himself, what we all see.

Skate Canada made a big mistake sending Ben Ferreira over Jeff Buttle. Now, it all reality - Canada will have only 1 spot next year in mens. Shame.

I don't know if that's true. I think he's got the Josee Chouinard disease. She said once she had gone pro that she never believed she belonged in the world's top skaters, that she never had the confidence. I think that's Emmanuel. I definitely think he wants it, he just doesn't believe in himself. Either that or he wants it too badly and gets out there and 'overthinks' the performance. Either way, I think he wants to win but he's lacking that mental control. he needs to sit down and have a loooonnnnnggg talk with Elvis Stojko about how to do it when it counts. Now there's a guy who knew the secret!

I have to say, from a skater's perspective, one doesn't 'pop' jumps on purpose. I 'popped' the odd jump in competition and it's like a knee-jerk reaction. You're going into the jump fine and next thing you know....uh oh!

No offense to anyone here but I hate Paul Martini as a commentator-too much talking and opinion!!!

Yep I would have still sent Buttle only because it seems that he has the presentation that the judges truly love regardless of the quad. He was also sick around Canadian Nationals. I just think the man is belongs on World ice. Can't wait to see him next season.

Now Eman...I have to stop expecting these medals for him and just enjoy his skating. If he gets it then great but I'm just going to enjoy his in betweens because they are beautiful. No more medal expectations from me. I think he's frustrated enough with himself.

Well I am sure he is use to coming back and "fighting back" in the LP tonight, he's been in this position many times before in the past.

"What Eman Are We Going To See Tonight .." was a great quote at the beginning of the broadcast on Tues. night.

I just have to add here that Emanuel is no Elvis when it comes to being disciplined for the competitve life. Elvis would never use an excuse to explain why he had a bad skate. I am sure Emanuel wants to win, but he needs to learn how to draw from within and be more focused when he is competing. The CBC has been doing a little back ground piece on his personal life. I know his homelife was not the greatest, but I think it effects his performances. Competing in figure skating is not for everyone. I think Emanuel is loaded with talent, it's a shame he can't make that "break through" and connect with himself and his skating. Who knows? Maybe next season will be better!

I second that motion that Jeff Buttle should have been sent!!!! I hope to see him there next year. Also we could use Shawn Sawyer - please get those jumps under your belt Shawn!!!!
