Emilea and Vadym finished 5th out of 20 in the FD, with a score of 123.19. This meant that they climbed to 5th position overall, with a score of 206.72.
Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:
Oh, that was quick!
Simon as Emilea and Vadym were coming out: "This is the revelation of the Games in Ice Dance".
High praise indeed!
They were right in the thick of their programme when the cameras started to focus on them. And then when they finished that bit, they started waving.
As somebody who has been following them since they got together (and in Emilea's case, for even longer), it always annoys me when people say that they have appeared out of no-where. I know they are meaning it as a compliment, but it does belittle the hard work they have been doing in previous seasons...
Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:
And to close out the penultimate group, it's my second set of kids!!!
ALL THE BEST EMILEA AND VADYM!!!

Here is what I wrote about the programme:
This is more my style than their other programme.
I was just mesmerised the whole way through.
That was beauty on ice.
Simon: "They are breath-takingly good!"
I agree.
Emilea did the hand heart and blew a kiss to the camera when coming off the ice. And I did the same back.
Simon and Louise both say that Emilea is something else.
This is so satisfying to hear, after having to listen to people say over the past few years that she wasn't good enough for Vadym.
They look nervous waitying for their scores.
They go into the lead of both the FD and overall.
They look happier now...
When Milla Ruud REITAN / Nikolaj MAJOROV (SWE) skated in Group 1, Hungarian member
@sissy7 started a "Romeo & Juliette" count, and commented:
1/3 FDs of the Romeo&Juliet tonight, very good skate!
Think if we start a pettitions all 3 can be part of the Closing ceremony in Verona?

That would be Milla Ruud REITAN / Nikolaj MAJOROV (SWE), Phebe BEKKER / James HERNANDEZ (GBR), and Emilea and Vadym. And I would thoroughly back that proposal! Or, at least, have all of them in the Gala!
There was quite a lot of talk about them during the Warm-Up. The first to mention them was German member
@Sabsi, who proclaimed:
I love everyone in this group, especially Zingnik

To which our resident video archive list compiler
@labgoat replied:

Is that your nickname for them?
To which
@Sabsi answered:

No, the copyrights belong to someone else in this forum.
It's maybe better that they didn't say who it was, because I really do not like that name!
In reply to a comment from another member,
@moonvine said:
Z/K are in an upward trajectory seldom seen in Ice Dance.

Was it because they won 4CC? Because I thought the rivalry would be CPom vs LaLa, now they both seem to be not moving up as much
I would really like to see Green/Parsons rewarded for their creativity too.

Making the GPF was really the start of the rise.
And, although not a formal reply to any of the posts,
@Chantilly added what former British skater turned top Ice Dance coach in Canada Carol Lane had said about them while commentating on CBC:
Regarding Z/K, Carol keeps mentioning how much they've been out competing, allowing people to get to know them and their skating as being one reason for their rise.
And in reply to
@Dreamer57's post, moonvine explained:

I think it started when they beat Jeffrey Chen and his partner at US Nationals, which was not supposed to happen. Raised quite a few eyebrows. Winning 4CCs was for sure big.!
Using moonvine's initial comment,
@Cindy1983 asked:
Z/K are in an upward trajectory seldom seen in Ice Dance.
How old are Z/K?
To which I answered:
Emilea is 23 (turns 24 in April). Vadym turned 24 in October.

When it was finally their turn to skate,
@Sabsi was again the first to comment, proclaiming when they were about to start:
My favourite R/J program this season

Next
@sissy7 completed their count of the "Romeo & Juliette" programmes:
Lets goooo
3/3 R &J, and the best one
@shan22044 got excited about one of the pieces being used:
This totally went over my head, but I just looked it up and apparently "Dance Of The Knights" was used in an advert for a perfume of that name.
During the programme.
@LeReveur was puzzled with the level given for an element:
One foot turns: Kolesnik got level 2. No explanation from the NBC team....
To which
@16Olympics replied:

That's going to hurt....
@16Olympics also commented:
Vadym looked scared to death at the start...Great going so far...
After they finished,
@Sabsi commented:
@figureskatingandrainbows was doing Play By Plays:
14. Emilea ZINGAS & Vadym KOLESNIK USA

@shan22044 posted something else that went over my head:
My Norwegian frield
@norwegianfairytale enjoyed them:
They always seem so secure and solid, really enjoyed that. Well done

Netherlands based American member
@tulosai was really impressed:
These two are exquisite, no notes. I think it actually takes a special pair to be able to skate to this kind of music well, to be unique you have to really own it and they do.
As was
@GGFan:
I'm so happy for Z/K. I love that program. They made R&J seem fresh. Their leg extension and commitment are excellent.
I think Polish member
@Karoltyna was referring to the subject matter of the programme when she said:
GS member from the start
@yelyoh was first to declare their position... before it was even announced:
@auser loved what they did:
ZINGAS Emilea / KOLESNIK Vadym bringing the drama. Love their attack and dynamic energy.

Not-the-band
@cocteautwin was impressed:
Emilea and Vadym make an impression of the best cardio trained team who did the most runthroughs, they are so incredibly sharp. I love the final pose.
As was
@museksk8r:
Wow, Z/K are so crisp, so sharp, so one as a team. Oh, that was breathtaking! I loved their speed, attack and extension. The improvement in Emilea this season is truly astounding. They are so prepared! I feel they should have been 4th in the RD here. Love them!!

@LeReveur returned to make a very bold statement:
One thing that sets Zingas/Kolesnik apart from most couples is that they are BOTH great performers with confidence. I disagree with Tracy Wilson's comparison to Davis/White aside from the speed. I think Zingas/Kolesnik are more in line with the music and better dancers than Davis/White ever were. Yes, a bold statement for some.
And
@GGFan returned to make another:
If several teams decide to retire after the Olympics Z/K could be pushing for the podium at Worlds . . . just saying.
@museksk8r returned to post the scores:
Z/K into 1st with 123.19/206.72.
British based member
@LadyB was again eyeing up their coach:
Still can't get over Igor never looking a day older than a decade ago.
And British member
@Ruthypegs was impressed with the skills of both of them:
Vadym is incredible skater - but Emilea isn't far behind - they are fabulous
@lileychristie in Australia was impressed, but concerned with the colour of the boxes on the TES graphic:
ZingNik is so solid!
There were surprisingly a lot of yellow boxes though
Oh noooo my CBC stream is erroring just before their scores

@moonvine then confirmed the position:
@chepe liked them, but not the music:
Sorry, although I like this pairing, after previous ones this program felt outdated, and music connected poorly. Maybe I'm R/J'd out, shrug.
@Chantilly did a very detailed post which hit all the keypoints:
I know their rise isn't common in ice dance but I think they totally deserve it.
The transitions in and out of their elements are difficult and well executed.
Their unison and commitment are excellent.
Their energy and attack is incredible.
Very well choreographed program.
I don't love the double stabbing at the end as it's not accurate but.
I think she just needs more confidence
@Dreamer57 asked a question:
Can someone tell me who is the woman with zingnik and igor schpilband please?
But didn't get an answer.
And
@16Olympics thought they were Berlin:
That was breathtaking.....well done. I just love them. Into the lead...
If you know, you know!
@Demandred was looking ahead to the final group:
Z/K may even challenge Charlene and Marco with this score, one twizzles bobble from Marco (my biggest worry about them) and it could well happen. I hope not, but we'll see.
I am so nervous for Charlene and Marco now, only a few minutes until the moment of truth...
Polish member
@Ares was impressed with a particular element:
Rotational elements of Zingas/Kolesnik left a big impression on me. So fast

@Blades of Passion likes to make bold statements, and this was no exception:
Zingas/Kolesnik should have been 4th in Short Dance for me and may deserve to place that high overall too. They will be World Champions next year though, it will be made up for.
Looking at the Protocols, as ever, there were no issues at all.
The GOE ranged from +1.92 for the sixth element, the Curved Lift, to +3.79 for the final element, the Choreographic Character Step Sequence. But because the latter had the joint lowest Base Value of the programme, it only rose to become the third lowest scoring element of the programme.
Apart from three +2's (two of which were for the penultimate element, the Diagonal Step Sequence, and two of which were from Judge 3),all the Judges marks were in the +3 to +5 range.
Emilea and Vadym finished the Free Dance 2.11 points behind 4th position, Charlène GUIGNARD / Marco FABBRI (ITA), and 0.23 points ahead of 6th position, Olivia SMART / Tim DIECK (ESP). Emilea and Vadym were at the head of a group of 9 partnerships covered by 7.23 points, stretching down to Juulia TURKKILA / Matthias VERSLUIS (FIN) in 13th position.
Overall, Emilea and Vadym finished 2.86 points behind 4th position, Guignard / Fabbri, and 2.06 points ahead of 6th position, Allison REED / Saulius AMBRULEVICIUS (LTU).
Top 5 in their first Olympics. What an achievement!
And with their second highest ever scores in the SD, FD, and overall. Only surpassed by what they got at Nationals barely a month ago.
I'm so proud of them!
Now roll on Senior Worlds!
WELL DONE!!!
