Emilea and Vadym finished 4th out of 15 in the FD, with a score of 122.04. This meant that they dropped to 4th position overall, with a score of 204.17.

Unfortunately, due to living outside America, I was not able to watch any of the action from Wichita. So, I was concentrting on the Ephesus Cup instead.

However, some kind soul has uploaded a video to YouTube. So, here are my thoughts.

For goodness sake! Somebody tell the commentators to shut up during the programme!

Sorry, but the commentary spoiled my enjoyment of Emilea and Vadym's Free Dance.

Usually, I get totally immersed in the moment when watching this programme. To the extent that I can't write out my thoughts. But this time, I couldn't get into it at all, because the commentators were talking so much. Which is a shame, because Emilea and Vadym were really good. I didn't spot any issues at all!

I loved the long hug at the end. They knew they had given it their all!

Unfortunately, the end of the hug was where the video cut off.

They went into 2nd position.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

Here are the comments that were posted about Emilea and Vadym in the competition thread:

Z/K showing some shaky nerves.

That won’t be enough for the bronze I fear, unless C/P have a faulty dance.

The first and second half of this program don't really go together imo. Both parts work, but they feel kind of disconnected.

Love the passion that they put into that program. They sell every single thing! There are some transitions in there that are a little rough but I really enjoyed it overall.

Watching with the sound off. Vadym continues to be the hardest working man in all of US ice dance.
Absolutely beautiful leg extension too—takes my breath away

Those twizzles were great though

The last twizzle she did was very shaky actually.

That is a beautiful program for Emilea & Vadym. It really is hard to choose between two such subtle, reflective pieces. Can I tie them?

Looking at the Protocols, everything is so impressive. The lowest GOE was +1.30 (for the Stationary Lift), and the highest was +3.20 (for the Choreographic Character Step Sequence). For the Judges marks, the lowest was +2 (ten of them) while the highest was the very rare +5 (four of them, three of which came from Judge 8). But the vast majority were +3 (a grand total of 56 of them!)

Emilea and Vadym finished the Free Dance 1.20 points behind 3rd position, Caroline GREEN (Pavilion SC of Cleveland Heights) / Michael PARSONS (Washington FSC), and 4.01 points ahead of 5th position, Emily BRATTI (Washington FSC) / Ian SOMERVILLE (Washington FSC).

Overall, Emilea and Vadym finished 1.20 points behind 3rd position, Green / Parsons, and 10.80 points ahead of 4th position, Oona BROWN (SC of New York) / Gage BROWN (SC of New York).

A while after they skated, @moonvine commented:

That might get Z/K to 4CCs.

Well, it did! When the assignments for Worlds and 4 Continents were announced, there were the usual complaints from those that believe that the Top 3 at Nationals should always get the slots at both Majors, no exceptions. But, when you have a situation where the skaters / partnerships who were 3rd and 4th in Nationals were so closely matched not just at Nationals but throughout the season, I think it is only fair to split the assignments to allow both of them to get points for next season. And I would say that whichever position Emilea and Vadym had finished in.

Anyway, they did great here, and I hope they do great at 4 Continents too!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

It looks like there was illness. They did not participate in the gala due to illness.

Yes, Vadym said after the FD that he felt like he couldn’t continue by the middle section of the program but that he was somehow able to finish. He was really exhausted by the end. But that embrace at the end was everything.

On to 4CC, hopefully with both Emi and Vadym healthy!

Emilea and Vadym are back in action tomorrow at the Four Continents Championships in Seoul, South Korea.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 10th partnership to start. So, first partnership in Group 3.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 16:16:30 KST (02:16:30 EDT / 07:16:30 GMT / 09:16:30 EET). So 10h 26m from now.

Emilea and Vadym finished 5th out of 14 in the Short Dance, with a score of 74.63.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

"Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be... Emilea and Vadym!"

First out from behind the curtain are my kids, waving to the audience all the way.

When the Warm-Up starts, Emilea is out on her own.

Ah, the camera has found Vadym now. He takes off his jacket and hands it to their coach.

Back to Emilea, and Vadym joins her. They go around the ice holding hands until their introduction is finished, and then start practicing.

Later on, we see them just casually wandering around when Marjorie LAJOIE / Zachary LAGHA (CAN) are being focussed on.

After everybody has been introduced, we switch to a camera beside their coach, Igor Shpilband, to see... Vadym cleaning his nose. :rolleye: Great timing, Director!

We briefly see them again wandering jsut before the time is up.

But now it is time for them to do their programme.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

I never did like the Intro to "Jive Talking", but I do like their choreography to it.

I was starting to wonder if the TES box was ever going to appear!

Hate this remix of "Staying Alive". The original is great, so I wish they would use it!

Still think Emilea spins a lot faster than Vadym.

Such a shame that that bit of choreography near the end is being done right by the Judges, because it would look great in the middle of the ice.

But, on the whole, I love this programme.

Sorry that I am not writing much about what they were doing, but I'm still on the laptop and it is hard to type and watch at the same time with where it is positioned. It was much easier to do both with where the desktop is.

They look worried waiting for the scores.

But no need to. They go into the lead.

I agree with Chris. The do look like they were looking more.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

There were not actually many people commenting at this stage of the competition.

I thought this comment from @Seven Sisters was funny:

Vadym flicked his hair so hard, he froze my stream!

I am not going to quote the next comment, because the writer was using their post about Emilea and Vadym as a means of making a thinly veiled dig at me. I know the member in question doesn't like me. And although I would prefer if we could all get along, I accept that is not always possible. But I do not agree with her bringing skaters that I like into it. That is not right. They do not deserve to become part of our dispute.

While waiting for their scores, @4everchan commented on something commentator Chris Howarth had said:

Chris : they didn't miss a beat...

Me : they certainly do : base level on pattern.... and her second set of twizzles was the leaning tower of pisa

He then replied to his own comment with this after the scores were announced:

levels went up....

Looking at the Protocols, there was only one negative number on the whole table. And that was a -1 from Judge 4 for the Twizzles. However, Judge 4 consistently marked all the elements lower than the other Judges, so it is nothing to be concerned about.

If you ignore Judge 4's marks, nearly all the Judges marks were +2 or +3. The exceptions were a +1 from Judge 5 for the Midline Step Sequence; +4 from Judges 7 and 8 for the Rotational Lift; and +4 from Judge 7 for the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence.

In terms of GOE, the lowest was +1.37 for the Rotational Lift; and the highest was +4.07 for the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. The other elements got GOE ranging from +2.06 to +2.56.

Emilea and Vadym are currently 4.67 points behind 4th position, Christina CARREIRA / Anthony PONOMARENKO (USA), and 2.26 points ahead of 6th position, Hannah LIM / Ye QUAN (USA).

Being realistic, with the size of the gap, even with a good Free Dance from Emilea and Vadym, it would probably take mistakes from Carreira / Ponomarenko to be able to overtake them. But, it is possible. Ice is slippery, after all. But, the more pressing reason that they need to have a good Free Dance is that Lim / Quan are within striking distance.

So, let's hope they do have a good Free Dance!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 18:25:00 KST (04:25:00 EDT / 09:25:00 GMT / 11:25:00 EET). So 4 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 10th partnership to start. So, first partnership in Group 3.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 20:03:30 KST (06:03:30 EDT / 11:03:30 GMT / 13:03:30 EET). So 5h 38m from now.

Emilea and Vadym are due to start at 20:03:30 KST (06:10:00 EDT / 11:10:00 GMT / 13:10:00 EET). So 5h 45m from now.

Emilea and Vadym finished 5th out of 14 in the FD, with a score of 113.92. This meant that they remained 5th position overall, with a score of 188.55.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Well, they were the first to come through the curtains for the Group 3 Warm-Up on Thursday, and are doing it at exactly the same stage of the competition again today.

Big waves from both of them to the audience.

This is funny. At the start of the Warm-Up, Emilea was charging away on her own, and Vadym was running after her trying to catch up!

He soon caught up, and they started doing a section of their programme immediately.

When the camera was focussing on Marjorie LAJOIE / Zachary LAGHA (CAN), we saw Emilea and Vadym at the boards talking to their coach. And a few moments later when the camera was focussing on Madison CHOCK / Evan BATES (USA), we saw Emilea and Vadym setting off again.

The camera focussed on them again just as the skaters were being given the 1 minute warning, and they were just strolling along holding hands. Probably wise not to be doing anything too taxing, given that they are first to skate.

And here they come!

:cheer: ALL THE BEST EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

The start of this programme always gets me. It is so beautiful.

Mmmm. The director is making a lot of use of aerial shots. Not sure that is a good idea. They are too far away.

I know I am biased when it comes to these two, and I know I am clueless when it comes to the technicalities, but that looked absolutely flawless to me.

They have definitely thrown down the gauntlet to the next partnership, Christina CARREIRA / Anthony PONOMARENKO (USA).

Awww, Emilea doing the heart hand thing. Here's one back: ❤️

They go into the lead of both the FD and overall.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Before I go through the other comments, @ManyCairns replied to my post abut the programme with this post after the segment was over:

That program mesmerizes me every time, and I thought this was a great performance of it, very moving. To me, their emotion is palpable, and the program always feels much shorter than it is, I'm so involved in it.

During the Warm-Up, my good friend from Sicily, @elektra blue, commented:

Vadym needs an haircut, and i'm saying this as someone that loves a men with long hair

And she wasn't the only one that thought that. @Dawn825 commented:

I'm taking off a point for Vadym's hair, sorry

As they were being introduced, our resident video archive list compiler, @labgoat, posted:

Go Emilea & Vadym!

And then after they finshed, added:

That was very well skated for them. If you can believe it they skate this even faster in practice.

My good friend in New South Wales, @anonymoose_au, commented:

Well that was weird, but well-skated!

Was that Benoit back there? If so the choreo suddenly makes sense :laugh2:

@Dawn825 came back to comment:

A little boring till the last part of the music imo

@IceDancingQueen had similar feelings:

Well skated by Z/K but they make me feel nothing. And their choreo feels recycled from other teams’ choreo. Soz!

To which @labgoat replied:

They did borrow at least two moves from Chock & Bates. The flip-out exit from the lift and the thread the needle twist in the choreo part.

And then @IceDancingQueen came back with this:

This is very typical with Igor teams. I remember when he still coached Madi and Evan and their 2018 FD was basically recycled choreo from P/C’s FDs.

At the end of the segment, my colleague in this thread, @Rackon, added this:

Yay Piper and Paul!

Just want to backtrack to say I love ZK’s program - sophisticated, elegant, spare but passionate, it does not play to the cheap seats. One of the best things Benoit has choreographed. They skated it beautifully.

Vadym, needs a haircut. But he’s a fabulous ice dancer. (Emi is getting there.)

Looking at the Protocols, there was actually one issue. The Choreographic Character Step Sequence did not fulfill all requirements, but the Protocols do not say in what way. That said, there were no negative numbers next to it. It got the second lowest GOE, at +1.19; and the worst set of Judges marks, with 0 from Judge 6; +1 from four Judges; +2 from three Judges; and +3 from Judge 1.

But everything else was beautiful. Apart from a +1 from Judge 1 for the Choreographic Lift, the remaining Judges marks were either +2, +3 or +4. And the GOE's ranged from +1.17 for the Stationary Lift to +3.14 for the Diagonal Step Sequence.

Emilea and Vadym finished the Free Dance 3.86 points behind 4th position, Christina CARREIRA / Anthony PONOMARENKO (USA), and 2.27 points ahead of 6th position, Hannah LIM / Ye QUAN (KOR).

Overall, Emilea and Vadym finished 8.53 points behind 4th position, Carreira / Ponomarenko, and 4.53 points ahead of 6th position, Lim / Quan.

To be fair, whatever the mistake on the Choreographic Character Step Sequence was, it was not what cost them 4th position. Because Carreira / Ponomarenko had the same issue. In fact, their's was worse than Emilea and Vadym's. It was just a general case of scoring a couple of points less than them on TES and a couple of points less than them on PCS.

In both segments and overall, Emilea and Vadym got their second lowest scores of the season, But, when the programmes looked so good, and the Protocols looked so good, this just shows how good a season they have had.

I don't know if they will be competing in many more events this season. But, if they continue on like this, I am really looking forward to seeing what they can do next season.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

It looks like they're filming with NBC Olympics in Milan! How exciting for them. Makes me feel a little better about the controversial Leave Your Mark snub.
Yes! The footage should be fantastic! Here are some Photos Milano/NBC of them from their IG, featuring spectacular scenery - and very romantic! (Emi said she couldn’t resist singing “the hills are alive with the sound of music..”😅)

They have one more week at Benoit’s camp. Here’s a video of the NBC shoot in the mountains, plus a tiny snippet from today’s practice - Vadym obviously needs some rest!🥱

Emi and Vadym have their first Challenger assignment of the season - Kinoshita Cup in Osaka, Japan, September 5-7. This should be an excellent opportunity for them to earn WS points.

Next week they will be at Champs Camp in Boston.

Hoping for program announcements soon!

For those of us that loved that album of photos of Courmayeur that Emilea uploaded to Instagram, here are two more albums:

https://www.instagram.com/p/DK7y-hbye6v/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DLQf1BXyvJU/

And on a similar note, I was updating the OP of this thread there now, and found out the feature that we saw being filmed in the first photo of the first Instagram album (i.e. the one @Rackon linked to) has now been posted on the Olympic Figure Skating YouTube channel. Here is the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbzXI9FtmoY

Not wanting to put a negative spin on things, but it always worries me when features like this are filmed and released before the teams for whatever event is being talked about are selected. It seems like tempting fate. And we saw what happened last season, when they missed out on the podium position at Nationals that would have sent them to Worlds by barely more than a point.

I wonder when they are going to reveal their music for the coming season. I can't wait to find out what it is! (I hope it's something I like! ;) :p )

Congratulations to Vadym, as of this morning, a proud new citizen of the United States of America!!👏🇺🇸❤️😭

I’m so thrilled for him and Emi! This must be a huge relief. And America is so lucky to have him!

Link to Vadym’s original post.

In other news…program/music details will drop this week.

Emi and Vadym did a terrific AMA live chat via Instagram this past Saturday morning. It’s gone into the ether now, but I’ll put highlights for those who missed it in separate post.

Wow! 😲 I thought he got it years ago when he was with Avonley, or shortly afterwards.

I really hope that this had been the planned date for his ceremony all along, and that his special occasion did not get hastily re-scheduled by officials, given what else is happening today involving his two countries. Vadym deserves better than that.

America is very lucky to have both Vadym and Emilea. I just hope the powers that be realise it, and give them the opportunities that their talent deserves. It would be a travesty if they didn't.

Looking forward to finding out the music, and to seeing them in action.

Emilea and Vadym debut their rhythm dance at Kinoshita Cup Challenger in just over an hour. Their program is to Poison, by Bell Biv DeVoe. Their free dance is to Romeo & Juliet- Dance of the Knights, Death of Juliet, by Prokofiev.

Good luck to them - I know we are excited to see this season’s programs!

Thank you so much, @Rackon. With so much happening this weekend, I had completely forgot about the Kinoshita Group Cup being on. :palmf: :slink:

I have just posted a back-dated reminder post.

It is so good to go through the Predictions Thread and see the vast majority of players putting them in the 🥇 Gold Medal position.

Oh, I hope those predictions come true!

Thank you again.
