Entries/Quotas for 2026 Olympics

I have to correct myself as well: I checked it and applications for people under 21 and for Nordic citizens are two distinct lines. Anyway, Nordic citizens usually have the quickest outcome of all applicants (whether it will be quick enough, it remains to be seen). Honestly, Milla's case is very straightforward: she surely owns a biometric passport, so identification is not a problem, she is applying for herself alone (no other family members). The only disadvantage is the time she spent outside Sweden, but I hope that it didn't exceed six weeks per year; furthermore, all her travels to competitions were done representing Sweden.

IF a case officer picks her file, it really could be decided very quickly. If so, she’ll have to turn in her Norwegian passport for some checks and to book a personal appearance at the Migration Agency (that, luckily, is located in Norrköping). I hope this won't interfere with Euros mid-January, since the UK is not in the Schengen area anymore and Milla would need an (old or new) passport to travel there. Her old passport will be scanned/checked at the Migration Agency and then sent back by mail. Now, the irony of a team skating to Romeo and Juliet being at the mercy of the postal service is not lost on me, but I'm too nervous to joke about it.

The Swedish Olympic Team will be announced on January 22nd, however there's still hope until the 26th.
Thanks for great insights about how this works.

I just saw this as well, Nordic citizen is 2 months and applications between 18-21 is 6 months, so two of the quickest outcome from all applications, so being Nordic citizen already has the shortest time, so in general her age won´t matter. But I thought that maybe the two things combined might help - that Nordic citizens between 18-21 might get some advantage before the other Nordic applications that is over the age of 21 and that in general makes it shorter then the average of 2 months for Nordic applications. Let´s just hope in general that in this particular period very few other Nordic citizens are not very interested to get Swedish Citizenship 🤣 Would be interesting to see some kind of statistic if the amount of applications are on average now, or more or less then usual.

OOoh the issue about maybe not having her passport during Euros was not something I thought about could be an issue. And it´s really unlucky that Euros is held in the one of the few countries in Europe that is not part of Schengen :/ I mean that could very well happen given how tight the timeline is. So if they suddenly WD right before we might know the reason, and in general it´s a good one it means she gets her passport in time and will be at Olympics instead, but also it would be sad to miss Euros. Also SOC could still deny them the spot (I don´t think they will, but what a tragedy if they WD from Euros do to not having her passport, they get the citizenship but then SOC decided not to send them, so they miss both).

So if she has to hand in her passport during Euros, she still won´t know if she has gotten the citizenship or not? Like she might give away her passport for a while and still not get her citizenship? Or is handing in your passport basically just the last formality before you get your citizenship?

About spending enough time in Sweden, I think they have it under control, the Swedish Feds spokesperson says Milla has done everything right so they surely wouldn´t have missed out that part.

Yes, handing in your passport usually means that things are approaching a conclusion, so it would be good news. I don't think that Milla will be denied citizenship, it's only a matter of making the deadline, with the additional problems of having to travel for Euros.
When she's asked to hand in her passport, checking it shouldn't take long, but waiting for it to come back could take a few days, no big deal, unless it happens right when they have to compete in Sheffield. One can always ask for their passport back, but it would be sent within 15 days (Milla definitely can't afford the luxury of waiting that long) and possibly delay the process.
She will receive a letter that authorizes her to book an appointment for personal identification and, again, I hope it will be before Euros.
As you said, having presented a well-documented application should make things go smoothly, once the processing starts.
As for the SOC, I hope that they have made an assessment on their situation, even if they won't say anything officially.

I'm crossing every available limb and hoping for the best.

Thanks. Having my fingers crossed.

I actually don´t think it´s possible she will get her new passport/old passport back before Euros if the application is under process, unless she already got the letter that she should book an appointment and already put in her passport for a check like yesterday or something or has an appointment early first thing next week.

IF she would hear back and was asked to book an appointment in the upcoming week, that would probably be too tight to do it before Euros. They probably already got a flight booked for Tuesday or Wednesday 13 or 14. of January, and probably (preferably) preparing in Oberstdorf with their coach the days before.. so that would be a challenge when the passport needs to be picked up in Sweden. RD doesn´t start until Friday the 16th at noon, but usually the official practice starts already 2 days before and they always arrived for the first practices. The first skaters for Euros probably (pairs, women) already arrive at Sunday or Monday, so that is basically just a week away.

Is emergency passport at the airport a possibility? I mean if the issue is its under way in the mail, wouldn´t it be the same as someone forgetting theirs...

They could possible book an appointment the second they are home from Euros, first possible office hours is probably Monday the 19th. That would be enough time before Milano, but the question is if it´s good enough for SOC that would need to know if her citizenship is sorted out before the 26th of January. That would leave a week for her to have her new passport back. If they know her passport is in the making, is it good enough? Or maybe they actually need the passport physically for some registration form?

Either way - I just realized how incredible stressful this timeline is 🫣

The problem is that she has to wait to be called, and no one knows when.
As of now, we only know that her application was submitted on December 1st. Milla will receive any communication by mail and on her Migrationsverket personal page. Unfortunately, there is the possibility that nobody starts working on her case until it's too late for the Olys, as much as it pains me to write it. I don't think she can even ask for info yet, except by phone (and she's not likely to get much feedback).

I, too, hope that things will shake up next week. On the plus side, I think that she handed in a thoroughly detailed application, according to the latest requirements added last March (other people had to write additional information at a later stage, slowing down the process). If she gets called for her personal appearance, it's not impossible that her Norwegian passport will be given back to her on the spot, after having checked it (I hope so, it would make things a lot easier). After all, it's a valid biometric passport from Norway, it shouldn't pose any problems (I’ve read about people whose documents were held for quite a long while, but also people who got them back immediately). She'll also have to hand in her Swedish ID-kort that she got when she registered with Skatteverket.

Of course, if Euros were in a Schengen country, she could travel with a Norwegian ID (if she still has a valid one), but that's a moot point.
As for the Swedish passport, once she's become a citizen she can ask for one to the Police; the good thing is that her online status will be updated even before she gets her certificate by mail. IF she makes it in time, I hope that the online status/certificate will be enough for the SOC, and then she could always ask for an emergency temporary passport (she doesn't need a passport to travel to Italy, but I think the CIO requires athletes to be registered with a passport - I'm not sure about that).
We'll possibly know more at Euros, and if it's still radio silence from Migrationsverket by then, well, that wouldn't be good news.

I'm very sorry if you are getting stressed about this, let's wish all the best to Milla and Nikolaj, and remember, as Milla said, they are aiming for a long career.

I will survive the stress, I think it´s worse for those in the middle of this, not knowing, not daring to hope. They seem to try not think much about it though, but still prepare as if they are going to Olympics.

I know there is a high chance they might not look at her application just before it´s too late, still I like to stay positive. I think the worst part of this is that she might have her citizenship when Olympics starts, but it might just be too late for the deadline. So I would rather that they pick up her application after Olympics instead of just around the February 1. But that is going to be a lot more frustrating for Milla and Nikolaj. But as you say, they are young and aiming for 2030, so it´s not the end of the world either. We just have to remember that it was highly unlikely when they teamed up that they would end up with a spot for Sweden after skating together only for 3 seasons. That has me thinking about another thing - it´s a pity that Emma and Erik split, I know that SOC probably would not have given them a ticket anyways, but if would have been nice for them to have the chance, since is such a huge deal with a ice dance spot for Sweden.

You might have a point that she might not need to hand in her passport right away and could get it back right away, just check it in for a scan. Maybe she can postpone the getting a new passport part to after Euros, but move things ahead with her personal meet up. When I got a new passport in Norway, I got mine back while waiting for a new one. But they cut the passport before giving it back, so i´m not sure if I could have used it. I don´t think I ever checked or asked as I had time to wait for the new one.

The instagram for the Swedish Olympic team (can't add a link right now since I'm on a work computer) has posted nine new additions to the team, and Milla and Nikolaj are in that post! So I guess it has worked out for Milla!
Good news, I am glad for them. Will update the list when I get home.

Now the Hungarians are the first alternate, which is deja vu for them, if I am not mistaken

I´m actually quite surprised about the announcement today - because I was looking for clues earlier this week and looked at them online for news articles and 2 days ago there was one about Nikolaj where he talked about that he has hidden his Russian roots because of the war, that it has been difficult and that when asked about his name he has said it´s from Denmark.

The article is here.

In the end of the article, it says Milla still waits for her citizenship. So it means she must have gotten the news like this week, unless they knew it was in process and they just waited for the passport or something, and didn´t want to give away the news before they got the confirmation from SOC.

The interview might have been done some time before it was published though. This had me thinking about the passport situation @bartlebooth - it´s probably under the making now so she might not have it for Euros next week. But I think if it´s the case she can still go with emergency passport. I read about it online and it seems when you need to travel shortly while waiting for the new passport, you can get the needed paperwork beforehand and pick up a emergency passport at the police station or by the airport, so I think it will okay. And if it´s under the making now, she can still get it in time but she will need to stay in Sweden.

Milla probably got her online status upgrade these days.
Usually a regular passport takes about 5 working days. I'd say that it will comfortably be ready for the end of January and the IOC paperwork. For Euros next week, Milla can travel with her Norwegian passport if she hasn't got the new one yet, I guess. Both Sweden and Norway allow dual citizenship now, so she'll get it back. Another option would be the emergency passport, but maybe it won't even be a necessity.
All in all, such a huge relief! I apologize for having been such a Cassandra, but the Euros being in the UK really spiced things up, and I've been thinking of the worst case scenario, and checking the news every day.

Updated the list with the latest news about Mila, and went through all the entries as well.
We had a net positive trend overall. The expected negative outcome came true in Yuko's case:cry:, and looks to be the same in Alisa's case (I know that there is a sliver of chance, at least reported, but we will know for sure on Sunday). The only unexpected negative turn was Maria Seniuk, and Israel's new passport laws:frown:
With the registration deadline being next Monday (12 Jan), we will hopefully get a full official list, and I hope that there will be no substitutions needed...
The final deadline is 26 Jan, in case there are some NOCs who give back their quotas to the pool and reallocation is needed (looking at you UZB, give relief to FRA's pair team, and thus POL's dance team)

Criteria:
  • represents a qualified NOC and has a good chance of being sent should the Admin Gods allow
  • has/achives TES min
  • has a realistic chance of getting citizenship
  • hasn't yet competed in the Olympics representing their current adopted country
