Evgenia Medvedeva to train under Brian Orser

Just putting it out there, Medvedeva had the best possible conditions while training under Eteri. She is a Moscow girl and her family has lived in Moscow -- she was able to live a comfortable life staying at home with her parents and being the "star" of the rink from a very young age. Meanwhile Alina has left all of her relatives and lives alone in an apartment as a 15-year-old girl. Moscow is a very large and daunting city, and for a 15-year-old girl to live by herself without any relatives and even close friends is very, very difficult. She is the only one I have sympathy for in this entire chaos. Alina is the true "cinderella" that truly sacrificed all and any of her comforts to pursue her dream. Meanwhile, Medvedeva is having a case of "stardom", as they say in Russia. She wants to be cool like the cool kids training with Orser so she's throwing a tantrum by going there. Poor Alina is the true martyr in this whole mess. And, everything Alina has done so far is with her own tears and sweat - she deserved those scores (mostly) without fake jump GOEs and reputation scoring.

I certainly have a lot of sympathy for Alina's situation. Who the heck allows a 15 year old to live by herself? That sounds like it should be illegal....

But your perspective on Evgenia is pretty ridiculous.

Literally what? Can you maybe try and recognize the hard work and accomplishment of one skater, without putting down another? Also just to fact check, Alina doesn't live by herself, she lives with her grandma.

Does DW mean no more gaping mouth? If so I will be very impressed. :drama:

.....? what kind of fanfiction did I just read

Oh. Zhenya has back troubles too, so not just the foot.

Healing definitely seems like #1 priority here. Not doing smashingly in the season but healing.

Yeah, btw, that's the first time we hear of a back injury, isn't it?

Fanfiction? Seriously? The is coming straight from Alina's own mouth from her documentary in Russian. Oh, and here: https://www.gazeta.ru/sport/2018/03/07/a_11675221.shtml

So, yes, my bad - only her grandma is with her, but her entire family is in Izhevsk. Meanwhile she lives in a one room apartment with old furniture and rundown walls. Doesn't sound too luxurious to me.

lol don’t pretend you don’t know what I meant - your completely baseless accusations at Evgenia are ridiculous and you know it.

She iives and lived for the very beginning with her grandmother.

Yeah, I just edited my post. Full description of the poor living conditions though: https://www.gazeta.ru/sport/2018/03/07/a_11675221.shtml

Please compare this to "poor" Medvedeva living with her family in upper middle class family and full support 24/7.

My accusations? Do you mean my facts?
1) Flutz - she gets POSITIVE GOEs for a flutz. This is a fact. Also +GOE for UR jumps with >90 deg prerotation.
2) Reputation scoring: her PCS scores are unwarranted, even considering the general PCS inflation of most Russian skaters.

So no, I don't see anything "baseless" here, nor do I see accusations. These are facts. My point was that she is having a great time, and she is being spoiled because see above #1, and #2. Now, she wants even more. And even Russian people are beginning to see this. I don't have time to post social media posts here but I'm sure people are capable of investigating.

It wouldn't surprise me if basically ALL skaters have some kind of back issue. I'm not saying this to minimize Evgenia's injury, but just to acknowledge the reality that elite skating has enormous wear-and-tear on the body, and that there are plenty of injuries that skaters experience and that do not prevent them from training or competing, but that do cause them regular pain and discomfort.

Like, I know Ashley Wagner has a lot of back pain, which is one of the factors that has made her spins so not-great over the past few years.

Why are we comparing Evgenia and Alina living conditions again? What does her moving to Orser have anything to do with this?

And how is anything about this Meds fault?. We all have our issues to overcome. Med has worked very hard her entire childhood.

It is not a tantrum to decide you want a different training environment. To decide you don’t want a coach who is constantly training up multiple competition. And to take control of your own skating.

Clearly Med is trying to handle classy way. She refused to badmouth Eteri even in private. Eteri could learn from the 18 year old.

Yeap, it kind of freaked me out  I always was against of these conspiracy theory about 'Eteri's skaters are always injured', however it seems like it was not only broken foot all way long...

I think both Evgenia and Alina have made the best of the circumstances and challenges they have experienced so far in their lives - and I admire them both.

I think many skaters have some back pain/issues and we don’t know about them all.

I was not aware of Alina’s living conditions until now - though I did know she lives with her grandmother. Sounds like a crowded apartment with so many pets and a big dog too :)

Why are we comparing Evgenia and Alina living conditions again? What does her moving to Orser have anything to do with this?

A lot. The point is, that videos like Koola King's that show Med "escaping" to Canada are hilarious. She is not "escaping" anything. She was having a great time in Moscow. But being in shows with the big shots like Hanyu makes her want even more international fame. There's even a verb for "being a (pop) star" in russian, lol. It's not that her conditions were terrible that she wants to move to Orser. And it's not like there aren't other great coaches in Russia. It just gives an impression that she wants more fame and glory through international connections. It's pretty clear also from the way she conducts herself while running the Ice Age show, but probably more so to native speakers. Again, I'd like to believe it's not the case and she's just genuinely wanting to improve herself because she feels stagnant with Eteri. But based on what I have heard coming out of her own mouth it's just a little harder to believe.

Gurl, You’re speaking to someone who’s been highly critical of Evgenia - I am not disagreeing with you - her flutz is terrible and her axel isn’t any better - her GOEs are ridiculous. Calling her basically a diva is baseless - it’s not “spoiled” to want to leave a coaching situation she is not happy with
