Hello!
As it happened to a lot of people, after watching Zhenya at the Olympics I fell in love with her skating. I've been lurking here for a while, but decided to make an account just to say I think she's being incredibly brave.
I don't think this is an Adelina/Yulia situation, I think it's the opposite. She wants to continue. She wants to fight. She wants to be on top. She doesn't want to be just one of the many 'Eteri girls' that come and go, she wants to be Evgenia Medvedeva. She wants to take charge of her own destiny and create her own, unique path. It takes guts, it takes confidence, it takes determination, and she's showing us she absolutely has all these qualities.
Whether it will work out for her, it remains to be seen. There's lots she can't control. But I can't help admiring her courage, taking the step into the unknown. It would be very easy just to keep her head down and stay with Eteri, accepting her fate as an 'older' skater. But she's not doing that, she's not going down without a fight.
Inside that fragile-looking body, there is a lioness. But we knew that already, right?
I can't wait to see what she does next!

This is not about benefiting from Orser but mostly I'd look at it this way:
- Med has been with Eteri for 10 years, she surely saw whatever happened to Polina Shelepen, Yulia, Pitkeev... etc there is a pattern here. It might not be all the faults on Eteri but this tendency has shown that Eteri might not be able to deal with adult skaters yet.
- Too many young girls with huge BV are coming and training with them is stressful.
- Med is not getting younger, she is 18 and as far as we have seen, Eteri has not made any 18(and above)-year-old lady successful.
Moving to Canada is risky because of
- Money for long term, it's going to be 4 seasons and TCC is not cheap.
- Will her body come back to her top form after this long rest?
- Will she be able to fix the technical issues?
There are a lot of questions to be done. But moving away is a well-thought move. The rest is up to her now. She needs to be healthy.

Exactly. Well said. Zhenya does eveything right so I hope for a statement from her thanking Eteri for coaching her for 11 great years. Wishing Sambo 70 good luck and that she is looking forward to her new traning camp. That is a all she needs to do.

Not really. She should do what benefits her in this moment that is very precarious for her.
She should only do that if she believes it is true or if she made herself a good deal, the latter being the most likely. Leaving Russia is hardly an easy thing to do and she has just proven she plays the game so very well (or her agent does for her but details). If if wasn't pleasant and spilling that actually nets her gain, then she should do that. But that is unlikely as RusFed cannot afford that to happen.
Anyway the announcement will most likely be that it is an amicable break-up.
Don't read anything into it. It may or may not be because these things are never to be taken at face value. Ever.

What? Eteri favored Zhenya over Alina and obviously preferred her to win gold over Alina. I think Zhenya needed a change. After 11 years with one coach who can blame her?

I have to think Eteri is stung by this a couple years after Yulia fired her. But I agree with you that this is more amicable breakup than Yulia leaving Eteri. Now Zhenya starts anew. It is what she neefs.

Seriously Eteri does not favor Med or Alina. She is practical like Russian fed and rightly so, whoever brings medal it does not matter. The matter is the medal.
Favored Zhenya from a profesional point of view... I don't think so....
Some people behave like Zhenya belong to them and she must please them. Many Russians think that leaving Eteri and Russia is a treason. Cold war is over. Zhenya closed comments on instagram so i guess something bad was written.
I think niche sports should use crowdfunding. i support my grocery more than Zhenya, i would like to support Zhenya more directly. 5euro every month is nothing but x1000(i think there are at least 1000people who would support Zhenya in this way) it is more than she earns from isu prizes:
1st place US $ 18,000 and she must give some percent to Rusfed and Eteri crazy
2nd place US $ 13,000
3rd place US $ 9,000
4th place US $ 3,000
5th place US $ 2,000
those numbers are so small, i dont know why, just 2gp and one 1gpf, skaters are poor people
so if Orser is around 100000-150000 i guess she should try it. not only her, all skaters should have account. people buy mascots i guess skaters need money more. I would support Zhenya and Trusova(sorry Sasha i am not big spender).
in every cult there are martyrs and prophets. they are persecuted often

Agreed. This is the best way to handle it for all 3 parties. But I do wonder what Eteri is thinking and if Zhenya let her know of this change ahead of time and in person.

She definitely knew that Zhenya was leaving.
I would bet you that what she didn't know was that the announcement would go out like this, with this timing. This was a nightmare for all of them, which probably means there was pressure on Zhenya of some sort beforehand.

She closed her instagram? Zhenya is feeling the heat of this decision. But she is a great Russian sportsman and helped get Russia in the olympics as OAR and people should be thankful for that. If some people dont like her now because she will train in Canada thats not fair. She will still only represent Russia. Russian tennis players have trained in America for 25 years so a Russian figure skater training in Canada should not blow peoples minds.
Why is it a nightmare for all of them?
The official announcement is planned for Monday, anyway... I don't think that 2-3 days matters... and people already suspected that Evgenia is leaving.

She could have made the announcement and said thanks to Eteri for 11 years together but that she needed a change a new voiice and needed a new challange. I hope she will still say that or tweet it or whatever.
Zhenya has nothing to apologize for though she is great.

Because they were caught off guard, before a weekend. Oh 2 days matter all right. This was classic, perfect, strategy. Perfect play by her management. It is so rare to see good stuff like this in the skating world, which is partially why I was so giddy yesterday. She's tied them all up, like hogs. All the info she wants is out before they could preempt any of it. They can now just grit their teeth and let her have what she wants, while she plays nice and shows she's a team player actually. Ahhh. Perfect
Well. If they are all smart at least. We'll see.

It will end up okay though. I would hope Eteri knew and that this did not blindside her. This move is probably hard for Zhenya. Honsetly I wish I could have made bold moves like this in my life. It is not easy to do what Zhenya did and shes only 18 and beloved in Russia by fans and her teammates.
