Yes, that's great! To be honest, I had no doubt that her Loop and Salchow would be up to a very good standard, they are some of the best in the ladies' field. With Brian she can focus on improving her toe jumps + axel so that they can also get a high GOE in the new system.

May I just say how lovely is to have you here, Urtica. We see so many Russian Zhenya haters that it's easy to forget she does have Russian fans, too! Thank you for being here and reminding us not all Russians are like that :)

I wonder if any major changes in her technique can be made at this point... But I think her flip is fine, all this talk about toe picks and prerotations is among fans only, ISU seems to be fine with Zhenya's variation. Her prerotation is withing the allowed limit, and she is not prone to underrotations if in good form. Thank you very much, KiraraChin! But honestly, I have an impression that those are only few obsessed crazies. They create multiple accounts on all existing boards (even here!) and post 24/7 while normal people ususally have their own things to do, so they make like 3-4 comments and get fed up with forums, and their voices are not heard...

My main thing with her flip and her toe picks by extension is that if her tendancy to toe hammer is part of the reason she ended up getting her stress fracture (I can't remember whether it would be the same foot) then it needs to be sorted out. If she hadn't had that fracture this season would have gone so differently and I don't want her to get an injury like that again for reasons due to her technique being flawed. I guess the other advantage is that if she can do some work on them then they will be bigger and get her into the +4/5 which she needs to be as successful as she has been.

Yeah it was, and that's how she jumps her Lutz as well, so changing her technique could be a good idea :)

I think her stress fracture had more to do with overtraining. The last-minute program change did not help either. At JO she skated a brand-new program very well, I don't want to imagine how many extra run-throughs she must have made.

Now that you're mentioning it I got interested too. :biggrin: But the toe pick is made with the front of the blade, isn't it? I think it wouldn't reflect that much the foot itself. What might have been the reason is performing too much jumps (overtraining) because it was her landing foot that got injured.

I don't think her technique can be reworked completely at this stage of her career, but I do think that if she improves her flow, speed and strength her toe jumps will also benefit from it! The flip as you said is fine, Lutz and Axel are where she can improve the most :) especially the lz, but she seems extremely determined to do so considering she's jumping it so much at DOI!

I also disliked 2A-2T-2T, I hope she changes it! She could attach 2T-2Lo to something else for example!

Yes, I also disliked that 2-2-2 combination, I'm pretty sure they'll change it and find a different solution this year. I want to know what her program will be, I hope there will be an announcement soon!

Basically, it's when you slam your the toe pick, into the ice, like you're putting a hammer to the nail, and you're bending the lower part of the leg to do it, which is also a "hammer-like" motion. The better technique is to launch FROM the toe pick.

Here's Jason Brown flip's jump (it's his favorite and arguably the best, praying Brian can get him a 4F) -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxtt1O6S3Zo#t=3m25s. You can actually see, he just kind of launches from the toe pick and doesn't bend his lower leg at all.

I don't think Zhenya has the WORST hammertoe. I've seen it worse, but if she can adjust it, it wouldn't hurt.

Hammertoe is when a raises the leg that they toe-pick with very high and sort of 'kick' their leg towards the ice :) If you have technical questions you can ask them in The Lutz Corner ;)
