Evgenia Medvedeva

Let's give a round of applause to Misha Ge - he picked the right program for Evgenia, and boy is it gorgeous. :clapper::clapper::clapper:

Zhenya is in good position to medal and could win gold if Alina falters. Zhenyas confidence is rising.

I'm not an expert in figure skating scoring but somebody said SS the euro champ had a clean short program and finished in ninth. Hmmm.

Zhenas LP has been better than her St this year hasn't it? so she's actually in good position.

The question is is she being given the respect of a two time world champion?

Zhenya has to rely on the mistakes of others to medal, let alone win, while being utterly clean herself. She's not in a bad position to medal I think, but a win is a looooooong way to go...

Also, the field at Euros was significantly easier than it is here, Sofia being 9th isn't that big of a surprise, everyone who beat her besides Zhenya and Alina is not European.

I‘m not going to talk much about other skaters but Alina and her score looked very strong today. And it‘s not only her, there‘s also Rika who always comes back in the FS and is only 4 points behind as well as Tursynbaeva who all of a sudden doesn‘t seem to need a quad anymore to get really high (PCS) scores. If she manages to get ahead of Kaori, she could end up in 4th altogether and that would be great. However, a medal is not very likely at this point. She would need to be 100% clean because we‘ve seen today that the judges are not willing to overlook anything for her. The gold, if you ask me, is completely out of question. This is not me being pessimistic, it‘s me being realistic. Why would I act as if a gold was likely if it is not at all? But for me that‘s not as important. I would LOVE for her to capture the bronze, of course but the fact that she is here, at the World Championships and has just shown a clean SP is an amazing achievement in itself. I want a clean FS and a happy Zhenya. Everything else is beyond her control. I will root for her, of course, and the judges to get it right. Go, Zhenya and fight!! That‘s all I want. :)

Sofia scored 72.88 at Europeans and 70.42 here. 2.46 pts different. If Sofia had scored 72, she still would hv been 6th.

For Evgenia to medal, maybe. To win, very longshot cos the others have higher TES. Rika has 3A, Elizabet 4S, some others hv more difficult combos.

Yes, the gold is out of the question, 100%. This time, I am even 99% sure of who will win. A medal is also unlikely, I would be glad to see a strong skate, that Zhenya can be happy with, that's it.

Small interview with Zhenya:
https://tass.ru/sport/6239099

"I had doubts about my combo - it wasn't good. But I'm glad to have finished the program without any serious mistakes. That's good for me at the moment. Sure, I performed twice as good at practice sessions, but step by step I have to overcome myself and I'm on the way."

"I have fulfilled all my dreams as an athlete - I was at the Olympics, I've won everything twice. There are people who dream to go to the Olympics and I'm absolutely happy. What I'm doing now, I'm doing for myself, my family, the audience and the history of figure skating."

About the FP:

"To be honest, I'm someone who's always very careful at competitions. I've always been that way, during my previous World Championships as well. I'll try not to verdo it, and I have to show my all, skate clean and also finish the programs with positive emotions."

Small update, but here's a full audio of her interview(s) in the press corner where these snipets were taken from. I don't think I'll do a full translation, but here's a summary:
- she didn't know her placement at the time of the interview and was pretty content when the reporter told her she finished 4th
- says the season was very hard for her mentally, but the most important thing is that she's feeling good and got used to her team
- stresses, once again, that she wants to move forward and learn harder content
- when asked about how she's feeling going out on the ice for such an important competition, she says the hardest part was getting here and that she always feels a lot calmer competing at big competitions than competing to get a spot. Because if she's made it to a big competiton, it means she's proven her worth to be here
- says she's a totally different person now and has a very different mindset, but is sure that it's an ongoing process anyway and that she's going to change a lot more
- says how happy she is to skate and that everything she wants right now is to wake up and go to practice every day, doesn't plan on resting in the off-season
- she wants to stay away from social media and the negativity there and her family and loved ones help her to do so
- in the end says she and her training mates are planning to go out to the city together and eat at McDonalds

McDonalds? Remember when some of us thought she may be going vegan as her big change in her body?

Never say never....who would have expected KO to win last year.

In any event just want her to be happy with her progress.

So nice that she has a close bond with her training mates. A happy environment is most important.

Hope she enjoys our Toronto summer. Always lots to do and nice weekend trips. And she may have the time to visit our real zoo!

Go Zhenya!

Probably not vegan

I avoid fastfood, but McDonald's in Tokyo serves an ebi burger, which is so awesome, I always make an exception when I'm there. :agree:

Can anyone tell me if first to go in a group is a good position? It’s right after warm up, which may be good. But maybe it’s too far from the last 3?

There's another interview with Zhenya for the Japanese tv, as I understood, she wanted to do her combo with rippon on 3T. Because she said she wasn't pleased with her combo, it was a difficult one. She started to perform jumps with rippons just a weak ago and because of a shaky flip she had to do a plain 3T. A qoute 'guess it was a reminder from the above no to jump above your head'.
