Evgenia Medvedeva: The main goal of the season — to be selected in the Grand Prix final

The world junior champion Evgenia Medvedeva who won the senior event of the Grand Prix - Skate America noted that the fall didn't unsettle her

— I went towards this aim — told Medvedeva. — It is pleasant that I took such a high place. And, despite the mistakes I made in the free skating, I'm quite happy with the result. The first half of the program I skated well, rather easily. There were some blots — I was stumbling on the path of steps. At the end of the program I have coped with the jumping elements, but only the double axel brought me. This double axel is not my jump.

— What did you think after the fall on that jump about?

— Only about the jumping combos. I needed to add a jump, and I thought how it would be better to make it.

— Does it mean that the fall didn't unsettle you?

— Falls happen at all athletes, and it is necessary to be able to cope with it. It is necessary to learn to rise [after a fall], go further, to continue with full power. Nobody can skate faultlessly always. All athletes want to reach a certain height [in a discipline]. But this ascension doesn't happen without falling.

— The leadership after the short program at this event added confidence to you?

— Of course. I had a distance from Gracie Gold in five points, and I came to the free skating more quietly.

— What spirit with?

— With a fighting spirit! It is necessary to come to ice only with a fighting spirit always.

— The Canadian figure skater on this tournament jumped a triple axel [with a fall]. What do you think about technical complication of the program?

— Perfection doesn't have a limit. But as I didn't try to come on a triple axel yet, and I won't begin to designate any concrete dates. I thought of this jump. But an axel is not mine. And if to complicate the jumping component - it can be at the expense of a quadruple Salchow. In the future I plan to master it. But I don't like to speak simply [to stir]. It is necessary not to speak, but to make it and work on itself.

— Your following event of the Grand Prix will be in Moscow. In the case of successful performance at the homeland there will be a chance to be selected in the final. Do you set such a task for yourself?

— Of course, I have such a purpose. Also it is one of main goals of the season.

— Did you set such a purpose from the beginning of the season? But you are only a debutant at the senior level!

— And what? The Grand Prix events are just thought up to athletes be selected in the final.

Yes, thank you! My favorite quote is this one:

Hello. Just stopping by to say that Evgenia has a new fan! I have to admit that her programs really didn't do anything for me at first during the test skates. However, I was completely spellbound by her performances at Skate America. She's so elegant! I'll be watching her more closely from now on and I wish her the best of luck for the rest of the season and beyond! :)

Evgenia Medvedeva: “Ice is slippery” that’s not about me

To talk with the World Jr Champion Evgenia Medvedeva after her triumphal debut in the senior series of the Grand Prix - it appeared not easily. The schedule of final day on the Skate America at its 15-year-old winner was painted about minutes — trainings of gala-performances, then the gala-perfomances. Only when there was the evening in Milwaukee, and in Moscow was deep night, an sms came to my phone - "I'm free"

The title is “It seems they passed me on red light”

- I decided to walk around the city, - from the words of the skater it becomes clear immediately - what kind of noise is in her receiver. - It started darkening already, if it is a little more - and it would be late.

- Oh, it means that I’ll begin this interview from a question — how do you find America?
- I’m for the first time in America. However, I managed to look almost nothing so far, because I didn't go around the city up to this point. What can I tell... here are absolutely different people. They’re very friendly, smile all the time. Oh, just now I want to cross the road and a red light burns for me, but cars stopped and passes me, - Zhenya speaks it, apparently, at the same time both with surprise, and with admiration.

- Did the audience accept you well? After all you competed with their favourite figure skater Gracie Gold.
- Of course, well! Yes, the American athletes were given a standing ovation - so they skated at home. but native skaters are accepted thus everywhere. I was very warmly applauded too, it was great.

- By the way, do you know that the US national television showed only the strongest female group of "Skate America"?
- Truth? No, I didn't know. It’s very pleasantly.

- Did anyone start recognizing you on street after this broadcasting, or not?
- About the arena, of course, people recognized, approached, took autographs and made a photo. But on street - it wasn't so.

- Was it difficult to acclimatize in America before competitions, to recover after the flight?
- No, long flights are not a problem for me. I learned to have a rest in planes. And acclimatization takes place much easier when you depart from Russia to America than when you come back. However, others told it to me, I don't know yet how it occurs.

- Then what was difficult?
- To communicate with people. I speak English, but not perfectly. And sometimes this ability is required because here is absolutely different lexicon, people just can't understand my accent.

The title is "I learned to turn a deaf ear to superfluous"

- Worried strongly? After all it was a debut.
- If honestly, of course, experiences were present. After all this is competition, adrenaline. But just the fear wasn’t present

- By the atmosphere, by tension had you any events in your career that are comparable with "the Skate America"?
- The similar situation was at the Junior Grand Prix Final last year in Barcelona. There are a lot of people on stands too, same there was applause, the spectators also supported roughly. And it is not to compare with ordinary junior tournaments, there are not many of people at them.

- You were in the lead before the free skating, but before it there were a skating of Gracie Gold wich been very high scored. Did you know about it?
- No. Though I also didn't stop up my ears, but I didn't hear the announcement of her scores. I’ve learned to turn a deaf ear to it. Earlier such things could disturbed me, but now I am so adjusted on a skate that I can even hear some words, but not to understand, how many scores they delivered to a figure skater who skated before me.

- The last starting number in a warm-up is a problem for many skaters...
- Of course, to be out of ice about half an hour — it is long. But on trainings we fulfill such things. Therefore, I wouldn't call it a problem.

The title is "Memories of last victories is not my method"

- In the television interview right after performance you said a such interesting phrase - " the way you work, that's how you skate ".
- Oh, well I simply said whatever came uppermost, - Zhenya is laughing.

- I've just thought — after all many figure skaters often tell "ice is slippery", explaining some failures.
- It would be strange if ice was not slippery! - the athlete says ironically. - No, this phrase is not for me. Everything depends on ourselves. If you are ready enough — everything has to turn out.

- What place this your victory will get among all others?
- I think, the first. Because it is the next stage of my life — moving to the senior figure skating.

- Have you a corner for cups and medals in your home?
- Of course! There is a rack (“reyechka” ☺) on a wall on which all medals hang.

- Do you often reconsider your performances?
- On mood. To analyse something I shouldn't watch video — I just feel what turned out well and what was bad. So I know it myself. But if I need to recover emotions which I skated with — then I reconsider the skate.

- To be adjusted on a new performance, are you helped by memories of your last victories?
- No, it is not my method. Oddly enough, I try to live for today. What has passed has passed, and there is no point in dwelling on it.

The title is "At school I am not a world champion, but the same child"

- In this off-season you worked over the short program with Alexander Zhulin, and over the free skating - with Ilya Averbukh. What impressions remained from communication with them?
- Both persons are very talented though it, probably, isn't even a reason for discussion. They are absolutely different people, but both are madly creative. It was a pleasure to work with them.

- Was it difficult to perceive their ideas?
- I wouldn't say it. If work goes harmoniously, it's not a big deal.

- What program is more pleasant to you — short or long?
- Probably, it is not a correct question, excuse me, - the skater answers laughing.

- Yes, that’s I blundered. It is the same as asking whom you love more — mom or dad.
- Yes, precisely!

- Zhenya, it’s clear that the figure skating is on top of your list, but does time remain for something else?
- Of course, the sport is the main occupation in my life. But in the evenings I can draw, I watch movies. And, of course, I do homework.

- Is it difficult to combine sport and school?
- Sometimes it can be difficult. But I’ve learned.

- Does everyone in your class know that you a world junior champion in figure skating?
- So in the whole school everyone knows it. But I never put and I don't put myself above others. In school I’m the same child, as well as all others.

- Now you won the first event of the Grand Prix. And what do you want to win most of all?
- I will answer as any figure skater will answer. Of course, Olympic Games!

Welcome! She is wonderful, isn't she? Now that her first 'big' senior debut is out of the way, she should be even better at Rostelecom Cup.

The CEO of Sambo-70 school Renat Layshev speaks about a victory of her pupil, the figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva at the Grand Prix event “Skate America”

"FOR THE LAST YEAR ZHENIA HAS GROWN"

- Renat Alekseevich, have you succeeded to congratulate Zhenya?
- Yes, by phone, but it was a call not from me but from our principal Sergey Solomatin. – R. Layshev says. - He congratulated her from all of us. We asked him to transfer congratulations from all our school, and also to congratulate the coach Eteri Tutberidze. We are very glad for her too. She has a stream of champions.
We wait for Zhenya at home as soon as possible. And also have been worried about her, waited for the performance. For the last year Zhenya has extended, grown, we expected that she can shoot already.

- How do you call her – Evgenia, Zhenya, Zhenechka?
- Zhenya, not Evgenia and not Zhenechka.

- How will you celebrate her? Can it be at a line, before the whole school?
- Well, firstly our children will go to meet Zhenya in airport, it is our tradition. We meet in the same way all our champions in different disciplines. It is important to support children, to show them that their results are necessary for someone. So they necessary for Moscow and Russia.

- At the school line what will you present her – a diploma, a teddy bear? [a teddy bear?! It was just told that Zhenya has grown… mm, though the Russian word “medved” is translating as “bear”]
- I think, a tea set in order that Zhenya had tea with parents.

- And a cake. Though, probably, she cannot eat cake?
- Slightly, I think, she can.

"OUR GALLERY OF CHAMPIONS BRINGS VITAL EDUCATIONAL FUNCTION "

- Have you a Hall of glory where it is possible to examine achievements of your pupils?
- We have a well-known gallery on the first floor. There are portraits of the best of the best on the both sides of it. It is gallery bears the major educational function. In day through this gallery there pass one and a half thousand children with parents. It is not a museum which is locked, the gallery works every day for education of children. And there is constantly changing information on the screen about the last competitions in which our children participated, with congratulations for winners, coaches. In the same place we celebrate our employees happy birthday.

- Is there a Lipnitskaya's photo on this avenue for certain?
- Of course, Yulia - is the Olympic champion. Not only photo of herself, but also of her coach Eteri Tutberidze and her mother. There is a photo where many children congratulate Yulia. There are all our champions, including Paralympians and deaf athletes.

- To fill up this gallery with Zhenya Medvedeva, does she need to become a world champion firstly?
- Firstly her victory at the Grand Prix in the USA - this is important for hundreds [!] of girls who are engaged together with Zhenya in the sport center "Khrustalny". Medvedeva's victory is more real and more important for them than Lipnitskaya's stardom [?]. Here is Zhenya, the same fragile little girl, who was engaged with them only yesterday, and already she wins at the Grand Prix.

"BOTH ZHENYA AND YULIA STUDY WELL"

- Now the growing period comes to Zhenya. Also it came already to Yulia. Ilya Averbukh who choreographed programs for both girls, considers that Medvedeva will pass this period easier than Lipnitskaya because of her nature. And how do you think?
- Figure skating is very thin subject, it is necessary to be a big expert to do forecasts. I am on friendly terms with Lena Vodorezova [aka Buyanova] for a long time and I always consult on her so she helped me to understand some things. Elena Anatolyevna Chaykovskaya works with us, I also address to her sometimes. After a communication with them I start understanding the kitchen of figure skating. It is like medicine - the main thing is not to harm. Therefore I will refrain from any forecasts.

- Renat Alekseevich, then tell how it is possible to get on well at study for Zhenya?
- Both of our little girls – both Zhenya and Yulia study well, there aren’t any claims. Though we have an agreement with the educational part, certain arrangements, after all our girls have indeed serious loads, but they are in time. After all, the Unified State Examination nobody cancelled, and nobody will hand over it for them.

This is a little late, but I congratulate Evgenia for her win and for creating a new fan out of me!: I just rewatched her free skate and it suddenly grew on me; it wasn't until the end that I found myself wanting to see her skate more. As the B.ESP commentators would say, "I could watch her skate for days." She was captivating, and I loved her skate regardless of the fall. A contributing factor must be the that (according to CBC commentators), she uses sign language in her choreography and I've been interested in that idea for sometime now so to hear that she's done it, so I sat up and took notice when I heard that. She moves beautifully, and I wish her good luck!

Also, I like her hair...

I was intrigued by the CBC commentary, too. I'm not one to dive into the 'story behind the program', I prefer to watch what's in front of me and make up my own interpretation of a performance.

According to the CBC commentators, Evgenia's FS choreography is inspired by the hearing impaired, who cannot hear the music and have trouble appreciating figure skating as a result... so her program was designed to be expressive as possible to convey the musicality in a visual sense.

Anyone have more info about this?

Here is the CBC commentary, btw:
