Lmao critics? As in the judges? You know like the professionals whose actual job is to determine whether something is good or not? Yeah I'd say they're pretty damn impressed. Or perhaps you mean like the 2 or 3 figure skating publications and websites out there? iunno, they seem pretty smitten too.

Ohhh I see! You mean like...us, the faceless internet people. The silent majority who has to suffer through all these disgustingly crappy Evgenia programs, oh the indignity! Um yeah I don't think Evgenia's too bothered trying to impress us "critics" as she's too busy winning over those whose opinions actually matter :rolleye:. Ughh what an inconsiderate little girl amiright?

Now, you're absolutely free to, as I do, hate her programs to bits but to come in here and trash the opinions of this fan who geniuinely enjoys her artistry (and yes, I'm big enough to acknowledge it for what it is even if I don't like it) as if your tastes are so superior and theirs is invalid...it's so petty. Aren't there already like 20 other threads in the main subforum (which mysteriously never get removed) in which you can trash Evgenia to your hearts' content started by that one wannabe Ph.D in FS scoring whatshisface? To act like her career's in some sort of imaginary slump (lyke zomg if she doesn't switch choreo asap her like, entire career is gonna implode cause lyke, crtics zomg) just because she can't win over the strongly biased of this forum is wishful thinking. Wishful, as in you wish, in case that wasn't clear.

Seriously, I don't even like Evgenia's skating in it's current form and under normal circumstances, I couldn't care less what's being said about her...but when literally every damn day more and more of you wannabe elitists come out of the woodwork to stir up "controversy" with your passive-aggressive comments and dumb threads like "wow Evgenia can't even jump," or "wow Evgenia has zero artistry why is she winning everything" or "Evgenia broke into my apartment and set my cat on fire" yeah it's pissing me off. How snobbish can you be? Take off the blinders. You're all in denial and it's sad.

I so want to join this thread because I like Evgenia a lot as a person and I want to share my art and support for her. But seeing this kind of post branding people "haters" when saying something not complimentary about a skater is kinda discouraging. I fear I will be branded a hater or hypocrite or a fake fan just because I said something critical about her skating in other threads and then go here and compliment her. Even tho I have defended her many times from people who think her love for things are part of PR stunt or something and those who were saying she won't shine this season because she fell once in a summer show.

But what's wrong with saying she's not the best interpreter? What's wrong with disagreeing with a fan's praises? You know fan threads don't need to be a cornucopia of compliments for skaters only. I think it's fine to express an opinion not complimentary as long as it does not degrade the skaters or as long as it's not over the line insensitive.

Having said that, I also think the multiple threads pin-pointing Zhenya's flaws are already over the line. We can do with just 1 or 2 and not singling out Zhenya in the title.

I think she's a lovely person and no doubt an absolutely talented skater. I think her jumps are muscled but they're NOT terrible. I think her scores are overly inflated and her programs have room for improvement. But just because I have an opinion about her skating, that doesn't mean I'm a hater. Because while I'm not a fan of some of the qualities of her skating, I also think she has a lot of great qualities like her dedication to choreography, her fast spins, her INCREDIBLE consistency, her ability to do triple jumps like it's no one's business, her beauty and charm, and so on.

We can be fans and critics at the same time and I think that's okay.

On another note, keep shining, Zhenya! :)

this is an epic overreaction but i shouldn't be surprised. my fault for bulldozing in without introduction.

i was sharing some input to berry8's question--why a talented and successful skater like evgenia has so many naysayers still? the answer is bc she's still very young and slightly one dimensional as a skater. as she starts to demonstrate different sides of her musicality and some refinement, i think people will stop starting '20 threads in the main subforum' nitpicking her flaws (tho no doubt a few will continue).

it's not trashing her to admit she's not perfect (yet). zhenia is doing great and is wholly unaffected by us faceless internet people, so what's the point in being sensitive to negative feedback as fans?

“True” or “false” belongs in math and science. Labeling a fan’s claim that X is the most beautiful, or Y is the most musical, or Z is the most artistic as false is in fact false because there’s no true and false category for what’s just a matter of personal taste. It’s also a presumptuous response because it implies that your opinion is truer than your respondent’s.

Personally, I wouldn’t have commented to such an opinion about X, Y or Z even if it were expressed in the Edge, but trying to keep fans from admiring a skater’s qualities they happen to appreciate in a designated fan thread is downright rude IMO.

Fans in many fan threads write what they’d have liked to have their favorite skaters to skate to, and nobody reacts negatively to their posts. Admit that that sounds very different from the tone of your posts.

Her angsty, pianissimo programs have brought entire auditoriums to their feet. She has nothing to prove to a bunch of Internet critics. Personally, I also think it’s more challenging to skate a pianissimo program in such a way as to move rather than bore people than to reach people with any other type of program. But that’s, of course, my opinion.

It may be that if there weren’t constantly appearing threads bashing Evgenia in the Edge, her fans would have been more tolerant of some criticism here, but when it’s basically their only refuge from non-stop criticism, I think it’s asking them too much to accept it here as well. Then again, trying to cut off an admirer on a fan thread or making it clear that you don’t appreciate a skater’s programs (not just one or two, but on the whole) would not likely be tolerated on anybody’s fan thread under any circumstances. If you find a skater too unrefined, too one-dimensional, too young, too whatever to appeal to you, why post in her fan thread? Wait till/if you start actually enjoying her skating some day, and meanwhile why not focus on those skaters whose programs you do enjoy? And let other people enjoy and share their enjoyment of whoever’s programs give them pleasure.

by your own logic, it's false to say 'no one interprets music better than her' as fact and then use that claim to call everyone a hater for not thinking evgenia is the best. that was my point, anyway.

i don't see the problem in discussing parts of my favorite skaters that i don't like, especially if they're things i know will/can be worked on. it doesn't make me enjoy them any less when others find fault in them either, even when i don't agree with their opinion. if disliking your fave's program is too negative for a fanfest then maybe that's taking things a little too personally.

to be really clear (and to end this conversation on a positive note) i do enjoy evgenia's skating. i actually really like her lyrical style and conviction in storytelling. i admire her consistency and grit. indeed i do find her very musical--hence my desire to see her try different music and themes in the near future.

I kind of think WRs are meaningless when there's so much inflation these days. But I love the fact that it irritates her haters so much. :laugh: Well done!
 
I have been there in person when several figure skating record scores were set... Volosozhar/Trankov SA 2013... Chan TEB 2013... Uno JGPF 2014... Hanyu GPF 2015... Tsurskaya JGPF 2015... and now tonight, I had the priviledge of being there when Zagitova broke all the junior records, Virtue/Moir set a new SD record... and to cap it all, Evgenia set a new SP record too...

As soon as Satoko received 74+ I knew a new WR for Evgenia was a strong possibility... and sure enough it happened...! Can't wait for tomorrow... can she make it a sweep of all three world record scores?!

It's like a curse. Cursed record. But otherwise, in the last season Evgenia skated clean only at Worlds. She fell at Skate America, stepout at Rostelecom, fell at Euro. So...

But it's sad anyway. :sad4:
