Evgenia Medvedeva

I'm a skeptic on this Medvedeva program. There are some nice moments in it but they're just moments and all at the beginning.

1. It's easy to dismiss the errors since it's just an test skate, but I have no doubt whatsoever she will have more errors doing this program than her previous layout. There is just a lot more she has to mentally process when she get's into her 2nd half of jumps. Her worst jumps fall/stepout wise wise are 3Lz, 2A, 3F in that order. Previously she was able to tick off a 3F-3T combo and the 3Lz and now she has to contend with the 3Lz and all combinations in the 2nd half.
2. Previously she had more crisp step sequences that balanced out her having to kind of skate through the music setting up her jumps passes... and now she has a less crisp step sequence with an additional jump pass in the 2nd half.

If I were designing a program for Medvedeva I'd go with 2A 2A 3Lz | 3F 3F 3S 3Lo with combinations on 3Fs and 3S with 3Lo as a back up. I'd also consider looking into what the Canadian ladies often do which is end with a step sequence(and often their choreographic sequence next to it).

(FWIW, I didn't like her FS last year at the test skate but did like it at the Japan Open)

It's a big jarring how awesome I find Medvedeva's SP and how skeptical I am of the LP.

You do make valid points, but this is Evgenia Medvedeva we're talking about, I have literally 0 doubts she can do it flawlessly when the real rush of the competition kicks in.
I wouldn't judge her step sequence so fast - I remember her messing them up at the previous test skates. And honestly I don't see how her StSq was not as good today, I'll have to rewatch when a HQ video is published. Care to point out something in particular?

She shouldn't change the layout. I would say she should keep the layout and add 3lz3Lo or 3F3Lo.

I also thought she shouldn't have change the layout. I know she is trying to get more points but it is better that she tries harder jump combo.

I agree with this too. :)

But honestly, I think she could have beaten Alina even with her old layout. Alina has 4 points higher base value (now 2,8 with Medvedeva's new layout). I don't see Alina's FS getting more than 8,5 PCS on average - which is 68 points, and Zhenya is not going below 9,0 PCS on average which is 72. So there's that - I feel like she should have just focused on refining her program to the max and skating clean and she could beat Alina without any risky changes. Their GOE's are about the same, so it will be really close, but Evgenia managed to go up to 76 points for PCS, if she does her program that well, Alina can't touch her.

After writing this, I really hate how much figure skating sometimes comes down to maths and numbers :ohwell:

Right now i like her FS even more than SP. The music is perfect and i like how it constantly builds up! Both new programs focus on allowing her body and movements to just exist with and respond to the music in impressive way.
but she was too focus after first mistake so the second part looks a little bit less light and less airy compare to the start and stsq. I feel like it has potential to be a an iconic program. and i know Evgenia is always getting better and better with season going, I think she still has to polish some things about her choreography.
and i want to see her dress.

What I'm really trying to say is that she has to overinterpret the music in the step sequence and underinterpet while she's doing all her jumps.

She should only do 3F-3T combo in the first half and the rest in the second half. Two triple-triple combos in the 2nd half seems like too much but knowing her, she will eventually be able to put it off. Also no shade but neither Alina nor any of the rest of the ladies are a real threat to her this season IMO.

I have to say, I've never enjoyed Evgenia's FP as much as I enjoy the new one. While watching it, I felt like she really loves the music she's skating to, and she was truly dancing to it. I'm slightly weirded out by the last music cut, I'd rather have it ending on a more powerful note, but I still think that this is a perfect fit for her for the Olympic season. And to think that she'll only grow stronger from now on and add more polish... this FP has the potential to be spectacular!

Love her new FP, especially after watching it in a better quality. Really happy with this. She is ready to fight for that Olympic Gold!

And I for one really like the final music cut, I think it gives us some relief, while the music during the jumping passes is so heavy and keeps building up, you almost forget to breathe.

+ There is no miming whatsoever so I guess those who hate it might quiet down a little now

"In a free program, I'm showing the image of, in fact, us all, because we are all afraid of the unknown and are afraid to take the first step.

At the beginning of the program, I draw a line of life, I try to make this step, but I jump back, because I do not know what lies ahead.

But with the help of faith, we all gain strength and self-confidence. At the end of the program, I do it with faith, " - said Medvedeva.

ALSO she is definitely following the theme of the show "The Leftovers" at least the way I interpreted it. I wish it ended with the 3rd music because it would be so dramatic and lovely. Also this is one of the few times where ending a program with the skater looking up would actually make sense. (Fans of the show, you know why.)

The music is not bombastic enough for Olympic. Remember people said Yuna Kim should have skated to Carmen and she might have won at Sochi? (It's not about the scandal, just saying that music choices matter a lot).
I would say her FS music when she won JWC would be better for Olympic than this.

For now I like her SP more. I don't really like some of the music cuts in her FS. I'm not worried at all about mistakes as I'm confident that she just didn't feel well. But I'm a little bit worried about the music and interpretation.

But everything can change next week once I can watch it in a good quality. Fingers crossed!

Now the only secret that's left is her dress... Any predictions on the colors? ;) I think sky blue will be perfect for her SP as it's about a soul and gold for her FS
