Evgenia Medvedeva

I think they took it from Zhenya's passport. Russian international passports use their own weird transliteration rules.

Great, they managed to screw up her name. Evgeniia
:-|
That's how you can transliterate it, really. i before ia. Although I prefer it with just one i.

One thing I wish they did is transliterate her first name as Yevgenia, to be honest. It just sounds terrible when it's not pronounced like that. It's almost as bad as "Ekaterina" not being pronounced as "Yekaterina" - Completely ruins the name.

True.
I like it as Yevgeniya. Just goes to show how weird transliteration is...

I would have rather transliterated it as "Evgeniya" instead.
Similar to "yu" in "Yulia" and "ya" in "Lipnitskaya" - it is not "Iulia Lipnitskaia".

In Bulgarian we only have a hard 'E' and use that instead of the russian 'YE' to say names like Evgenia and Ekaterina (which are popular here as well). So to me Yevgeniya sounds unusual.... And the two languages are very similar, mind you. Goes to show how tricky these things can be, kudos to everyone who tries to pronounce names the way they are by natives to said language. It's fine if you simply can not articulate a foreign sound the right way, but a basic respect is nice, instead of the "I'm gonna butcher the name anyway so I'm not even gonna try" mentality.

It's also a matter of tradition. Even those Russians who know how English 'W' is pronounced, pronounce the skaters' names as "Veir" and "Vagner". As well as English speakers spell and pronounce "Shoma" and "Higuchi", while Japanese (and Russians) say "Söma" and "Higuti".

By the way, written Bulgarian is the most intelligible foreign language for a Russian, even more than Ukrainian or Belarusian. No wonder you prefer a spelling that is close to the original. :)

It's from this interview: https://rsport.ria.ru/interview/20171105/1128263235.html

That's sweet! I do really believe they are good friends and support each other despite the media trying to make up the tension between them....
They are most likely not BFF due to their age gap but they are good friends and teammates, who help each other grow and develop as skaters.:agree:

NBC has always had it as Yevgeniya...

Every year, dozens of russian die of name butchering because of transliteration inconsistency...
Well at least they didn't write Yevgeny Medvedev like I saw in some posts elsewhere that make me wonder who's that russian guy for 5 s.

AHHHH, the schedule of PC is screwed up! , the last practice session ends like only 1h before actual competition, really?????

Thank you so much for the YT link.

I hope she loves it when she sees it :) Her love for anime is well known all over fs world and some of anime world thanks to her YoI support and her viral Sailor Moon EX, hope this being shown in the US makes her even more relatable and loved by more people <3
