Evgenia Medvedeva

Reading the russian ladies threads from 2015-2017 is so interesting especially the posts about Zhenya lol

Meanwhile it'll just make me more bitter that Russian skaters can't go abroad grumble grumble

Yeah same. I mean, obviously Eteri has worked fine for Zhenya, look at how much she has accomplished! But I can't help but think that even as amazing as Zhenya is she still has a lot of unexplored potential that a different coach could perhaps help her develop

As far as I know, in Russia high performance athletes are protected by the State, and they receive a salary from the Sports Federation of their country, as well as sports equipment. In addition, if the athlete is already internationally prominent obviously has sponsors who support him. Evgenia and other kids doesn't have to pay for classe, because Sambo 70 it's a State Olympic reserve. And the coaches, like Eteri, receive their salary from the State and not from the skaters themselves. It'ss different in USA, Canada, where Orser gives private lessons and is hired by the athletes themselves.

But when they first start, and skating in a neighborhood club, obviously they have to pay for their lessons, as they advance and gain notoriety in the circuit, I assume that the Federation takes care of them and move to a famous club like CSKA or Sambo . There are also private academies like those of Plushenko, but it also scholarship to promising students.

I think Russia has great protection in its athletes, BUT the environment is ultra competitive, and they have to keep up to keep those benefits.

So the large part of the reason why russian skaters don't usually have a foreign coach is going to foreign coach cost a lot, and i mean A LOT since they'll be paying for coaching, etc themselves, State protection is quite limited to Russian coaches and schools.

Quote for this article https://www.bustle.com/p/how-much-d...r-its-expensive-to-get-into-the-sport-8146666

Because of the significant investment, a wealthy — or at least financially stable — background is pretty necessary. Stories abound of supportive parents remortgaging homes, cutting down on expenses for other children, and making some extreme financial decisions to be able to afford the cost of sending an elite-level figure skater all the way to the top, and hopefully to the Olympics. Mike Slipchuck, director of Skate Canada, told the CBC that even as a low-level competitor, annual costs can reach $10,000 annually — but that the number could also rise to $30,000. If you reach Team USA, funding is provided and financial aid is also offered, but that's an elite pinnacle.

Once you reach the Olympics, expenses start to pile up, because the best choreographers, musicians, coaches and other elements of a successful competition come at a price. Every competition cycle requires a new routine, and getting the rights to music and coming up with new moves adds up on the balance sheet. Scott Hamilton, who won Olympic figure skating gold in 1984, told the Huffington Post that "I've heard everything from $25,000 to $80,000 a year. It can get out of control."

And everyone knows ISU winning prices are quite tiny...

Btw I noticed that for example in the opening of the SOI show, everyone does this synchronized jump\turn and Zhenya turns without jumping. So glad she's being really really careful that she avoids doing such a tiny jump as well!

I love Evgenia's interactions with everyone! she is so sociable. Her charisma and communication skills are enviable. I nominate Evgenia as president of the UN women.

I have seen that Daniil is already trying new programs. I wonder if they have already decided on Zhenya's programs. I just want she to break the common pattern , that Zhenya can show off in a beautiful choreography.
Eteri has said that Evgenia is very attentive and absorbs everything like a sponge, so I think she has learned a lot in Stars on Ice, and those little essays with other choreographers have also helped her.:)

I was curious, I'll go see

You should see what people were saying about her in 2013-2014 season. Everyone was 100% convinced that she was doomed to be a third tier skater with the SS of Surya Bonaly, who would obviously lose her puny jumps to puberty, and could never hold a candle to Proklova, Sakhanovich, or Sotskova.

But I was rooting for her anyway because that was the season I started paying attention to Juniors, because of all the buzz. I watched Junior Worlds and aside from Radio, I enjoyed Evgenia’s skates the most by far. And then, of course, she came out swinging for the 14-15 season and won everything she entered and kept right on winning her way through seniors after that.

To be fair to the naysayers, plenty of them converted the season she won Junior Worlds, which was admittedly a massive improvement over just the season before. It was one of the most dramatic one-season transformations I’ve ever seen from a skater:

You shouldn't, you will likely only get upset. Stay in fanfest is a way to avoid mental health problems xD

How bad is now?! Please tell me.

Russians don’t deserve her at all! Maybe only her faithful Russians fans, and only them. Funny, she cared russia in her back during all those years, even injured she delivered, the only one who did that and with so so much pressure in her back, and yet they only send hate to her!!! I really wished she could training in a different country or give her a new nationality, honestly this girl deserves so much more.

No need to know about it, it's in the past, and it's pretty predictable what they'd said.

What you mean?! About the predictable part. I want to know. Honestly, can’t be worst than the others things they said about her after she withdraw form the WC

Would be pretty much the same as cohen-esque said xD

And Max and Ambesi summed it up with

She is the one who wasn’t considered [a contender] as a kid, because all eyes were on Radionova. When she started to get good results in juniors, people began saying she was Lipnitskaya’s ugly copy. She is the one who has been hearing for two years that “if Tsurskaya is healthy as a senior, she can beat you, because she has that quality on jumps that you lack” - well, some of them, because saying that Medvedeva has no quality on jumps is a bit of a heresy, but it is objectively true that Tsurskaya has something more on basic technique and (jumps ’) trajectory.
I’ll skip the part about Sakhanovich - when she arrived at Eteri’s, people said Evgenia was over since Serafima was so much better - but anyway, everytime someone else was said to be better or was close to overtaking her, she managed to bring out something new and to raise her level."

Ahhh I see. I love the fact she is a hardcore worker, how she challenges herself everyday, and honestly, I don’t think we can understand this girl mental strength. People always expect so much from her, during all those years, and she delivered everyday, injured or not injured, she’s something else. I admire her for this so much, more than any other perfect talent athlete out there. Those qualities are hard to find.

I think it would be unfair to say 'The Russians' are/were some particular group of haters - it was in the russian skating thread where she got some harsh critiques but sometimes from non russians posting there. She attracted broad criticism (mostly unfairly) from across skating enthusiasts from every part of the world. Perhaps much of this was from *skater name* stans who saw her as a threat to the reputation of their chosen kweeen.

I think it's good to see these things with hindsight and not get too carried away with what people say in the heat of passionate fandom.

This is an excellent thread regarding the ideas behind who she was in the context of the months building up to the WC 2016 and how she was perceived - along with many an amusing speculation about how she would develop.

I do agree with you.

I think not most russians or people from all round think badly of her, it's just the haters are the louder ones.

The thing is, be hated for other FS stans, from different countries it’s one thing, like the crazy Kim’s fans, who hates the fact that Zhenya broke almost all Kim’s records, the other is receive hate from your own people, the Russians. Some of them really and still doubt it about her injury until now, some of them still hating her because she has withdrawn from the WC, any mistake she makes nowadays is a “grave mistake" to them. That’s is not the way you should treat anyone, especially a person who did what she did for them and for Russia. This unecessary hate they send to her, someone who carries in her shoulders the russian female FS for years, alone, delivering, day by day, even when she was injured, well, in my opinion, she don’t deserve get this hate from the people of her own country. She is the last person who should receive hate from them. But, they don’t care about her or about her health, they want medals, all the time.

Guys, we really are making a big deal out of nothing. Zhenya is beloved, she is the figure skater with the most followers on IG and is honestly really well liked. Being so popular, it's perfectly normal for her to have haters, both in Russia and outside of it. Let's not focus on something that, unfortunately, is true for everyone that has even just a little fame. Let's stay focused on the positives.

I know, but it’s getting very annoying. Everyday is a different hate in her instagram account, she can’t do anything without getting hate from them. Don’t surprise me that she’s using her ig so less, and sometimes when she uses, I see her responding to haters

Zhenya has very strong fanbase in Russia. right now it takes place teens idols award and Zhenya has 39%, Averina sisters 22%, Aleksandra Soldatova 10%, Maria Sharapova 9%(category female athletes, Zagitova isn't on list). She won toyota cup voting. Russians like her. beside Zhenya didn't cry while watching Hachiko so haters are not problem to her. During interview with Yagudin she said: if you don't have haters, you did something wrong with your life.

Some people are born to hate, you can't change it. now medvedeva, in future someone else. Like yoloaxel said we should ignore haters. zhenya approves she is so goofy:love:

Good for her if she stands up for herself! But it's not a Zhenya only thing. Literally every skater gets hate, and unfortunately it's not something that can be stopped, especially with someone so popular and well known like Zhenya. It's not gonna do any good to just come here and make it look like she suddenly has so many haters in Russia\outside Russia. She's always had loud haters - the more you win, the more hated you become. This doesn't mean that she hasn't gained a lot of followers and supporters too, especially at Olys. Let's just ignore the bad apples and focus on supporting her!
