Evgenia Medvedeva

Well, a year ago Zhenya also skated last for the lp at test skates making a lot of mistakes (i believe it was a fall, a step out, and two rough landings). Although people said that the program would get better it was just the beginning of a roller coaster season: change of program, injury, the Russian's ban from olympics, losing the gold at olympics and finally changing coaches and even country of residence. Today she also made two mistakes, but I think the feeling she left us is much better. She's only been training since the end of June and had to adapt to a new training environment and recover from injury while learning two competitive programs. I think it is quite remarkable.

I loved the support she received from the crowd, it was beautiful :sad4:

But what is it with Zhenya and lutz this season? I wasn't expecting this. Orser was right: they weren't going to hide it.

Backloaded two combos, now what did I say?

Good program, great showing. We need better video for particulars but overall, SP+FS together, the most important impression I have is that they are working on a lot of things with her and she's progressing. As the season goes, it'll be a more cohesive whole.
Also well done Brian, some good thinking with the Lz.

Just saw the livestream via instagram. The camera was bad, but I did note a few things.

I like the SP better, mainly because the FS music cut... it's bad. I know this is just my opinion, but the FS music cut is horrible. I could not understand what emotion the music was trying to tell, or what theme or story the first piece of screechy violin sounds were...

I'm a bit disappointed in Wilson for choosing a very bizarre music edit. That being said, the Libertango bit was exciting. The program kicked off from there and the step sequence was very unique and beautiful. Intoxicating even. Jumps and skating skills all improved. Choreo was good too overall.

But the music... I guess it's too late to change it.. Am I the only one confused by the first piece of music chosen?

LOL

or, rather,... *gasp* To quote Obi Wan Kenobi, "You were supposed to defeat Team Yata, not join them. You were supposed to bring balance to the fan fest, not lead it into pragmatic pessimism!" :) haha :) But, yeah. Yata has points. ;)

Well, I guess I'm in a minority, but I'm already sold on the FS. Love the music. This is one of those times where there's no theme or story (imo) she's just skating beautifully and I appreciate that a lot! Obviously she's still got a bit of work to do to be competition ready but this program was beautiful. The crowd was into it too!!

I agree with you to some extend. I don't understand why the exciting part of the music only takes about 30 seconds in the end, while the other 120 seconds are just not very interesting.
However, I do see the potential of this being a very lovely modern program, almost like Nathan's FS "Land of All". If the choreography is done well, it can be exciting and refreshing.
I hope to see that as they further develop the program, and of course, I wouldn't mind seeing a 4S in the FS ;).

Agreed! Some movements felt a little awkward and it looked like she started to tire after the fall but I trust the process. The step sequence has potential to be amazing imo; pretty and elegant, but still matching the 'sharpness' of the music.
Also, is it just me or did her -2T-2T improve? Maybe it's the angle but it looked more flowy and effortless to me.

I wanted to express one thing. I know everyone will decipher and critique and recommend various things for both programs or make guesses about how they might evolve during the season. But I think the most important thing from this weekend for Zhenya was that "she is back."

She returned to Russia after being in Canada training for months under new coaches and was greeted with huge banners and cheers and applause from her fans. She seemed to embrace and cherish it and I think it is something she needed to know. As a performer with so many changes this season and as a young woman becoming an adult, I think she probably needed some initial positive feedback. Change can be scary. She needed this weekend and I think from what we saw it accomplished these most important goals. Things haven't "really" changed with those who care for her or in the world in general, it is just growing and evolving. She is still the performer we all know and yet she is growing and will continue to grow and evolve.

Also, this weekend was the first expression of her new relationship with Orser/Wilson. She showed she has and will continue to strengthen under this new partnership. Perhaps she also showed to those who questioned it that this was the right decision for her to evolve as a performer and as an athlete. It works and we saw today the first "seeds" of this partnership. Programs will grow, change, and develop as they both grow to know each other better in not just this season but the seasons to come.

Finally, it showed that she is happy. All nerves aside, she looked happy. She seemed to be the happiest skater of all of those who performed this afternoon. Happy to be out on the ice, to meet her fans, and to be back in another season. She seems more comfortable in some ways too. Enjoying herself. And maybe that is most important of all for her as a person and as a performer.

Let the season begin. :)

Considering she moved to another continent, had to face criticism from so many people, and only started training with Orser back in June...I’d say she did pretty well. Can’t wait to see it in competition. (Trust me, fan cams of programs look so umm not good compared to competition cameras.)

A new interview came out after test skates:

Google translate:
Evgeniya Medvedeva, who flew from Canada to participate in the control rentals of the Russian team, shared her impressions of her programs and told about her readiness for the season.
"From the free program, disgusting feelings, because everything went, to put it mildly, not at all according to plan," Eugenia said immediately after the rental. "That's why I'd rather not talk about rental, but in general the impressions are just excellent, because I'm at home."

Medvedeva admitted that today she did not show everything on the ice, which she is capable of.
"Now I gained back 20% of what I can, even less - at 15. I understand this perfectly," explained the athlete. "To say what happened ... It would be silly to say any reason, because there should be no justification, but this is the beginning of the season. Brian and I work intensively for a month and a half after four months of rest. My head was off, I confess.
But the impressions are excellent, because, it seems to me, I was the only one supported, I was expected, and I feel it. This is incredibly cool, "- shared the impressions of Medvedev.
Also, Eugenia described how her adaptation is taking place in Canada.
"In general, this off-season was the most difficult period in my life: I had to make difficult decisions, I had to get used to it. Yes, I still can not say that I'm used to it. After all, I'm a Russian person, I probably will never get used to the Canadian culture. In my life, I changed everything - from the language I mostly speak to, ending with the food I eat every day. It's difficult to rebuild yourself. "

Eugenia told what they are currently working on with Brian Orser.
"We are now very intensively engaged in the restoration of my health in general. Come to Canada - another step will go: the strengthening of the body. Everything goes according to plan. The only thing: my rental went not according to plan, we will fix it, everything will be fine.

In the end, the sportswoman admitted that the support of spectators and fans is very important for her.
I hope you'll be rooting for me on "Autumn Classics", I need your support. Yesterday I skated well, today it was more difficult, because for the first time in a long time I go out on such a big arena. But I'm generally very glad that I'm here now. I just got off the ice, I was seen off with screams and applause, even for the most terrible hire, they shouted to me, "Bravo!"

I wish she was not so disappointed in herself. As she said in her interview it has not been easy for her
and I can understand the various emotions she was feeling being back in Russia. She has a good head
on her shoulders and I am sure as the season progresses things will work out for her. She has the talent,
a good coach and the motivation to succeed. GO Zhenya!!!
