Evgenia Medvedeva

Challenger scores are usually over-scored because they were trying out the new system.

Which is my point. If challenger scores are too generous (outside of ACI I heard) then a clean skate for Evgenia may still have a chance against Tuktamysheva.

Again, we have not seen a clean skate from Evgenia - we do not really know how she would be scored.

Guys, I warned you - I am super optimistic. Please feel free to ignore this if you want to take the “cautiously optimistic” route. And anyway, in the end as long as she medals her GPF hopes are still alive, which is really what matters at this point.

I've always had a soft spot for Mae. Shes one of the only black ladies single skaters right now. My family will be holding onto our pillows tight as Evgenia takes the ice tonight.

For those who are worried about her putting in the lutz in the SP, getting that lutz out there in competition is how her edge is going to be fixed over time. She can practice the outside edge in practice a million times and get it right and still flutz it in competition because of muscle memory and nerves. Right now they are basically retraining her muscle memory, fighting against years of incorrect edges. As a user said earlier, it’s really the judges’ fault for letting it slide so many years and then when she switched coaches it’s all everyone could talk about so now it gets even more scrutiny...on top of the scrutiny of a new judging system 😔

I love the short program, it may not suit her but I think she needs this performance challenge right now. I’m also very happy that she has the support of the Russian Federation President. There was an article when her coaching change came out that she has a lot of supporters in the RusFed, which is good. I hope their patience doesn’t wear out any time soon

She seems laser focused today. Crossing my fingers for a clean program!!! Add oil!!!

I will be performing a 55 minute long piano concert today at the same time as the ladies free skate event. Therefore I will not be able to watch Zhenya through the livestream. Oh well.

Afterwards, I’ll probably report to the skate Canada website for the results. While I love golden skate, I might need a few moments to process the scores and placements by myself :)

Anyways, I’m sure that Zhenya will do great! Quick question- has it been confirmed that Zhenya will be wearing a new dress for her tango program? If so, that’s exciting!

A lot of people had mention the program "not being for her" but Im glad she is trying different styles. That prove how versatile she can be and stop the cliche over the top drama she used in the past (no hate, clarifying this seems to be a rule now, cant blame it she is been through a lot). Legend skaters are those (for me) that had a diverse repertory that worked, who prove that no matter the genre they were able to sell it. Even if at first she struggle, now she looks more confortable. Im pretty sure she will do fine, she is a fighter after all.

Thank you, I definitely need the luck!

And I’m thrilled that we’ll get to see another new dress today! How exciting

Stricter than any challenger I've ever watched.
ACI hasn't been around long, but it has a reputation for having a tough tech panel.

The TCC skaters and coaching team seem to look to ACI for the feedback more than the placements.

At the other end, at 45, Skate Canada International is the oldest of all the GP events, having started in 1973. It's had a tough technical judging reputation for many years.

At the time it was created, SCI was part of Canada's sports outreach / detente to the Soviet countries, trying to bring top Eastern European and North American skaters together for something other than Worlds.

To have Zhenya, training in Canada and facing off against another Russian World Champion here at SCI is a testament of how far things have come.

Thank you for the history. I have only been watching challengers for 3 years.

The Challengers seem to be a bit of a mixed bag. I've been watching skating a long time, but it's only with streaming that we get a sense of what's going on.

Nebelhorn, which also existed before the ISU established the B series, seems to have more status.

And the scoring on the early Challengers and the Junior GP seemed a bit wild at times while the judges worked through the new scoring.

I'm glad Zhenya got the ACI feedback, but it is really hard to compare to the scoring at the European CS events.
