Evgenia Medvedeva

HUGE GOE on her 2As: 0.80 and 0.75, the highest of the night! Mako got 0.75 and 0.71; no one else was even close. Positive GOE across the board and nothing lower than a single judge's +1. Brian really has worked his magic, and so quickly... I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of Evgenia's until her move to Brian, but I'm really enjoying her skating now and looking forward to seeing where she goes from here!

I didn't watch the free program live. I made myself not, since I was very worried for Zhenya.

When I looked on the results page and saw Zhenya made it to 3rd as I predicted she would need to, I was shocked. Even more so when I saw that she had been 1st in the free.

As I went to watch her performance, I was shaking out of happiness for Zhenya.

I'm so happy.

Evgenia really is special. She has something that is innate and cannot be taught - GRIT. When she came out, you could see that she was ready to fight.

The TES was below what I had expected, but I think this is a case where the process was more important than the result.

Her dress is gorgeous and really suited her so much. To see it in person, ah! For me, this is the best costume she’s ever had, and absolutely, the best she’s ever looked.

Well done, Evgenia!!!!

Does anyone know who made her FS costume? It was gorgeous! Not the biggest fan of her SP costume but much better than last time haha.

For real, Zhenya needs to give up attempting three lutz in her program at least for now. The judges have become much stricter starting from this season with the new rule, and they are not sparing Zhenya's lutz as before. I think she should only return to this three lutz plan after her lutz is a legit outside edge.

Evgenia really won me over last year. There is something about her that draws you in.

I see improvement in her skating this year- Mao fixed her lutz, Med can too!

I will be performing a 55 minute long piano concert today at the same time as the ladies free skate event. Therefore I will not be able to watch Zhenya through the livestream. Oh well.

Afterwards, I’ll probably report to the skate Canada website for the results. While I love golden skate, I might need a few moments to process the scores and placements by myself :)

Anyways, I’m sure that Zhenya will do great! Quick question- has it been confirmed that Zhenya will be wearing a new dress for her tango program? If so, that’s exciting!

I performed at my violin concert today too! I missed the live but I got to look at the result straight after I came off stage so that was fun.

Wow I was so happy watching Zhenya in Free. She's a true fighter! I knew she wouldn't let herself be buried in the rankings :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Am I the only one who's satisfied with the scores? I mean, they really did call her edge and UR. Also, IMO, PCS was right. With this scoring, I'm intrigued how they would score Alina. Will her PCS also drop?

Congratulations, Zhenya! Amazing skate! :hap10::hap10::hap10:

I performed at my violin concert today too! I missed the live but I got to look at the result straight after I came off stage so that was fun.

I definitely thought about Zhenya for a moment as I was playing my pieces. When I found out she skated well after my concert, I was so happy! She’s such a fighter

You guys, I read that Evgenia said in an interview (don’t know which one) that she couldn’t sleep and asked Brian to give her a pep talk at 1am to get her in the right mental state.

I’m so happy

Oh god, I was so worried for her, but waking up to this result is a huge relief. I won't be able to watch the skate until much later today, but knowing she pulled herself back up and won the free gives me joy!

I hope our girl is blinkin’ proud of that bronze medal. That’s a real ‘I earned that’ moment which should really give her confidence moving forwards. How about those axels!! Lutz is gradually getting there and I think they need to keep biting the bullet and going on with it because it is improving. Otherwise they’ll get everything sorted this year and have another year just trying to sort out a jump or she’ll never have it and lose the technical content. Spins will come, she’s doing a lot of new positions.

Really pleased the judges are appreciating her basic skating skills in the PCS and not knocking them down to ‘match’ the TES (I know that’s what they’re meant to do but always liable to inflate or deflate based on TES rather than what they watch).

Good outing in the end! Well done Zhenya!

Thank God Evgenia managed to get a medal. I’m so proud of her and… relieved!!! It is still possible for her to make it to the GPF, although we must be prepared in case it doesn’t happen, because she will be facing a tough field in France. However I think that if she had to miss the GPF in this new cycle this will be the best year to do so because I think she could still make it to the world team (Pogorilaya in Evgenia’s first senior season didn’t make it to the GPF and she still won a world medal that season) . The following years would be tougher though, with all the juniors coming up, but that’s another story. Besides not making the GPF will give her more time to prepare for Russsian Nationals. Don’t get me wrong, I want her to qualify for the GPF, but I’m just trying to be positive in case that doesn’t happen.

I really like Zhenya’s new hairstyle and the fs dress. I like the colour of the sp dress but I’m not convinced about the shape of it.

Talking about the programs, I think the problem with the combination in the short happened because lack of concentration, as Evgenia explained. I think she still isn’t used to that kind of ‘extrovertive non-dramatic program’ and that might have caused her to be less focused. I still think that having the combo backloaded is a good strategy (unless she upgrades it to 3F3Lo), at least for this season (because this is the year to make mistakes!). Still, if she decides to change it to the first half, I would totally understand her.

About the fs, it was much better here than at ACI. She obviosuly needs to practice more her spins and needs more stamina not to underrotate her 3Lo, and, of course, just one Lutz, although the fact that they came here with 3 Lutzes makes me think that in practices they are making great progress with the edge.
So for IdF I think that they’ll go back to the ACI layout. Although I don’t know if it would be better to put the 3S as the last jump so she doesn’t get a 3Lo< if it’s just a problem of lacking strength at the end. I was thinking about a layout like this:

3Lz, 2A3Lo, 3F, 2A/ 3F3T, 3Lo2T2T, 3S.

Now, Evgenia has received a lot of criticism about everything, but the one that I can’t stand is that the style of the programs don’t fit her. I mean, come on, she has been doing the same imposed style for five years (I’m not criticising her older team for doing so, no one can deny that it really fit her and allowed her to win A LOT of competitions) but she needs the chance to explore other styles and choose the one she likes. Of course at the beginning it’s going to be difficult for her to get used to them but that’s normal SHE NEEDS TIME, and experimenting with new styles can only help her grow as a performer, and if in the end she finds that her former style was the best then she can always call Averbukh.

Last, I’ve searched on wikipedia Yuna Kim’s competitive highlights and I found that she was third in Canada in the first year of the Olympic cycle (it was also her first year as a senior). Now, I don’t know if she was coached by Orser back then and I’m not trying to compare Evgenia to Yuna. But we can learn a thing from Yuna's competitive record: NEVER GO BACK TO SKATE CANADA!
