Evgenia Medvedeva

I'm finally going through my videos and photos from Skate Canada and I found a video of Zhenya's SP from the warm-up practice last Friday. Enjoy. :)

I promised I share some thoughts and I know they're super late, but you can take them for what they're worth. :)

Anyway, the first thing, which I mentioned in my Skate Canada recap, is that I almost didn't recognize her at first. I want to be careful how I say it, but I'll say that she looked good. She looked healthy and strong and I noticed more power in her skating from when I saw her several years ago (2016 Worlds/Team Challenge Cup).

But the girl is not soft, not by a bit. I think people think because she's still getting used to the transition and because she's so personable that she's suddenly lost her competitive chops. Pretty much at every practice I went, she was all business and focused. She would wave and smile at fans once in a while, but she didn't take any time to take gifts or do autographs afterward.

Her double axel looked great, as everyone noted (you can hear the woo-hoo from the audience member in the video above, lol). Her lutz was right where I was sitting (3rd row) so I had a good look at the edge. It's definitely not out of the woods, but it was definitely more ! than (e) at times. You can tell she's still getting used to the new technique, but I do believe it's starting to click. Her 3F-3T looked good and she consistently hit several of them in the ladies warm-up --- it was frustrating to see her miss it the one time she needed it -- in the competition. It's going to take some time for the muscle memory to take hold for the new technique, but there was a lot of small wins, like the good 2A and the overall better skating.

The audience was LOUD for her, as you guys heard. It was not just Canadians though, I heard quite a bit of Russian in the rows around me, so there are likely Russians living in Canada or Medvedeva fans who traveled to Canada to see her. She has plenty of international fans, such as the cute 20-something fans who made the flower crown for her. I met one of them -- he sat with me and another GS-er during the pairs/men free skate. There was another group of Canadian skating fans that made signs in Russian and wave them at her when she skated past them. She waved and smiled when she saw the.

I wish I got to meet with some of you who were there, but I had a good time texting with Novicefan during the ladies free skate! Man I was so nervous for her! But she did so amazing. As I said, her determination and anger made that tango work. But I hope they'll keep working on the feel of the tango. I really love the dress for the FS -- I think it looks better in person.

I really enjoyed her interactions with Brian during the practices and warm-up. Brian is very much have taken her under her wing and it's quite endearing. And she seems quite comfortable with Brian, which is great! I also really loved seeing her interact with Liza during the medal ceremony. It was like they both realized they had an opportunity to prove that you can have a long-term career as a Russian ladies skater. In a sense, I think Liza's win was motivating to her because it was like she could see the future for her if she was willing to put in the work and endure the tough times.

I think she's definitely still a work in progress, but I expect she'll do even better at IdF.

I really appreciate your relation from competition.

What we see in TV is often so different from what we can experience in ice rink. I’m so happy Evgenia receives such support from her fans without getting distracted. I’m quite optimistic about TdF. SC was unfortunate when it comes to SP but I saw huge difference performance and quality wise after the month from ACI so I believe in France it can be even better :D

I was thinking at some moment about attending TdF but unfortunately university won’t let me take Friday off. However I hope somebody from Zhenya’s squad will be there to support her and to give us later his/her thoughts

Food prices in Canada...

Not sure where you were shopping or what for in Vancouver. There are some things (fish and seafood) that are so much less expensive, even as compared to US cities.

Zhenya's mum likely has found some good places in their area in Toronto to shop.

Some basics like dairy and eggs are under supply management, which means Canadians pay at the cash register as opposed to through taxes (agricultural subsidies aren't a thing in Canada).

Imported fresh produce can be dear due to shipping. The Canadian growing season is short.

Whole foods does have a store not too far away in Toronto terms. Not sure about public transit there from the TCC area. But I can't say their quality here is what I knew in the US.

:otopic: In terms of quality for produce, meat, bread, etc., I prefer Farm Boy, which is also normally less expensive than Whole Foods. Though they've just been bought by Sobeys, so I don't know if that will change at all. I don't think there's one near TCC though. There are 15 in Ottawa because it started in the area, so I go there all the time when I'm home. But only a couple in Toronto currently.

I'm not even going to try to catch up in this thread. I bailed a couple of months ago for her fan forum because of the negativity here, and in my absence, there have been a million new posts made, but I said I'd make a report on my first live skating event, and so I will copy my post from her fan forum and share it here. I would also like to echo most of what Mrs P said, although I would correct her on one point: Zhenya briefly met fans, received gifts, and signed autographs on Thursday. I know, because I trotted halfway through the stands to reach her just as she finished up and turned to leave. Doh! :gaah:

I was on my phone the whole time, and I'm more comfortable posting thoughts with a laptop than a phone, so I mostly just uploaded pics and videos (but not nearly all of them), and now that I'm home (I arrived a few hours ago), I'll give my thoughts and experience at it.

First off, I was there at 7:30 AM for practice on Thursday and watched all of the morning practices from all of the skaters before leaving for a few hours and returning later for her LP practice, and my first impression was that I shouldn't be this excited about seeing a figure skater, but my adrenaline was pumping and my heart was pounding, anyway. The practice on Thursday was open seating, so I was able to get really close to the ice, and it was thrilling to watch her skate by from just a few feet away.

After watching the two practices, I felt really confident that she would win this competition. Liza also looked really good, and so did Mariah Bell, but I thought Zhenya looked the best out of all three of them, and she had her murder face on for both practices. You could FEEL the intensity coming off of her. She's very charismatic in person. Then she was killing it in warm ups before the SP, and she was nailing the SP until...she wasn't. The image of her stumbling on the combo is just burned into my consciousness. It's all I really remember from the program except for the way I felt, which was devastated. I felt so bad for her in the kiss and cry; she was so obviously upset, and there was just nothing that I could say, even if I had been face to face with her. It seemed really bleak.

Then Yoloaxel pointed out that she still had a decent chance mathematically, and I tried to take heart. I was up late, unable to sleep after the SP, so I could not get up in time to watch her practice on Saturday, but when she came out for warm ups before the FS, she looked focused and maybe even a bit angry. She looked great in the warm up, but as she skated the program, I just sat on the edge of my seat with my heart in my throat, holding me breath each time she jumped. I didn't start to relax until she was about halfway through the final spin, and I will not forget how proud of her I was or the elation I felt when I leaped to my feet and cheered as she finished. This time, watching her in the K&C was a joy, because she was happy and stress-free. I was so worried that she might be building up a mental block or something, but she looked relaxed, relieved, happy, and confident, and that STILL makes me feel good about the competition. That's more important to me than the fact that she bounced back and medalled, but of course,. I'm glad that she did.

The gala was beautiful. Her taste in music is not my own. She has turned me on to a few things, most notably some anime movies like Howl's Moving Castle and Mary and the Witch's Flower, but she has not turned me on to K Pop or Kristian Kostov, although I gave both a small chance. I really couldn't stand the "Get It" tune of his that she promoted, so I was cringing when this EX began, but the song was actually alright, and the performance was beautiful! I've watched it several times now, and it's becoming one of my favorite EXs. That she did the choreography for it makes it even more special.I see growth in her choreo from the Experience program. She's just so very talented!

Anyway, those are my experiences from the competition, at least surrounding Evgenia.

Her FS practice was actually in the morning, so it was her SP that I returned for, but whatever.

Nice to hear from ya and thanks for sharing. Sounds like an experience you’ll never forget :2thumbs:

What an amazing way to put it into words! Although I have watched figure skating only through television, I always get super excited and anxious too.
I always stand on my feet, hold my breath during the jumps and scream silently.
Glad to know that are others that take this sport to the heart too.

Thanks for letting me know! I’m glad to hear that. My report was strictly on the practices I attended, which was not Thursday. I mainly made the point to note her focus not so much to say she didn’t want to meet with fans of course. She is quite a warm person, but still a competitor!

I will definitely not forget it, and I loved Montreal! I intend to return for Worlds in 2020, and hopefully, she will, too!

Well, for the SP, I was mostly just pumped up and excited. I honestly didn't expect her to blow it, not after the way she skated in practices and the warm up. After that though, I was a nervous wreck. She shook my confidence, but I shouldn't have doubted; she redeemed herself like the champion she is. :hap10:

She is definitely a competitor!

That was a good competition; there was lots of excellent skating and several heartbreaking moments, and no one got seriously injured. Also, I saw my two favorite Russian ladies skaters, Liza and Zhenya, and they both won medals. :yahoo:

Curious about this - is Ghislain Briand also a part of Evgenia's coaching team?

Yup..Farm Boy's our place too. But there's just one in the GTA at this point, and it's in Etobicloke.

There's 2 T&T Chinese supermarkets nearby. They have fairly good selections of produce too. Don't know if Zhenya and her mum would be going there.

Actually, in terms of a gift card Shoppers Drug Mart might be a good choice. They are everywhere. Some of their stores carry full lines of high end makeup and skin care products. Not sure how much she's getting of that from endorsements.

No Brian? I guess Japanese Championships have to happen at the same time then...

Zhenya's mom said Brian was going with her to the Test Skates but not to Russian Nationals precisely because Japanese Nationals takes place at the same time. But I'm sure she'll get more than enough support with Tracy there, I would even bet David Wilson will go as well.
