Evgenia Medvedeva

If you're interested, messages of support are being collected here for the next 2 weeks or so. It will then be printed and made into the encouragement book to send over to TCC for Evgenia.

Are y‘all going to hate me if I say Raf would have been a great coach for Zhenya, too? He has that “tough love“ approach Eteri had, he greatly helped Mariah Bell and Marin Honda, Eunsoo Lim is also doing really well under him and he could speak Russian with Zhenya. He also knows how to teach jumps.

I’m not going to question Zhenya’s decision since everyone and their mother seems to be doing this already just noting that I like him and his well-informed, supportive and never dismissive interviews and think he and Zhenya could have been a great team. But it doesn‘t matter since she‘s at Team TCC now and they‘re still getting to know each other so once they‘ve worked everything out, the interaction will seem more natural. Zhenya is very different from Yuna and Brian has still to learn/accept that. But I think he slowly does. I really like Tracy. She is always radiating kindness and calmness. I hope she can help Zhenya at Russian Nationals. It‘s a shame David Wilson won‘t be there. While I liked many of his programs in the past, Zhenya‘s aren‘t... well, they aren‘t up to either her or his standard. They are good and I enjoy watching them (if Zhenya doesn’t bomb and breaks my heart :( ) but not “two times world champion“ good. That‘s all I‘m gonna say. I hope Zhenya gets to work with different choreographers next season and gets programs that fit her a bit better. I still think two completely different styles at once was a bit much but that can‘t be changed now anyway. I really hope Zhenya and her team get to know each other even better and realise together what their goals are and what they have to do to achieve them.

I like Raf too and think he's a great coach :) Ultimately, I think Zhenya wanted to go to TCC because of the environment there and because it's so different from the Eteri camp so that's why she wanted Brian. That's just how I see it, I could be wrong. Of course, in a parallel universe I'd love to see what Raf and Zhenya could've done together. But who knows, Raf works with a lot of people over the summer and choreographers are at his rink sometimes so maybe she'll get a chance to spend a week or so with him at some point. That'd be fun (but would also probably start rumors, unfortunately). Regardless, I'm thankful that he's using his influence to support Zhenya despite having absolutely no connection to her. It's really nice.

I'm with you about David and her programs this year. There's no shame in the programs she has right now but they're clearly not best suited for her. I still think it's possible she can make them work at some point, but they're never going to be her best program, that's for sure.

I admit I expected Evgenia to win in France through sheer force of will. But I don’t think it’s bad to hit your limits sometimes, in order to find a new way forward. It’s a mistake to throw out the long-term plan because of a bad competition. It’s easy to be a fair weather fan to be right in the short term. But look at Tuktamysheva. You’re only “done” if you stop. 3Lz and 2A look better to me.

I know we're kinda "hating" on her programs right now, but if you rewatch them from ACI, where she's much more relaxed, you can see that they can work for her. Thoughts and prayers for her to be able to cope better and just go out on the ice and slay like the queen she is: because she has the ability to perform anything she's given as long as she's in the right mindset.

I agree with this 100%. I think once it all clicks and she is able to get back into the proper competitive mindset (after the appropriate time has passed for the new methods to really be ingrained in her system) she will be fine. These are all speculations of course, but it looks to me like her team underestimated the effect of the pressure to Evgenia, and Evgenia overestimated her capacity to deal with them, so the problem was not put on the table to be properly addressed. Now that this happened, I hope they are able to address them properly because unfortunately, they do not have the luxury of time. Russian Nationals is fast approaching.

At least for me, I guess part of the "frustration" about this whole thing, IdF in particular, was that it was such a low-hanging fruit. It was truly within her reach. This whole season, I feel like if she could just be in the right head space, she could take it all even if what she is working on technically is still cooking. However, I am a huge believer that things happen for a reason, and that in hindsight, things will make sense.

Nobody's going to hate you here, this thread is our safe place. :) In my opinion, the transition from Eteri to Raf would have been a lot smoother because 1.Raf is Russian and 2.kind of a tough coach, therefore it would have been a rather familiar environment for her. Although he has a fame of a good technician, his ladies tend to struggle with underrotations and I can't imagine that those would have spared Zhenya, especially after her body changed. His packaging is not that good neither, they all get the typical "North American" style, pretty similar to David Wilson's work for Zhenya this season. I would say..that taking Rafael as a couch would have been a logical choice but not necessary the better one. But who knows what will happen in the future.

For me it's too soon to say that going to Brian Orser was a bad idea because he has some goods which will benefit her. I would rather wait at least until next season. I am actually fine with mistakes on competitions, even with not medalling at all. I kind of even expected this to happen and I am not disappointed from her as a fan, it just breaks my heart to see how devastated she is right now. I maybe too naive but I don't think her career is over but it's all up to her if she finds strength to keep on.

One of my biggest concerns is if her team is setting the right goals though. It looks like as if she's the one who is supposed to get comfortable with them and not the other way around. Zhenya has a light soul, she's very emotional and tends to cry often even though we don't see this. But I don't think that if Brian supports her at the K&C it will trigger some tear outbrust. She needs to know what went wrong, why and how it can be imrpoved. She deserves a solid support after her skate.

And I don't like the play with the media, the silent war against Eteri (or even the entire Russian figure skating culture) with words like "Evgenia is happy with us, we made her an adult, she decides by herself". Say it once, it's fine - for us as fans totally interesting to know how the dynamics at TCC are going on, but to imply this in almost every interview is not nice. This triggers even more hate towards her.

Edit: and on the topic David Wilson... I was never fond of his choreography and he did exactly what I have expected - just a regular choreo that has no sparkle in it. The tango is better but I think that's because Evgenia has added her own flare to it *look at the ChoreoSeq* I would die to see her work with Stephane Lambiel, I know this will never happen but a girl could dream :D

I think Evgenia will try different choreographers -- Stephane and Misha Ge as well. And I agree that Brian needs to be careful what he says in the press, because it is Evgenia that gets the heat. I think things will improve, because I think the team understands better that she has a light soul.

IMO (as a Yuna super fan - just so my bias is clear lol) - David's programs I have only ever loved on her. I think her style and their close relationship is a facilitator of what made those programs work. For Evgenia, I just don't think David is a compelling fit for her. I would absolutely LOVE for her to get programs from Shae-lynn bourne - something super modern and un-conventional like what she's done for Marin's SP and Nathan.

i am dreaming with you lol! i could watch stephane skate for days, his choreo is always amazing !

i agree with everyone that it will be so exciting to see her explore new choreographic angles in her perfomances over the next few years. i think this season is just the beginning for her trying out new styles :)

I'm not going to discuss what happened at this competition. Sometimes athletes have good days and sometimes bad days. Things happen. Injuries happen. As fans, we just continue to support them through their ups and downs because we're all people and we all have bad days.

Zhenya will persevere and will shine again. And we will stay with her through her good times and bad.

TSL with a fairly apt take on the entire situation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyz7C71xAq4

I know people give them crap around here, but I thought it was really well thought out analysis of Zhenya's current situation. They really seem to want her to skip Russian Nationals and maybe even be selective for the rest of the season, but we all know that won't happen. They did say it seems Sandra has taken a step back from working with her team, which is a little puzzling.

Yeah they refer to a few episodes before that where Dave (from TSL) mentioned that Sandra told him that the TCC team haven't brought her back in yet to do more choreo for Evgenia, because they want to focus on her jumps and technique before they advance her choreo.

David also dropped an interesting note about "delaying puberty for as long as possible".

I don’t know what the boys were implying with that, but Evgenia’s body has changed over the past year. I thought it was the combination of weight training and working with a nutritionist.

Yeah, I don't think puberty is the right term in Zhenya's case for her body changing, since 19 is usually much past that. Nevertheless, I agree that I think they mean to say her body is changing, due to probably the weight training and new diet with working with a nutritionist and all. I'm not completely sure but I would assume that these kinds of body changes might still throw skaters off their usual axis in the beginning and would take some time for adjustment.
