Evgenia Medvedeva

Well, now at least we know who to blame... Nah, honestly, I hope WTT is not assigned by fed but rather by invitations. Has she seen how people reacted towards Zhenya at Nationals? They love her! So much to the: “she‘s not the girl we originally fell in love with“ Yeah, obviously, Sherlock, she‘s older now and won‘t be as perfect as the pre-pubescent girl who won Worlds in 2016. She’s grown both mentally and physically. And also, she’s injured. Instead of accusing a skater that did so much for her country of not being the same person that never falls anymore, support her now that she needs it. Now would be the time they could give something back to Zhenya. Instead they once again decided that if you‘re not 100% ready and the star you once were, you‘ll be kicked away sooner than you can even say “flutz“.

Sorry for my ranting here but that is beyond ridiculous.
It was already asked in one of the group's and as far as I know WTT is assigned by invitations

I don t think so. I remember that in the year Pogo bombed at Worlds, RusFed named Radionova to participate. There were voices that this wasn t fair, as Pogo had a very good season (up to the Worlds) and Radionova missed the team.

Completely agree with everything You've said!

Well can anyone please tell that woman that she neither disappeared nor have we fallen out of love with our zhenya? If Russian nationals showed one thing than the fact that she is and will always be loved by so so many people. Naturally she isn't the 15 year old girl anymore she matured and has grown up which is natural since it is the natural process any human being goes through. But she is still the wonderful , beautiful talented young woman we fell in love with. God how do I hate someone like this

Yes...It's outrageous and so sad. I believe the huge part of it is Zhenya's decision to change coach.

To have something positive to think about, Zhenya has posted a new pic on instagram.

She seems to be good friends with these girls, Stasya and an ice dancer, Nastya

Here Nastya posted a pic with Zhenya. She looks like a girl from one of those really old paintings in it.

Yes so they still exept her to build bear ears in the kiss and cry at the age of 19? To still smile everytime almost 24/7? The lightness? Did she mabye think about that people change , internally as well as externally. That she was is still injured. That the past year was also mentally really hard. Than the attack in the media from eteri, the hate. What do they expect after that? That she will still smile all the time that she would stay that innocent child/teen? If so than she and the others need a reality check cause that's not how the world works.

In general many people would need a reality check. They say: Why change the technique of a two time world champ? Well, maybe because that two time world champ showed signs of her jump technique starting to fail her already last year? Because that said two time world champion is injured and likely won‘t be able to compete jump wise with the new wonderbabies? Because that two time world champ will never learn 4Lz or 4T or whatnot? Because this is her only chance to continue, to have the better basics, the better technique in the hope that one day it gets rewarded and in the hope that building up on better technique might be easier? If they don‘t realise that staying with her old technique and coach would have lead to her having at most one more year of being on the podium and then having her body burn out completely a la Lipnitskaya, they are being delusional. Zhenya made the only choice she had if she wanted to continue skating. Maybe she won‘t win as many medals, maybe she‘ll never win any medal again (which I seriously doubt) but at least she has a chance at happiness and health.

Times are changing, the little girl with the bear ears has grown up and faced the harsh reality life has to offer. I hope for her own sake she‘ll be able to prove them all wrong.

This woman is from the same rink where Eteri trains... And she is the main coach of Federation... Guess that's why no Universiade spot. Actually, I am heartbroken. Come on, to say, that Zhenya has no charisma...

It was expected. As soon as you don‘t win, you‘re done. I mean, I like Stanislava but how often has she failed in the past? She completely bombed worlds last year. Zhenya never did that. But for some reason she has lost her charisma and everything else too. Yeah, give me a break. I‘m sad, too. It doesn‘t look good for future prospects if the fed acts like that already.

I think that it was a huge reason why she changed. With those injuries she had the doctor would have told her the truth that if she continues to train like she did before her body will give out much sooner rather than later. We will never know if eteri would have changed her entire trainings technique to help zhenya. And really what she did at the Olympics was testament to her pure strength, will, determination, she basically forced herself to be fit enough. She wasn't 100 percent fit at all. And yes her jumps became inconsistent last year when the injuries with her foot happened. Which is normal since it is the foot with which you land your jumps on.. I do believe she has the will and the talent to get a 4s mabye even a 3a . So yes in my eyes it could have only been a choice between orser and mabye mishin since he seem to care about his skaters skating longer and staying healthy as much as possible

Wasn't this what Brian was alluding to? Quality over quantity.... for example, you can't just keep trying a 4L hoping you will land 1/100. I think he is stressing, you have to learn the right technique to jump it so that you have a better land-fall ratio. He also said (very tactfully) that he understands that with Evgenia's previous team she used to do a lot of repetitions, but since she has grown, that's just not the training method to go by anymore.

Also, Brian did say in his interview that sure, they have 3A and 4S in the plan right, but that most importantly, he wants Evgenia to put first and foremost, the quality of skating.

Tchaikovskaia loves Orser.

She thought that Evgenia's move was a mistake because she knows from experience that joining a new coach is very difficult, and so far, can you say she was wrong?

I can and will state that she was wrong on saying that Zhenya‘s move was a mistake. I won‘t say she is wrong on saying that joining a new coach in general is difficult, though. It is - and that’s why people should give Zhenya more time.

And Zhenya did the right thing, changing coach, whether or not it works out in the end. Not because of results but because of the fact that Zhenya couldn‘t have stayed with Eteri any longer. She was unhappy there and her body couldn‘t have taken the training approach they have at Sambo-70 that is well suited for little children‘s body but stops working once an athlete matures. Brian Orser said it very respectfully and tactfully. He knows that Zhenya’s old training consisted mainly of repetitions and that he knows they will need to find a way for her to both keep some things of her old training method but also adapt to the new one. Because it simply isn‘t working for her injured body anymore.

Sure, she could have gone to a coach in Russia and nobody would have bat an eyelid (or at least not as much as the outrage were when she dared to go to Canada) but if she doesn‘t want to, why blame her? I think she‘s learning many life lessons and even if the move doesn‘t work out results wise in the end... that‘s sometimes more important than medals.

And I‘m honestly just confused... what else should Zhenya have done if not change coach? Maybe choose a different coach but who says it would have worked out with him/her? It was clear that she had to change coach. And in the end it was her decision anyway and nobody should have a say. Rather, people should support her and have a little trust in her for all the things she‘s done for her country. :scratch2:

Even if Zhenya's training doesn't pan out the way she or they want it to, I think this new experience will be/has been fantastic for her. She is a worldly young woman, and if she wants to stay in the figure skating community post skating career with choreography, broadcasting, or even coaching -- the fact that her English is getting so fluent is a great thing. She's well beloved by so many former skaters and exposure to new choreographers can only be a good thing.

My mom said to me when I was so down after Zhenya‘s SP: Whatever happens, as soon as this girl goes professional (she is an oldschool fan) she‘ll get all the money. She has everything needed to be successful all over the world. She is intelligent, creative, friendly, incredibly artistic and speaks two languages fluently. And most of all she loves skating. We‘ll see her for many years to come. And she also said they (Russians) had better be nice to her because if the Canadians are too nice to her... well, they might find themselves in a situation they don‘t want. Not going to specify that because I really do not believe this will ever happen but still: Better be nice to your girls, Russia. Many would love to have them. ;)

I actually love that Zhenya‘s such a worldly person and that‘s one of the reasons why I admire her so much. She loves Russia with all her heart and yet she lives in Canada, loves Japanese anime and Korean pop music and is friends with skaters from all over the world.

You mean a grown up thought the decision was going to be wrong because it was going to be difficult? :palmf:

I do understand the anxiety actually. Mostly, in Russian figure skating, it‘s “now or never“. There really isn‘t a longevity approach. So, it might seem to some that Zhenya‘s move was a total and utter failure.

But I‘m asking again: What else should she have done? Zhenya said it herself, changing coach was her only way to continue her career.

Is there a way to write things in spoilers on GS? There’s something I’d like to say but it’s not on the current topic of conversation so if someone wants to skip they can
