Evgenia Medvedeva

I agree with your entire post especially how the system is no good and that freaking Kazakhstan gets three spots like Russia does for euros. The ISU needs to do something to make it more like tennis and golf wear those producing and a certain season get to go to events. If Russia and Japan or America or whatever country have that advantage and a certain discipline then they need to be rewarded for that better than they already are. My thinking is if evgenia can surpass Liza 4/4 then she becomes the alternate for Europeans and worlds which is fairly important. But for sure 5th Place where the great talent top to bottom with a Russian ladies is a very nice achievement even for someone like Zhenya who has done so much.

Agree with you Scott, If they want to make Figure Skating a sucess, they have to change the system and be more like Tennis.

Many do not know but 1alternate is decided by the Coaching Council. About placement after FS, 5th place would be an archievement with broken boots. It could also end in a disaster with a low score...not much to win for her tomorrow. If it does not work in training and if injury risk are high, then I hope she WD.

I'm just afraid of her doing SEVEN jumping passes tommorow. I dont think it's worth it. Do Rnats decide funding?
On a purely selfish note, I'm happy she's switched to the ice fly(if they are her permanent boot). I think they look a lot better than the pianos

RNats is a factor but it counts the whole season to be named for the National Team and receive funding (at least this is what I have read on russian forums).

I'm sure she doesn't want to let her fans down especially considering a lot of them probably traveled quite far to see her at Nationals thinking it was one of few chances to see her in Russia this year... That's probably her reasoning. Along with not wanting to disappoint or anger RusFed and the general audience. I do agree that the risk of injury and risk of an understandably rough performance is too much, though. It's just a tough decision.

And... about the first part.... Imagine if you couldn't see half of the ATP Top 10 at grand slams because of some arbitrary reasoning, like the country they were from. Tennis would be much less appealing. This is a different discussion, but top athletes are easily marketable around the world on the merits of being top athletes, so if the question is marketability, it shouldn't be. I have no doubt that Russian ladies (especially with their depth and complexity in all of their individual ~narratives~) could garner a bigger worldwide following than the current system allows them to.

They can do it in a way where it's more like tennis but still smaller federations get to send skaters as well. But this thing about Kazakhstan having as many spots as Russia is ridiculous. If libet does not skate this year and they lose those three spots or two of the three spots then they should go to another country or two. I'm not saying eliminate small countries like Kazakhstan but make them earn their way in like the Russians do.

A couple years ago in America ESPN televised Russian Nationals where are they now? We could have really used to see this competition today. From what I gather evgenia finished a very solid 5th Place with her crazy boot situation. I sure hope they hold up for the free skate.

On a lighter note, this is pretty hilarious:

Sambo-70 is where the Ministry of Sports money is coming from and the accreditation. You better be wise not to bite the hand that feeds you in these kind of relationships.

And I don't doubt Yevgeniya's patriotism, she will rally to stand united if Sambo-70 is in any way compromised in the current struggle for supremacy in Russian ladies.
She'd have switched alliances long before if she and Sambo-70 felt in any way awkward with each other.

But matters of politics don't belong in a fan thread like this one.

Today, Yevgeniya earned the respect of the nation and most professionals that matter, and tomorrow she will do the same.

When the thread that separates sport and politics is so fine, it leads to these issues being treated in a thread of fans like this.

About not biting the hand that feeds you, Zhenya isn't actually fed only by the Ministry of Sports/Sambo 70 hands. Zhenya, unlike the rest of the national team, is also fed by her own hands. Maybe we don't know what does each hand pay. But we know that her coaches and ice (perhaps the most expensive) are paid by her own hands.

I have no doubt about Zhenya's patriotism. But about tomorrow winning the respect of the nation competing again, honestly if she decide to prioritize her health and withdrew deserve the same respect. Not forget that just as there is a big part of the nation that respects her, there is also a big part of the same nation that since two years (when she decided to change coaches) has constantly defamed her in a shameful way.

It’s devastating but she needs to withdraw. It’s clearly not working out and it’s just not worth risking her safety.

Let me tell you, if she pulls a clean FS with that broken boot it is going to be a freaking miracle. After seeing that run thru it is looking pretty bad for her. The boot issue is affecting her lutz, flip and axl. Idk why this is happening to her, it breaks my heart. Such horrible timing.

Honestly, if she withdraws she is going to get bad press, and, if she competes and does poorly she is still going to get bad press."dammed if u do, dammed if u don't."
Poor Zhenya. All i want is 4 her not to injure herself again.

Oh God, all of this is so awful. Zhenya, please, you need to withdraw. This isn't worth hurting yourself.

I''m heartbroken for her....she's improved so much, coming from a clean 2 program event, mentally and physically ready and this happens....
Things just suck sometimes

I also think she should withdraw. The boot issue is so unfortunate and it's a shame that nobody is helping her. :(

Please, Zhenya, withdraw. Nobody would blame you and you proved that you can do amazing things in the worst situations. We love you, please don't get injured
