Evgenia Medvedeva

I'm sad, but I agree with all that has been said - she looks happy and healthy and we have all the show content to look forward to as well.

It will be different watching competitions without her - Zhenya is the skater who got me into watching the sport properly and nothing ever feels the same without her.

I think one thing this season has shown us though, is that even when she isn't competing she is never fully out of the picture. Skating is her life, she's said it over and over, and even if she doesn't skate competitively again there are shows, coaching, and all the opportunities being a legend gives (team of firsts captain etc!)

above all I'm thankful to have been able to follow her competitive career so closely over the last few years! It's been a wild ride ❤️

I will support Zhenya no matter what. If she is stopping competing entirely or just skipping the season to heal more and planning on coming back next year. I think her saving Masquerade and Alegria is not without reasons. As others have said Zhenya won't simply disappear from our minds. She is active in the sport in showd, she is a star and considering her plans on becoming a coach we will likely see her at competitions again in maybe a few years, just in a different role ☺️

Zhenya flies to Sochi the day after tomorrow. She said that she always thought pairs was interesting even before the Anna Karenina show and wanted to try it, and her coaches offered to write Enbert. She wrote to him on instagram "teach me how to pair") They all worked out great.
And then Ilya invited Zhenya to the Anna Karenina show where she skates as a pair with Enbert

That is so great. Enbert looks thrilled to skate with her. They look great together.

Interview with Zhenya
"Evgenia Medvedeva, two-time world figure skating champion and two-time Olympic silver medalist, Olympic silver medalist, will play the role of Kitty Shtcherbatskaya in Ilya Averbukh's production of Anna Karenina. The other day she held a training session in the new Chkalov-Arena ice palace on Lotnaya Street, where she worked out the elements of the ice performance. We managed to talk with Zhenya about the new role, the transition to pair skating and about his hobby for Japan.

"By nature I am not such a flower as Kitty"

- Zhenya, do you skate in a dance duet now?

- Yes, and for me this is the first experience. According to the plot, my heroine is married to Levin, played by the skater Alexander Enbert, and I have to constantly remember that I am paired with him. To perform, I had to master the most difficult elements of pair skating: spins, jumps and even lifts. But with Sasha, I'm not afraid of anything. Even if I get scared in the air, I will catch it with one hand on the fly. As for Kitty, for me this is a very important character. She is also a seeker, and it is easy for me to understand her image, emotions. This role is in my role, and I don't have to strain too hard to get used to the character. Although personally by nature I am much more explosive than Kitty, I am not such a flower as she is.

- Do you already have experience of participating in the ice show of Averbukh?

- We have collaborated with Ilya before: in the children's play "The Wizard of Oz" I played the role of Dorothy. But there I was a single skater. Today I am very glad that I have joined such a great work. Together with me on the ice are such stars as Oksana Domnina, Roman Kostomarov, Maxim Shabalin, Alexey Yagudin.

"Not my favorite book"

- "Anna Karenina" attracts the best directors in the world. The novel has been filmed more than 30 times. And you also skated your Olympic free program in the image of Anna Karenina ...

- Initially, we staged Anna Karenina as an indicative number. The first time I skated it at a show in Japan. I felt this image well, got used to it. Everyone liked the performance so much that we decided: why not take "Karenina" for a free program to the Olympics?

- Zhenya, have you read the novel yourself?

- I read it for the first time at the age of seventeen. Before that, I watched several film adaptations. My program was based on the film with Keira Knightley. Karenina's theme - her love story, her feelings - are humanly understandable to me. But, to be honest, Karenina is still not my favorite book. The most is a collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, especially "The Martian." I read it several times, every time I find something new.

"Started learning Japanese"

- You mentioned Japan. They love you and know you well, especially after you appeared on the ice as your favorite anime character - Sailor Moon.

- I took part in the Dreams on Ice 2016 show as a guest star. And no one expected me to appear on stage as a Japanese character. The audience reacted very violently! We came up with the number spontaneously. Many people know that I am fond of Japanese anime, and I thought: why not act as Sailor Moon? It turned out interesting and funny. In Japan, I am really recognized everywhere, wherever I appear. But I can’t say that they don’t give me a pass. On the contrary, the Japanese respect your privacy. But figure skating in their country is really much more popular than in Russia.

- Do you know Japanese?

- I'm learning. I am very interested in Japanese, and when communicating with the fans I can even insert some phrases and surprise people. It is clear that this language is very difficult to learn. And the hardest part is memorizing the Japanese alphabet.

"Gonna stay afloat"

- Recently, on your Instagram, you commented on your non-inclusion in the Russian national team for the 2021/22 season. But they said that you don't finish with sports ...

- There are different situations. You can skip a season or two, then come back and achieve results. There were many such examples in the world of figure skating. Therefore, I reacted normally to the decision of the federation and do not plan to quit training. I performed at the test skates of the Russian national team last season, but after that I did not take part in the competition due to a back injury and coronavirus. You know, I will do my best to stay afloat as long as possible. I love competition, I love this atmosphere"

I hope she does a few competitions this year and comes back next. I miss her so much.

I've actually been thinking this year might not be the best one for her to compete anyway just 'cause the competition will be insane and Eteri will have so much on her plate. It sounds like a lot of stress for very little gain (for Zhenya personally). Might as well make money instead.

Not every year will be like this one though, some skaters are bound to face struggles and it's not like a new 15 year old comes along every season, there could be more chances in the future to see her in competition, I wouldn't even rule out her making a World team at some point if her body allows it. I too really want to see Masquerade and Allegria so would love her to come back (although gala performances would be just as welcome if she doesn't compete again).

If Zhenya skips this season and comes back for 2022/2023 in good health I will be very happy! I'm not going to get my hopes up she'll get the Rostelecom spot because realistically it will go to Maia.

Averbukh said in an interview that Zhenya's role in the show is as important as that of the role of Anna Karenina. Kitty and Anna are both main roles.

Also there will be no throw jumps in the show. They want to keep Zhenya injury free. He said he approached Zhenya for the show, because he really wanted her in it and hopes it will keep her in shape and won't overload her. They are being careful. From some of the comments he made the past interviews it confirms the impression that Zhenya is not 100% healthy and the shows are a way for her to keep in shape until she is recovered.

Also he said:

- The show will run until the end of September. Will the roster change?

- Replacements are not planned, but it is possible. Everyone has their own schedule, which is formed, including Zhenya Medvedeva. Perhaps she will not be able to take part in a number of performances. Basically, 80% of all work inside and out."

"Initially there was a question about Zhenya. If Zhenya agrees to take part in the play, then she needs a partner, and I have not seen anyone except Sasha.
If Zhenya had refused, then I would have been looking for a pair that had already been rolled up. It seems to me that everything happened naturally. I do not exclude that in the absence of Zhenya, a pair of Zabiyako / Enbert will skate on the ice."

well.. I'm sad. I wanted zhenya in GP... So probably:
1. Zhenya probably is leaving the competition .. it's more likely since she isn't in the national team .. but if she would leave the competition I don't think she would had comeback for eteri
2. She needs more time to be ready for the competition ...
3. She is going try pairs

I think she needs more time to be 100% ready for competitions. I'm just happy that she is busy and skating. And I would not rule out pairs or even dance. She's a star.🌟

I would like to see her win the Olympic gold medal that eluded her last time, assuming of course that she skates better than everyone else and earns it, so I have become a bit more disappointed with each new development this season, but the Olympics aren't everything. Michael Phelps has a horde of gold medals and has struggled with depression, while Michelle Kwan never won one and seems quite happy, and ultimately, I want Evgenia to be happy, and so far, she seems happy, so I'm just rolling with it as it develops, even though my own hoped-for outcomes seem less likely than they did a few months ago.

I doubt if she switches to competitive pairs skating, but she does seem quite good at it. I hope we get to see the show! Maybe Averbukh will release a video of it after it has finished its run. I would prefer that to cobbling together a hundred different 30-second clips from fans on Instagram like we did for the Wizard of Oz show. That wasn't optimal, but at least we got to see most of her skating, and I assume we'll see it this time too, even if it's in a bunch of random 30-second clips again.
