The famous figure skater talks about her love for Japan, her "twisted" pair skating experience and her future work on TV​

Pyeongchang silver medalist Evgenia Medvedeva misses the current Olympic season, but does not leave the ice. In an interview with BUSINESS Online, the skater spoke about her plans for ice shows, her hopes to get to Beijing, her favorite Far Eastern dishes, and the passionate love of the Japanese for Russian figure skating.

"Ice Age"? Why not?​

- Evgenia, you have said more than once that you will miss the next season. What will you do?
- Yes, I do not participate in competitions this season, but, of course, I will continue to train, as I am busy in many ice projects. Of course, the volume of training is incommensurate with that of the girls who are preparing for the main starts of the Olympic Games, but I keep myself in good shape to compete with dignity in ice shows.
- This weekend the open skates of the Russian national team took place. What skaters were you watching with special interest?
- Yes, we were looking forward to the test skates of the national team, because this is a very important season. It is interesting for everyone to look at the new programs of the guys. I treat the national team as a single team, so I don't want to single out someone. One of the main starts will be a team performance, so we cheer for everyone.
- The upcoming season is Olympic. Do you feel the level of competition will be higher than in 2018?
- It will be on a slightly different level. At the previous Games, only boys came out with quadruple jumps, and at this one girls will also show them. Competition continues, but on a different plane.
- Can you describe what the figure skaters will have to go through, who will qualify for medals in China?
- Through stress that they have not experienced before. Based on my experience, I will say that it is also an insane joy, a rise in energy, inspiration. And the drive will only spur you to clean program execution. Due to pandemic restrictions, I was not able to attend the Olympics in Japan, but I plan to go to China, although again not as a participant.
- Alexey Yagudin said that you are planning to participate in the " Ice Age " . This is true?
- At the moment I can not confirm anything. This is a question for Channel One. I can say about my participation: wait and see. This project was brilliantly launched in due time by Ilya Averbukh. I respect this man and what he does, and not only in figure skating. I already had an interesting experience of participating in the "Ice Age" - as a host. But you can try something different?
- In the summer, at the Averbukh show, you performed with Alexander Enbert. How would you rate your level in pair skating?
- Indeed, thanks to the fact that Ilya Averbukh invited me to one of the main roles in the play "Anna Karenina", I had to skate in pairs. And two months before the performance, Sasha Enbert and I began to study paired elements. At first it was crooked and oblique and not very comfortable, but Alexander is an excellent teacher. Although pair skating is at the same level as 4 or even 8 years ago, it is quite high for me as a beginner boyfriend. In any case, I haven't reached it yet. However, I have already learned the paired elements in sufficient quantities for more or less worthy skating paired with Alexander. I think these skills will come in handy in other ice shows, for example, in the Sailon Moon project. Pair skating is very different from single skating in terms of inner feeling. I am grateful that there is an opportunity to try figure skating not only in the formin which she has always performed.

"The Japanese love many of our skaters"​

- The coronavirus is still there, but the world is learning to live with it. Japan has hosted the Olympics and Paralympics. Do you still plan to visit there?
- The Japanese have done a tremendous job and organized the Games at a high level. When they exhale after that, let's see under what conditions it will be possible to enter the country. Therefore I sit and wait.
- If you could go anywhere now, would you choose Japan?
- One hundred percent. First of all, Tokyo, then - Hachinohe, although he is very far away: I spent a lot of time there, I made friends, and I would very much like to see them.
- Do you remember your first impressions of Japan?
- It's messy, because I got there at the age of 13, when I was selected for the junior Grand Prix finals. It took place on the island of Fukuoka. Everything seemed strange, unusual and even frightening to me. There was a lot of food and items that I had never met in my life. And only when I visited Japan two or three more times did I become imbued.
- What's your top 3 Japanese food?
- In the first place is a melon bun from the conventional store. On the second - seared sushi with salmon and cheese sauce. The third dish is ramen in all its forms. Most of all I love ramen in small restaurants. They are called "ramen".
- Judging by Instagram, your own little Japan has appeared in your garden ...
- Yes, there is a Japanese garden near my house. The plants were bred in Japan and adapted to our winter. Of course there is bonsai. Next to it is a dry stream and a stone lantern. Everything reminds of the beloved country, its landscapes. The idea came up like this: "I want a Japanese garden." I did not understand at all how to make it, but the experts suggested the design, and they liked it, so the kindergarten appeared.- Your relevance in Japan is reflected in a large portfolio of sponsorship agreements. You can be called the only Russian figure skater working in the Japanese direction. What's the secret?
- There is no secret. If you truly love Japan, it pays the same. This is how cooperation with the national travel agency JNTO began, which contacted us and offered to cooperate in the field of popularizing Japan in Russia. We have a lot of events: so far, mostly in the online format, but it's okay - it will improve further ... And my popularity in Japan is probably due to the fact that figure skating is, in principle, popular there, much more than in Russia, and after the Olympics - just a surge of interest. The Japanese love many of our skaters, and this is mutual. Very nice people to talk to.
- The Japanese were eager to see you in ice shows, but they were canceled due to the coronavirus. Has anything changed today?
- Alas, now it is impossible to say with certainty in which ice shows I will participate. There are plans, of course, but I will only announce them when, together with the organizers, I am sure that the event will actually take place. I can say for sure about the plans to participate in the November shows of Ilya Averbukh "Anna Karenina" in Moscow, as well as in the New Year programs.
- What are your plans for the near future?
