Expecting reports on Stars, Stripes and Skates

I'm hoping someone would kindly give us reports on the "Stars, Stripes and Skates" show starting in about 2 hours.

I had read somewhere early this month that Fumie is in the cast, forgot to trace the updates, and Friday evening the IFS site said Miki is also added to the cast.

But if so, (and if what I know isn't outdated,) Miki would have to participate quite immediately after her arrival to US from Japan. I'm a bit wondering if she'd really perform.

The above post on the IFS site seems so far the only source telling the addition of Miki and Daisuke Murakami.

The organizer's site, posters and flyers don't show this said last-minute addition, but already quite a generous casting as it is:

I am volunteering at this show. Fumie is indeed skating; Miki was here this morning rehearsing and unfortunately she had to return to New York due to a (non-injury related) emergency. Please note that IFS simply posted the press release it was given; it is in no way responsible for this (now) misinformation.

Here's a real quick report:

After the group opening, Oksana -- who is very fit -- performed to "Swan Lake." She did a nice triple toe, a flying camel spin, spiral sequence and her signature "donut" spin. Lovely white costume. Annabelle Morozov, Nikolai's 7 year old daughter, did a cute number to Offenbach's "Can Can." Derrick Delmore skated his Michael Buble number, which he indicated he would retire after today. One of the highlights of the night, he hit two triple Salchows, one from a spread eagle, a triple toe and a double Axel. He had a great slide on the ice and a strong combination spin.

Navarro & Bommentre performed their free dance to Fat Boy Slim. Very entertaining. Fumie did her new short to music from "FanFan," which I believe is a French romantic comedy. The music was charming and whimsical; she wore a lovely bare pink dress. Really enjoyed her footwork sequences, which are very varied and weave in and out, as well as her combination spin (the final three moves). I wouldn't judge jumps from this show as there were on ice platforms and seats.

Adam Rippon also did his short (to Vanessa Mae's Storm and whatever it is on a G String). He fully rotated the triple Axel but fell on the landing. The rest of the program looked good, especially the footwork sequences, which were fast and exciting. Ashley Wagner performed a stylized program to Bette Midler's version of "Fever;" good speed and timing, nice number. Daisuke Murakami did his short to "Night on Bald Mountain"; after a triple loop and flip, he fell on a Lutz. Otherwise program looked good.

The Kerrs did their OD to lindy hop music and "Minnie the Moocher" (from Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy). Great lift with Sinead balanced on John's knees, legs straight up and crossed. Jeremy Abbott performed an exhibition program to "Gotta Have Faith" -- is very entertaining and musical; his combination spins and footwork looked especially strong. Oksana closed the solos with a routine to James Bond music themes.

Derrick Delmore added polish, professionalism

Just a couple of quick observations to add to nylynnr's report on yesterday's Stars, Stripes & Skates: Derrick Delmore added a lot of polish and professionalism to the show. He really commanded the ice and engaged the audience. Jeremy Abbott's number, from last season, was another highlight because of his speed and confidence.

And I definitely agree that Oksana was looking fit. She skated rather slowly but (unlike in the past), she took time to finish her elements. And she seemed genuinely happy to be there! Maybe that's because after the official show, she was staying on at Danbury Arena to tape (along with Dan Hollander and others) a new reality show called "America Loves Skating."

I couldn't stay--did anybody see that taping?

I saw the pilot. It was a lot of fun. Basically, Oksana, Dan and a New England Regionals skater, Jenna, competed in front of three judges, Susan Dees, Elaine Zayak and Tom McGuinness. Dan did two of his famous comedy numbers and "won." There was also an element (spin) challenge.

Because it was a pilot, it was scripted -- i.e., there was no viewer voting and thus no suspense as to who won the most votes. They also filmed interviews with the skaters between programs. It's my understanding the producers have several outlets interested and this pilot is being edited and sent to the interested parties.

But I think it will be tough sledding. Kristi Yamaguchi's efforts a couple of years ago, "Skating's Next Big Thing," did not attract much attention, even with host Kristi and famous judges Elvis Stojko, Rudy Galindo and Pasha Grischuk. (Kristi should go on Dan's show, now that she is famous all over again because of Dancing with the Stars :yes: )

Actually, this isn't Dan's enterprise. He supports the idea and performed on the show, but it is the brainchild of others.

I don't know....I stayed and watched it and thought it was a total bomb. As much as I love to watch skating, this show does nothing to promote it.....unless it ends up a lot better than the pilot.
