Didn't Sofia try out with Eteri years ago? For some reason I think she did, or maybe it was that other Davydov skater who ended her career due to injury, Elizaveta Beste-something? I hope Sofia develops a good relationship with Arutyunyan. She just needs to focus for two more years and she'll get her Olympic experience.

In Russian, whenever you see a combo of y and a vowel it denotes a semi-vowel of which there are 5. Some of them are missed because even Russians don't put double dots over 'e' when it is a 'yo' and just use 'e'. They just know it's not a 'ye' but a 'yo'. If the word starts with it, the yoted sound is obvious, like in You (corresponding to say Yulia). After a consonant, it softens preceding consonant instead of separating from it into a yoted sound.

Unfortunately, new gen Russians started using 'i' instead of 'y' without making a distinction when it's a semi consonant or where it is an actual 'eee' as in 'i'. So, when Ilya Malinin spells it Ilia, it is unclear from Latin script spelling what form of his name he is using. A more archaic EE-L-EE-AH or a modernized EE-L'-YAH. There is no rules how you transcribe the names in Latin. You need to see how they write it in Russian to get it right in these cases, particularly because in this generation of skaters some archaic versions of the names were acually used (like Daniil instead of Danil.) Anyway, nothing to see there.

He's the first person to successfully land that combination in competition. So his happiness about it is probably both a personal goal and having made history.

I think because Malinin was adding 3A on the end of quads I missed the significance the first quad on the end of the combo--which is something that hasn't been done at all yet. Wonder if it makes Malinin go for the first quad-quad earlier than he planned.

I hope not. Malinin already has a huge technical advantage over others. He doesn't need a 4-4 combo and I worry about his longevity. We don't want a career ending injury at all, and certainly not before the Olympics.

I think he is pretty cold-headed about it, adding and subtracting elements depending on his health. I am also pretty sure he wants the Olympic gold, heh.

I rewatched Shaidorov's 3A4T and it looked non strained. Wish him all the best of luck in his next stage. Hopefully two strong skates.

Gosh, fingers crossed for Samodelkina after the fall in the SP in Tallinn. Hope she can regroup and deliver a stronger FS.

I thought there would be an improvement after training with Raf but I can't see anything. A 3Lz-3T is difficult and very few women in the world outside of one country can do a clean one even in the GP events, but even if we add back 5 points for a successful combo, and the PCS is absurdly low just 24 so if we add 5 points to PCS to make up for the country of origin tax placed on her by the judges, then we're still at 64 which won't win much. She leaks points with those spins. I don't think it's a back issue she's always had bad spins.

Omigosh, Shaidorov in second after short in GP China! I know everything will change after free, but fingers crossed for him to stay on the podium.

And, a fantastic result! Shaidorov skated a beautiful free to win the free skate and stay on the podium with a silver medal. Unfortunately, thanks to the previous stage he will not be able to qualify for the final, but fingers crossed for him to continue to skate as strongly for the rest of the season.

He just gets too happy in succeeding, and then misses out a little on the choreo (or was it steps) through lack of concentration. But that KnC was priceless, such happy faces! Maybe no final, but he certainly showed his worth today!

They didn't dissapoint in judging department by giving him a fall for a small stumble on a choreo sequence. It was otherwise a visually clean, lovely skate.

Finished watching now. Wow, hit him with a time violation at the end as he was sliding ever so slightly.

Only one of two who had a clean performance but really held him back on program components. He should be ahead of Kagiyama slightly and then with a big gap over 4th to 6th.

For that opening combo there were three +1's. A couple of zeros for the triple axels. Really harsh on him.

He was so pleased just to be here! So was I, just to see him. And, I believe the crowd thought so too. He's improved so much on the non-jump part thet I almost forgot that he is improving on the jump part too - new things. Always good.
