Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

I was in Montréal this week and I had the chance to meet Gabriella and Guillaume at the Gadbois Sport Center and attend some training sessions. I obviously saw several parts of their new programs but I am sure you will understand that I don’t feel like using this forum to broadcast all kinds of details related to P/C short and free dances. That would not be honest and fair at all. As you probably know, Gabriella and Guillaume will participate to the 2016 Figure Skating Masters, scheduled from October 6th to 8th, in Villard-de-Lans and will perform both SD and FD for the very first time.

Now, this being said, I can share some information with you.

About the Short Dance.
Gabriella and Guillaume decided to go for jazzy blues and swing. I think their swing sequence is really exciting and great. Swing music is a style of jazz that originated in the United States in the late 20s and became one of the most popular and successful kinds of musical in the country during the 1930s. Swing is fundamentally orchestral. Its dynamic style and spectacular sense of fun matches perfectly with Gabriella and Guillaume’s amazing extensions and fast body moves on the ice. Even during a rehearsal, they are stunning to watch, believe me! Still about swing, one should never forget that its spectacular sense of fun is closely identified with the crazy spirit of the 1920s and we can rely on Gabriella and Guillaume to give free rein to their craziness! Now, there’s a drawback… Swing is extremely demanding in terms of physical efforts and non-stop moves while Hip Hop is a musical style cadenced by typical short breaks. Don’t get me wrong! I am not saying Hip Hop is easy to dance but typical Swing is based on an endless fast tempo. That’s a fact.

About the Free Dance.
For obvious reasons, I don’t want to go into details but it’s for sure different and quite challenging compared to their previous FD. Now, fluidity, effortless speed, class, feelings, creativity, body language and artistic expression will be among their FD strengths.

Thankyou alain06fr.Do you mean they already have these things or that they need to work on them because it's so challenging? So excited to see them again.

That's fantastic news about their SP! I think blues/swing will fit them more than a hip hop SD, especially with their strengths than Gabriella's height and then have nice long lines.

@alain06fr, so nice to hear some news, they are quite secretive and I like that about them so you're absolutely right not too share too much. Like Brushvalley, I'm curious about what you meant about the FD. Above all, even if it's different, did you like it ? Do you think it has the potential to create magic or stun us and become the FD to beat once again ?

Thanks alain06fr! Their programs sound promising and exciting to watch. I can't wait for the first debut of the programs.

Dear brushalley,

They already have these things. They also worked on different kinds of lifts. I think their twizzles are really great and sequenced at the right moment. The main challenge is to experiment new music styles and new choreographies while being focused on conveying emotions and moods. They will manage to be successful once again because they are so talented skaters and dancers in addition of being hard workers, plus they are guided by a team of great coaches.

Dear cocotaffy,

Their new FD seems to me quite strong and yes, it has the potential to create magic, clearly even if they decided to try something more difficult and more "complex" (it's hard to find the right word to be honest). It's so amazing to see how they concentrate on all little technical and choreography details. They are picky! Definitely! Small sequences are tested many times with different variations to find the best one. Really amazing to watch...

I was already very eager for the season to start but now, alain06fr, "vous nous avez mis l'eau a la bouche" like we say in French (sorry didn't find the equivalent in english). Will you be at the Masters ? And I have a last question if you can answer. Their main critics on forums always brought up the fact they do the same spins since junior. You mentioned they working on new lifts, did they change their spins too ? Promise I won't bug you more ;)
