alain06fr, I want to thank you for your effort and dedication you put into bringing Gabriella and Guillaume closer to the people. It is good to hear that they are ready and 'hungry' for competition, to show their new material. As for your words I bolded, my opinion in relation to Gabriella/Guillaume is that they make everything they use 'not typical' - despite their young age, what I very appreciate is their clear vision and unique take on Ice Dance they present in their every program, regardless of scores, levels and public sympathy towards the programs. I suspect that SD this season will be nothing but 'typical' Latin, but their version of it, spin put with the input of Christopher Dean. I'm very much looking forward to see their debut at Finlandia Trophy.

You’re right, I try somehow to bring Gabriella and Guillaume closer to the people because I think their personalities are among the decisive factors in their success.

Both are shy, especially Guillaume. Both are modest. I would even say "very modest". I will never forget this moment I spent with them in Montréal in August 2015. Though being only 20 years old, they were already the defending European and World champions. They welcomed me warmly and quietly. They started to thank me for coming to Gadbois, for supporting them, etc. At some point, I thought “Euh… they thank me. congratulate me... Shouldn't it be the other way around?”. Since 2015, they stayed the same. They remained quiet and humble.

There are other interesting sides of their personalities. Both share a contemporary and modern vision of ice dance. For example, step by step, they deconstruct the stereotype that only women should be the focus of the dance. Step by step, they get off the beaten track of typical ice dance clichés. These ideas are catching on in the ice dance world and they are now inspiration to other skaters.

They strongly believe ice dance succeed through freedom. Remember this famous post from Guillaume after the 2017 Europeans and the “unfriendly” questions from this journalist during the FD press conference: “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so ABSOLUTELY FREE (capital letters in the original post) that your existence is an act of rebellion”. This sentence summarizes perfectly Gabriella and Guillaume’s specific approach to ice dance. They are definitely not interested in mimics. They want to be themselves, share their own feelings and their own emotions with the audience. To reach that goal. they need to act as if they were almost free in a codified world. I am sure the great success of Stillness-Oddudua (Free dance) with the public in Ostrava and moreover in Helsinki strengthened this deeply anchored conviction.

thank you alain06fr for your response

I think that the easiest way is to assume/impose 'lack of creativity/versatility', ' laziness/leniency' on the team, based on people's personal tastes and expectations. Some time ago, I was too very one-side oriented over Ice Dance and I know better now - there is always some good quality/feature, interest worth to put into every team, even not top tier ones. With relatively shy team as Gabriella/Guillaume are, I think it is for the best to do what you're doing - bring them close to all as people, not only as ice dancers. I think it helps to understand where are they coming from with their approach, style, way of expression. As a result - it also helps to get more grasp and understanding on what they are presenting on ice in terms of material.

I feel like this very season could be for Gabriella/Guillaume the season of even stronger/better confirmation/'channelling' their Ice Dance approach, philosophy of freedom - the experience of last 3 seasons surely gave them the right material for thoughts, this much needed 'learning curve' and built up their conviction and confidence in what they pursued. I hope that both programs this season will pose a good, exciting challenge for them and boost their creativity more and more as the season will progress.

I have never been so anxious to discover their programs:drama: (the next weekend, it is Christmas for me:cheer2:). I really hope that their programs will be better received than last year (the first comments after the masters were:palmf: ...) even though I have some fears (the quality of the videos, an inevitable comparison )
They could give us a gift by unveiling their music before next Friday:)

I hope you'll have a great time at the Masters next week, maya1985! :)

I think that Gaby and Guillaume have definitely learned their lesson from last year and have chosen their programs for this season wisely. We'll see how the FFSG handles the camerawork (maybe issuing a no cameras allowed in the rink policy could help?). I'm bracing myself for the comparisons though, it's about to go down.

Yes me too, it won't be a fun season on that front. Anyway, hope you have a nice time Maya. I can't believe it's actually next week already. We won't have many top teams' programs missing after that, just C/L, S/S and C/B I believe, plus C/L will skate with P/C in 2 weeks. From what I'm seeing so far, Latin SD is definitely not my favorite rhythm. Gaby and Guillaume were right to say it's not the best dance to adapt to the ice, at least not in a way to do it justice.

Now that I've seen V/M's SD, I say the door is wide open for P/C to win the SD portion of the event as well as the gold. Especially if they stay true to their style and bring us a non cheap, cliche version of Latin.

Yup, I share the same sentiments. I wasn't too impressed by their FD either, and the SD didn't give me a good impression at all. I'm not going to go into detail in the P/C thread (or anywhere else for that matter, because I'd get crucified by crazed V/M fans). But I agree, if P/C come out with an improved SD and a FD that's up to the standard of the previous seasons, the door is wide open for them to bring it home.

I wish that PC show fresh, different and stylish latin. VM Sd seems to be very strong program but for me stylistically it is quite disappointing. They didn't prepared nothing we would seen from them. It's very similar to chin chin, hip hip. As for my taste a bit stereotypical latin a la disco party from seventies. Not impressed.

Again, without much commentary on Virtue and Moir, P and C can do this: that metaphorical door that commentators love is wide open.

Right now we need our own special spy alain06 to tell us if P/C are going to keep true to their SD approach or are gonna try to match V/M's antics.

I'm putting my hopes into Christopher Dean on this one - he's a guarantee that whatever their music choice is, the choreography will at least go with the music choice (which is so desperately missing in V/M's SD, where the choreo isn't doing anything interesting with the music and they're just trying to slap Latin ballroom theatrics onto rock music).

I think the thing to remember about G and G's sd programme last year is that there really wan't anything wrong with it. The issue was the mistakes made- on twizzles, the partial step, and also the midline no-touching step sequence, on which they lost levels and then GOE, and then had a bit chipped off their PCS for good measure. I always think that there is a score for the skate and an underlying score for the skaters. The underlying score for G and G is as high as anyone else's, even for the short dance. To me, although I understand why for viewers and fan, the issues regarding music choice and choreo are really important; in terms of the scoring their impact isn't that great: it's the levels, the GOE and the pcs in that order of importance, and between the two top teams the PCS difference will only be a decisive factor if all the levels are there for both teams and there are no mistakes in terms of execution (That's not to say that I agree with it)

That said, I'm hoping for a kind of warm and open-hearted latin dance that feels about the spirit of the occasion.

Me, a spy?????
Hummm.... What can I say.... Let me see...
OK, they're dancing on rumba and samba rhythms but not on a latin samba or rumba music (I mean they're not dancing on typical ballroom samba and rumba musics).

P/C SD is definitely a modern approach of samba and rumba rhythms (as I mentioned in my previous post, Gabriella and Guillaume want to promote their contemporary / modern vision of ice dance. through both SD and FD. I insist on "both SD and FD").

Just to give one example (not samba nor rumba related), I think I could mention their gala program of the 2016 Worlds...

I hope so. I'm very disappointed with V/M SD. It's over the top and too flashy. I hope P/C will show something more subtle and sensual.

Me, a spy?????
A lovely and non threatening spy of course  Thanks for the info. So they haven't gone down the authentic road like with their Paso Doble. Interesting. As long as it's not over the top flashy but just the right amount of edginess, I'm in. Their 2016 World Ex was definitely fresh and modern and is my fav Ex along with their Take me to Church one.
