Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

I can't stop watching this SD. I will never like the music, but my god, what are these two good!! This program is really getting very close to the magic of the FD. For me there is a humongous difference with the former performances, in that now, there is no need anymore to fake any joy, they feel comfortable, at ease, they OWN this dance, it's becoming really their thing and they are both starting to be able to show themselves through the dance. I don't know how to express myself correctly: they become more genuine. The 'realness', the honesty, the simplicity of 'this is just who we are' is what makes them so special and makes everything magical. To see that coming through in such a technical performance where the clean skate HAS to come first, is such a wonderful wonderful thing.
I'm in love with the shape of both of them.

I have a technical question: I am trying to get more knowledgeable about the technical stuff and scoring, and came across a US video that explains the IJS. They said that out of the 9 judges, a computer picks randomly 2 and removes those, and out of the remaining 7 the highest and lowest are removed and the 5 remaining are averaged.
Nowhere in anything here have I seen any mention of that random removal of 2 judges, and I am 99% sure that at least in ID that is not happening. Calculation discussions just don't make sense anymore because that random thing throws everything off. I would personally also object to such a system, as there is nothing remotely fair to such a weird thing. The highest and lowest scores could be removed, which would make the total amount more of a lottery than a fair judgement, and it would incite judges to give extreme scores to make sure that they are putting more weight in if they are not removed.
Can someone explain what this is about and why that video gives such weird information in an otherwise correct explanation of IJS?

Only the lowest and highest marks are discarded.

yes Cocotaffy, news about today's practice: "Great practice this afternoon"
And moreover "They are in excellent mood"

To sum up, serene and fully focused on Moonlight Sonata free dance. :)

Ah, I forgot, they enjoyed the Junior ice dance competition inside the hall.

Good news:) (I had no doubts but it's always better with a confirmation:laugh:)
I look forward to seeing again their moonlight sonata ...it's so beautiful:luv17:. The time will stop a few minutes tomorrow.
I wish them the best:clapper:

Am I one of the crazy ones who likes to watch the warm-up groups ? I thinks it's interesting to see how couples interact with one another. One thing which stroke me is and was very visible in this competition is most couples spread for the first minute or so skating on their own all over the rink, but for Gaby and Guillaume who immediately zoom out hand in hand at such a synchronised pace covering so much ice in just couple of strides. So when people say they don't have as much chemistry or connection or speed or whatever I find watching warm-up and practice videos closely actually very telling. They're nearly constantly together, it's quite endearing.
On another note, I'm getting weary of those politics and corruption talks as if Gaby and Guillaume cannot win on their own merits. Alain I hope you'll have an occasion to either go to Gadbois or talk to them at a competition before the Olympics and tell them again how high we think of them and how in awe we are of their work. All those cheaters comments on twitter and instagram mean nothing compared the 26 millions people on facebook touched by their free dance this year.

I love watching the warm up before the competition. The way they create speed and they cover ice is always so beautiful to watch !

It's heartbreaking, and disgusting:disagree: ... On twitter, some reactions are:hopelessness: and it's getting worse: they talk about scandal, corruption, Gailhaguet (he at least he is not sitting with the judges to judge the competition) ...
Gabriella and Guillaume are in the lead because they deserve it.
These idiotic reactions may continue until the Olympics: respect has been forgotten by some

To be honest, I think the Canadian media is stirring a lot of this up. I saw an interview the other day which included allegations of V/M being robbed in 2014, and also statements of there being a judging scandal, "after a nasty judging controversy alleging the result was predetermined they got silver", before the result for D/W was decided in the introduction by the Canadian commentators. If the narrative being put out there is that V/M are going to get the gold in 2018 they were denied in 2014, it's not surprising these sort of silly twitter comments about corruption and scandal are going out on twitter.

It all just has to be ignored. The only thing that matters is the skating......

Canadian media and the Canadian fed would do better to shut their mouth, especially when it comes to scandals, judges and Gailhaguet. Some people know what I mean exactly here but I will come to that point once the GPF free dance will be over.

So far, what matters is the free dance competition

And I think we are going to see a beautiful free skate tomorrow from Gabby and Guillaume!

It's reflecting very badly on Canadian skating fans.

Yes. I just randomly caught a headline from CBC that's like: V/M have the edge heading into GPF. Anyone who paid attention to this years GP would know that's a misleading statement and would probably lead to fan outcry if it doesn't turn out that way.

That is PJ Kwong's article introducing what to watch for in the GPF and her picks for the final. I thought it was optimistic on her part, most fans who followed the season so far know P/C are winning the GPF. The SD was maybe a surprise but it was clear the judges were moving P/C closer to V/M´s WR score so not a shock really.

FWIW her picks aren't looking great at this stage as she had Uno winning mens, Osmond ladies, Sui/Han pairs and V/M dance.

Agreed. There is still the FD on saturday, and I'm sure they'll keep the focus in. Today just showed one thing that is excellent to know for BOTH teams, and also for the Shibs : you skate clean, you win. You can't just hope to take it on PCS anymore. This is almost the Ice Dance judging dream.
The gap is very small, but they can definitely do it. Well I hope they will.

What is so impressive for me is that despite the fact that they spent much of their effort this year on improving their short dance performance that the final dance did not suffer at all. In fact, their final dance performance also got better. Typically, I would imagine that focusing on the short dance would have sacrificed the final dance. They did all of that in a span of less than six months since the World championships in late March! I have never seen figure skaters whose improvements are significant and evident from one competition to another. I will be sending them good thoughts for tomorrow's competition!
