Golden West 2007

Good to hear that Caroline's doing well, and seems to have a 3/3!!
Does anyone know though if she's changed her technique for those lutz/flip jumps?

Somebody wrote to say that Rhohene Ward landed a quad at this event...haven't read any reports yet though of his performance.

Rhohene landed a beautiful quad/triple in his free skate. He didn't have the best short program, but had a wonderful free skate ( though looked as though he tired near the end).

I think he was like 9th after the short, came in 2nd in the free skate and ended up 4th over all I believe.

I'm going from memory, so sorry if I am not completely accurate.

What worries me is that Caro must not have scored very high (relatively speaking) either on the PCS or the GOE's, so despite her 3/3, her score of 63 wold put her in 5th at the last WC. Hopefully it's just a matter of her concentrating hard on the 3/3, so she isn't very comfortable or polished with her two brand new programs yet. Go Caro!

I don't know why you would be comparing her PCS and GOE to the top ladies at 2007 Worlds, since Caroline won't be eligible to compete at Worlds THIS YEAR. She has plenty of time and opportunities to polish her skating this year in the GP and again at JW. The current top ladies had better work on THEIR skating because it's going to be a whole new ballgame once Caro and Mirai are age-eligible for Worlds.

Someone on FSU reported that Rohene Ward also landed a triple axel in his FS, along with the quad toe combo (only the third time in his career that he has landed both jumps in the same program, I believe).

This was the second time he skated to his new "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" free skate (first time was at Liberty in July and it's on youtube) and it sounds like it was an improved performance. What did you think of his program and choreography, sk8ingjudge?

Thanks for the info, Sk8ingjudge, and welcome to the forum. I hope you like it here! Post often, post long! :agree:

I know, but she will compete against them on the GP circuit this year. I quoted scores from WC because those are the most recent and therefore most relevant --
although of course you never know what new tricks the top ladies are going to pull out come the new season: 3A, 4S, level 4 step seq, and who knows what else!
Also, it was a rare treat because the top 4 ladies all had clean skates in the SP. If Caro can top those scores then she's in good shape.

One might not consider the ISU judging system self-consistent enough to have the last WC scores to be predictive of what anyone will get in the upcoming GP events, but then I don't think last year's GP scores will be any more predictive! ;) Self-consistency is a whole other argument. :p

I, for one, do nottake the comparison of scores seriusly from not only year to year but from one competition to another.

Skaters may fall in comp and not in another. They may be under the weather in one comp and not in the other. There are so many cultures in judging. So many factors to consider from comp to comp and from year to year. Then there is the imrovements from comp to comp and from year to year to factor in. Best way to deal with that is take at least the last 5 major competition scores and average them out. (Nationals in any country is not a major competition nor is Invitationals, imo.)

The official results are up:
http://www.allyearfsc.com/events/2007-GW/GW2007Results/index.htm

Caro got 106.2 in the LP, giving a total of 169.3 . She probably lost about 10 points for the fall on the 3F (planned 3F/3T) in the TES, and probably about 5 points in the PCS.

Based on these scores, I think she will do well enough on the GP's to end up in the GP Final. But she will have to really up her PCS in order to secure a medal there. Her PCS of 50.8 is about 10 points lower than what the top ladies got at the last WC (she's skating about the level of how well Joannie Rochette did, who was 5th in LP). In particular, I think she needs to increase her speed and deepen the edges to have any hope of equaling Mao & Yu-na's feat of winning the GPF on their first try.

She's still got 3 months left (before GPF) to really get into these two new programs of hers. I'm looking forward to seeing them on TV -- next month!

I contend Rohene Ward will win the US Nationals if he skates clean. If he doesn't skate clean, I guarantee you will remember him more than the winner.

Mao was 15 when she won the GPF, and Yu-Na was 16. If Caroline won the GPF at 14, that would be a HUGE accomplishment.

There's no need to rush. I believe the most important thing for her this year is the up technical difficulties. Mastering 3+3 is key for her success in the future. She is on track. She may also need a 3S in jumps.

I don't believe she's on par with Yu-Na, Kim, Ando or even Kimmie yet. She is still too young.

This is a wonderful year of opportunity for both Mirai and Caroline. They both have that wonderful innocence of youth and don't yet fully realize the tremendous pressure that will eventually become a regular part of their lives. Hopefully this year of growth and new experience will help them learn how to handle the pressure that they will begin to understand comes with the territory. I hope they both have an exciting season full of wonder and awe ... regardless of marks or placements. Provided they stay healthy, both young women are looking like golden lights shining toward 2010. There's still time for them to just be kids this year.

I wish people would not use the name 'Caro' if it doesn't mean Kostner. I don't know if friends of Caroline Zhang actually call her Caro. If they do and it is legitimately a nick-name, then please say Caro Z.

Yeah, I also found it confusing, but then I took a look at the context and it dawned on me...

Do Plushenko and Yagudin really get called Plushy and Yags by their friends? Those seem to be pretty legitimate nicknames on skating forums, even if no one really calls them that to their faces.

I don't know anyone who calls Alexei "Yags" to his face, or in reference about him to his friends. As far as Plushenko goes, people that work with him and are his friends do - or at least in the past - call him "Plushy" but they pronounce it "Plooshy" and will rapidly correct you if you try and call him "Pluh'-shee".

The first time I heard the nickname "Yags" was from someone who posted that he signed an autograph that way at 1996 Europeans (where he was the replacement Alexei, competing as an alternate for the then-more-famous Urmanov). Of course, it's possible that she just interpreted his handwriting that way.

Yes it's true about Plush and Yags nicknames but those names identify each distinctly from others. Caro, there would be two of them and last initial would be in order.

ITA. Among online skating fans 'Caro' is already taken and is confusing if applied to another skater. Zhang fans need to come up with something else (or establish something new for Kostner first, maybe Forza?).

For Zhang:

Shazhang!

Cazhang? Cazho? (no, too close to Cujo, actually I like Cujo as a nickname but it could be taken the wrong way I guess)

Zhangy? Zhangee?

Ms Bo-zhangles?

Zhang a-lang a-ding-dong?

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Shazhang! Our heroine changes from mild-mannered teenager to SuperSpinner, teaming up with Futuregirl to fight the neverending battle for truth, justice and the American way. ("Mirai" = "future" in Japanese.)
