Don't feel sorry for the Thoroughbreds who race. They are given the best of care. Feel sorry for the NYC carriage horse who works all day in 90+ weather, then has to walk back to his stable. Car/carriage horse accidents have been on the upswing. In one case a carriage horse was between two buses, when a bus ran right on top of the horse. Another horse walking the strets developed severe leg pain and died. His body was dumped in Central park like a piece of trash.
And don't forget the dumb backyard breeders who just HAVE to breed animals who have no business being bred. They end up at slaughter. here is a sampling from a recent auction, where the meat buyers make bids:
