Gracie Gold

I enjoyed this interview - I think this is the longest video I've seen of her yet. We get to know her personality, her mindset and insight as to her struggles last season. (And I could care less about her friendship w/Taylor Swift but I guess people are interested in hearing about that, lol).

So glad Dave asked her about the hitting the boards issue and that she is working on it - since that is discussed so much on GS.

Her relationship with Frank is odd though, is he going senile or does he try to boost her confidence when he tells her she already hit her 3A?

Have to admit i asked the same thing. I am not sure the way she described it as a good thing. I also don't know if it is all that confidence boosting. More of a reminder you have not, and that you coach is not paying that much attention.

Id like to hear some opinions from skaters who skated with him if he did stuff like this.

I don't know if I'd be so quick to assume from this interview he's going senile but something else that didn't impress me was when she was talking about how he never knew she could do a Rippon lutz. She actually sounded like she legitimately thought it was humorous that despite the fact that she had been doing at least a few a week in front of him at practice the whole time she's been training with him, he had no idea she could do them. I didn't think it was humorous, myself, but actually kind of sad. I don't think it's a sign he's senile necessarily though- it could just as likely be that he is kind of just set in his ways after so many years of coaching and pretty much only focuses on what HE thinks it's important to focus on, even though sometimes mistakes will be made or things will be overlooked that way.

That could also be vision based. I could see someone not really being able to tell which blond young lady is which from across the rink. Heck even i would probably have to use clothing as a clue from across the rink. If his vision is not perfect, he may have to really focus on the skater he is looking at to know who he is seeing. It is one thing to see someone skate away from you, do a jump and come back, it is another notice them out on the rink randomly. He may just not pay much attention to the free skate that is going on around and just focus on who he is coaching directly.

I will say if nothing else Gracie does appear to have genuine fondness and warmth for Frank. I may not get encouraged by some of Frank's comments, but it appears to work for Gracie. I am glad she seems happy with him and enjoys his quirks.

Perhaps he's not going senile (I certainly hope not) but it seems that Gracie has some challenges reading Frank and I'm not sure that makes for a good coach/pupil relationship. Although it was nice to see she said he's mellowed with age.

She does seem to like working with Lori though and that things gel quickly with her, so that's a good thing.

I'd be curious to hear Denis Ten or Daisuke Murakami's thoughts on working with Frank, too.

Nice to hear she's focused on that Worlds gold! I'm hoping that focus will get her through the season without any major disasters (JO notwithstanding). She seems very mature and thoughtful, and she's clearly reflecting on some of the things that have caused her to struggle in this past.

Enjoyable interview. She is the girl who can have it all... good positive personality, charisma, world class jumps, talk the talk... and can clearly do the walk the walk DURING PRACTICE!! now just do it when it matters the most.

I wonder if TSL's advice for Adam can apply to her too. Realistic steps one at a time, manage pressure and expectations better, as it seems the only thing holding them back. Nice of her to attribute her Gold lutz to Rippon Lutz. Lol the fangirly scream for taylor swift's tweet. Glad she address the board issue. Happened too many times for comfort.

Best of Luck Gracie!

watched Gracie's interview, first of all, this girl is real. but her accent has changed soooo much.
worried about her training, it seems like her coach does not know that she can do a "rippon" lutz (which every coach should know very well their student's full ability). and her 3A training is almost just like how she feels it. She cannot do a good skid to get that 3A, but from this talk, it seems that FC didnot offer any kinda training/drills that will help her to get that skid, it just seems that she just tried it once for twice a week.
Also, about her stiff landing, actually Gracie has honestly spoken out all her issues in this interview. that's why she is real. but I didnot get a feeling that she has a concrete solution to those problems. such as a soft smooth jump landing, if only tell you that "landing is the most important thing", of course it is, it still wont change the landing.

It was a real and down-to-earth interview, but kinda left me unsettled.

Also hitting board, Gracie explained very well why she always hit the board. so the only solution for her is to cut her cross-over shorter. is it. while for Gracie,as a student this is what she can only do. but maybe coach should think about change the entry routine a bit, instead of losing her cross-over distance and speed.

also I kinda like how Gracie described her feelings toward all her programs. including the gershwin SP. I think this girl definitely has a solid grasp of music, although perhaps not the most artistic type.

^ I completely agree with you on everything.

I would suggest for Gracie to work on her knee bend for those landings. Bend those knees!!

Grace Elizabeth Gold, born August 17, 1995, known as Gracie Gold, is an American figure skater.

Gracie Gold pronounces her name (video by sabinfire)

Biography & Skating style:

Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Gracie picked up the skating boots at the age of eight, when she began training with Amy Vorhaben and Max Liu before switching to work with Alexia Griffin. Over the years she was coached by the likes of Susan Liss, Toni Hickey and until August 2013 Alex Ourashiev. After being trained by Marina Zueva and Oleg Epstein for a short time, Gold started working with a new permanent coach, Frank Carroll, who already helped Michelle Kwan to four World Championships and a silver medal at the Olympics in Nagano.

Gracie who first competed in pairs with Sean Hickey, is capable of landing all triples, except the Axel. Said element, however, seems to be back on schedule, after already being practiced and landed in 2011, back then however, with the help of a pole harness.
Throughout the years, Gracie impressed with her speed, the positive attitude and graceful spins, but also her huge heart. The Bronze medalist of Sochi in the team event, won the US National title in 2014 with a new Short Program record of 72.12 and combined total of 211.69, something no other US lady had ever done before.

Besides also winning the Grand Prix at NHK later that year and scoring good results at Worlds, Gold has to face a lot of negativity and pressure in her home country, where only the gold medal seems to count. Gracie, however, also shines when she doesn't win, her gracious attitude on and off the ice is a real gift to the Figure Skating Community and surely a great motivation to all the kids out there.

New interview from Frank Carroll

This part really spoke to me
Physically, she has no limits. She has a beautiful body and she works hard. The biggest problem she has is believing in herself. She needs to feel mentally as prepared as she is physically. I have tried my best. The rest is up to her.

Gracie, believe in yourself! :cheer2:
gee I need to say this to Soyoun as well

I pegged her for Gold on the TSL's fantasy league game. Fingers crossed!

Sunny_stars, thanks so much for the link - great interview! I seem to remember that Tcherkasskaia worked with young Sasha Cohen too.

Good luck Gracie for your sp. We believe in you!
