Grammar question

MM, why aren't you in school?
You mean with the rest of the twelve year olds?

The trouble, for me, is that i don't see things on screen like i do on paper.
I have a hard time seeing mistakes when I type in the diagogue box. But then after it appears on the board, for some reason they jump out at me. (That's why almost all of my posts say "editied" down at the bottom, LOL.)

I do the same thing, Mathman! I am frequently guilty of typos, so I like to quickly read my posts to make sure they're 'clean'. Sure enough, any mistake stands out to my eyes as if it were written in neon.

There's a difference between a few typos and just 'giving up' and deciding to just ramble on without any relief for the reader...

I miss Rgirl... she was always so fun.

Don't all ya all knows that thats bees the reasons that cha all have me post'n heres? So ya all cans feel good 'bout yer posts. No matters how bad some of ya all's posts be, yous can always be think'n, "well at least it is not as bad as SeaniBu." ;)

I am sure most of you have read something like this -

Subject: If You Can Read This
fi yuo cna raed tihs, yuo hvae a sgtrane mnid, too.
Cna yuo raed tihs? Olny 55 plepoe tuo fo 100 anc.

Funny how many "words" that are not underlined as being miss spelled in the above. I don't believe spell check even knows what to do with them they are spelled so poorly.

Sean I have seen that, and while I can read it, that doesn't mean I want to read everything that way ;)

So you don't like reading my posts? j/k :agree:

That is almost a rule of thumb. In "Art school" and in printing companies we / I was told to Always print a draft, for mistakes will suddenly appear.

Here's another pet peeve -- when people say "most qualified" instead of "best qualified."

Well qualified, better qualified, best qualified (not qualified, more qualified, most qualified).

I did, however, finally figure out a way to get around that very useful phrase, "that's a whole 'nother thing." ("Nother?"). That's another thing altogether.

AND ANOTHER THING... Split infinitives. No one even knows what that means any more, much less care whether they do it.

"To boldly go"

"Boldly to go"

PS. Speaking of "to boldly go," I do credit Star Trek with teaching kids to pronounce "data" correctly (long "a" as in "rate"). For some odd reason past generations of computer scientists started mispronouncing this word as "datta," with a short "a". Once computers got big, we all thought, well, computer scientists are smarter than we (not "us"), so they must know how to pronounce this word, and more and more people started to go along.

The war was almost lost when Captain Picard hove into view with his robot guy "Data," correctly pronounced. I guess in the 25th century there was a big language reform movement to restore things to right.

Alas, we could beat the computer scientists but we couldn't beat the army. In World War II American G.I.s ate "field rations." Since they didn't know how to pronounce it (long "a") they garbled it into "ra-a-shuns" (short "a"). That pronounciation stuck, since no one except the army uses this word much. Oh, the humanity!

Oddly enough MM, I did always pronounce that correctly - one of the few to be franc and humble - for Mom's 2nd job in Boulder was working at NeoData. And I liked how when Data was introduce for the first time on ST correcting - was irt Will?? - and speaking his name over again as if to make a point to the character that was slightly modeled after Kirk and corrected all of the years of "bastardization."

OT, MM I can't believe you didn't pick up on my comments about MK in the "Bratz" thread.

If you mean about how smokin' she looks in her black warmup outfit, no comment was necessary. Everyone knows that, including Michelle!

Have you ever had a chance to go to one of Michelle's practice sessions at an event? Her practices are performances. She knows that every eye is on her, and she doesn't disappoint!
