Grand Prix Speculation 2015-2016

My guess for the top 3 men:

Fernandez gets to choose first, so he'll take TEB (close to Spain and he wanted it last year but didn't get it) and SA (close to Toronto, he's won SC already and Worlds 2016 are in Boston)

Hanyu takes NHK (no option here) and I'm guessing SC (close to Toronto and if Chan'll be there it's good practise for him like in 2013)

Ten is left with CoC (which I think he wants) and CoR (because nobody wants it unless you are a Russian).

CoR might actually be desirable, since the Russian men aren't much of a threat....

We don't know where SA is going to be held yet. If it's at altitude, maybe it won't be desirable to the first pickers.

Seeds really mean very little from one year to the next. Cause who was good this year may not be good next year. You also have to wonder if all of a sudden being listed as a seeded skater puts too much pressure on some skaters. I mean it's easier to go into an event with no one thinking you can medal then everyone expecting you to medal. Just look at the skaters who have finished well at worlds one year but not been able to do well in the GP the next year. Just recently there have been Amodio, Brazina, Rippon, Contesti and Reynolds. In ladies there have been Murakami, Phaneuf, Lepisto and So Youn and Edmunds from last year. So you have to wonder how much the skater really likes being seeded for next year! Especially in the ladies when you know there are at least 3 or 4 RUS ladies at home who can medal at any GP event.
I mean it was nice for Nguyen and Ge to finish well this year and place in the top 6 and thus be seeded for next year. But the question for me is, is this too much pressure for them so soon. Will the pressure now be on Ge to get a Quad for next year. And if so what will that do to his overall skating. Pressure is already on Brown to add a Quad.

Not everyone melts under pressure and expectations. If anything, that's a mark of a good competitor is someone who CAN handle that role. Pressure and expectations come with the territory and honestly the men, like us, are human, so I don't expect they will always handle it perfectly, but I would argue that Yuzuru and Javier have done a decent job, which gives me faith that Nam will be fine too (Orser strength, IMO, is helping his students learn to deal with this pressure....it's not always successful, but he did it with Yuna and now with Yuzuru and Javier).

As for Jason and the quad, I pretty much expect that he will struggle initially with it. But again, it's not so much whether he will avoid struggles and pressure, it's how he handles it. His career thus far has shown that he CAN handle growing and mounting pressure, if this season is any indication.

But, in any case, how is what you're saying has relevance in terms of who will get GP assignments this year (or where they will end up)? ;)

Polina and So Youn weren't top 6 last year---they were 8th and 9th. They became seeds because three skaters in the top 6 retired or took the year off. And I doubt being seeded had anything to do with the pressure of expectations for them---it was more that for both it was their first year in the Grand Prix. Even JGPF/JW Champions like Radionova and Sotnikova didn't win their first GP events.

Nam has already had a GP season under his belt, and he medaled at SA in his first event; I don't see why being seeded should make any difference other than boosting his confidence. Ge had his first GP season last year; he finished 5th and 4th in his two events, which is rather impressive considering that he is a relative unknown to ISU judges (most of his competitions have been in B events). All of the seeded ladies have had at least one season in the GP and all have medaled at least once. What is an advantage to seeded status is that there is one less power competitor stacked against you!

As far as adding a quad---neither Brown nor Ge needed a quad to finish top 6 at Worlds. Brown probably will work on including a quad in his programs in the GP. Ge---probably not. I believe Ge's PCS scores will go up because of his success at Worlds and the improvements in his skating.

Sorry guess I mentioned a couple names in there of some favs and did not show them in a good light. I will remove the post!

I see you did it, but no need. You are entitled to your opinion, I was just being Mrs. Obvious.

Can we try to speculate the locations for some of the GP events?

Well CoC is always Shanghai or Beijing if anything, Skate Canada will be in Lethbridge, Alberta, TEB will likely be in Paris again (I think last year was an exception due to renovations or something), CoR will mostly likely be Moscow again. Skate America I don't know, maybe Lake Placid? It's been a while. I have a feeling that NHK may go to Nagano this year because it's also been a while. Location really only matters in Canada or US I guess, Japan and France are small, even if they hold it on the other side of the country, it's like a day trip.

I'm kinda hoping that Skate America will be held in the DC area. Or Northern VA. Though I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. The Verizon Center in DC as of now doesn't have anything in that date area, however I don't think the Wizards (Basketball) or Capitols (Hockey) schedule has been finalized yet.....sigh....

The Dunkin' Doughnuts Center might be good. It was a great location when I went to see Stars on Ice last year (One of the best days of my life by the way). Especially since there's a hotel SUPER close to it...But hmmmm I don't know.

The Verizon Center (called MCI Center) hosted Worlds back in 2003. Baltimore hosted Nationals in 1989. But yeah, not a ton of events in the area historically.

All that said East coast is probably due to have an SA. The last few: Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Ontario, Portland.... The last east coast one was in Lake Placid in 2009.

Skate Canada is bit out of the way for me... I may only go if the skater selection is great.

I suppose it's unlikely that Skate America will be held in the mid-west next season? :sarcasm:

Not necessarily? There's still Ohio.

For reference: They announced 2014 Skate America's venue on March 25, 2014. They announced 2013 Skate America in Detroit on the same day. 2011 Skate America venue was revealed around March 4. So they're late relative to past years.

However, they're no later then Kent (Seattle area), which was announced on May 4, 2012. But I believe the circumstance is that the original venue (which I heard was Detroit, actually) fell through at the last minute.

Worlds was in DC when I was 7.....grrrrrr...... -.- WAY before I became a fan of skating. :bang:

Sweet! Baltimore hosted 1989 nationals?! What was the venue?

I hope Skate America will be close enough where my dad and I can take a "road trip" there if possible. Good thing I have no Friday classes the upcoming fall semester.

You know Denver is centrally located, and would be convenient for a number of top skaters.

Save money by sending Josh, Max, Jason, Mariah, Mirai, Max and Maddie and Alexa and Chris, I would be fine with that!

Fingers crossed for Cleveland, though I doubt I'll be so lucky. The only way I can realistically go to an event during my last year of grad school is if it's in my city.

While there is a rule that prevents world medalists from attending the same grand prix events, I'm pretty certain that the skaters don't have the power to choose what events they go to. The LOC for each event invites the skaters that they want.

The top 2 seeds DO get to say where they would prefer to skate, and the #3 seed gets the remaining two events. The seeds are selected by the representatives of the host countries at the ISU GP meeting, and the top seeds' preferences are honored. The LOCs have nothing to do with the selection.

I may have confused the LOC with the hosts, but there is nothing in the GP announcement about the top seed choosing his spots. Apparently it's random:

Skaters/couples who have placed 1 – 6 in each of the 4 disciplines (Men, Ladies, Pairs, Ice Dance) at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2013 will be considered to be seeded skaters/couples and will be assigned, by draw, to skate in two events

There is nothing in the announcement about medalists choosing or whatnot so I think anything other than the above is speculation. The following thread and others on FSU also say that the selection process, even for the medalists, is not standardized.

I may be absolutely wrong and misunderstanding, but if you have any releases by the ISU that explains this system any better, please let me know! I've been doing some research and the above quote is all I could find on the designation involving the seeded skaters. The rest are all things that people post on forums.

Reading that archived thread produced all sorts of lol now that we know how the season turned out.

I got all excited when looking at the forums main page and I noticed that next years JGP and the Senior B/Challenger Series threads were added :yay: :hb:

I'm not ready to speculate yet but I'm always willing to listen.

I would however love to see Yulia and Mariah at Skate America. :sayingAprayer:
