Great DVD's to rent

a bit of Julie Andrews/Movie news: she will narrate one of Disney's new 2D animated movies which is set for ... next year I believe.... :)

This is not a movie and I don't know if it's available for rental (I picked it up at Wal-Mart for about $5.00) but the ESPN SportsCentury Greatest Athletes DVD about Wayne Gretzky is really an interesting and entertaining piece. I don't think you have to be either a hockey or a Gretzky fan to enjoy it, as I'm neither, but a friend suggested his autobiography to me and I think that after seeing this, I'll make the attempt to find and read it.

Anyone seen "Little Children"?

Since it is that time of year...........I recommend "Shag: The Movie". It is an old movie about four girls who are graduating high school and take a trip to Myrtle Beach SC for a final fling, instead of the trip their parents think they are taking to Fort Sumter. It is a a FUN movie with great music and lots of references to the era......1963. Stars Bridget Fonda, Phoebe Cates, Annabeth Gish, and Paige Hannah. Also, the late Carrie Hamilton (Carol Burnette's daughter). BTW "Shag" is a type of dancing made famous in Myrtle Beach, done to beach music.

dutch - how much sex/language/other negative content - is in brassed off? Ewan plays my instrument (baritone) but I don't have any idea if I'd be able to handle the film... love him but most of his movies are too much for me.

Mmmm... I don't recall any sex at all except in reference, for example: Gloria invites Andy (Ewan) up for coffee and he replies, "I don't drink coffee," and she replies, "I haven't got any." ;) There's a moderate amount of language-- but of course, they are coal miners, so... Pete Postlethwaite is amazing in the film as the director of the miners' band. In fact, that clip from the beginning of that song "Tubthumping" about "I thought music mattered..." is one of Postlethwaite's lines from this movie. Honestly, Toni, if you are a baritone player, and love music as much as I do, you'll be too blown away by the GORGEOUS music in it and the compelling story to notice the language. Ewan isn't that great at pretending to play the baritone, but it doesn't really matter because the music in the movie is performed by a real miner band that is unbelievably talented.

Sean: You met Annabella???

I just rented Pan's Labyrinth and The Painted Veil the other night. Pan's Labyrinth was pretty amazing, but definitely NOT for kids. There's a monster in it that scared ME, and my birthday's on HALLOWEEN! The Painted Veil was interesting and understated, and visually very appealing (and not just because Edward Norton's in it).

I saw The waitress over the Holidays. It was just okay. I would just wait for it to come on DVD if you want to see it.

IIRC he does play a brass instrument and I want to say he does play the baritone... or trumpet (Same basic fingerings, which is how I was able to learn to play)... my guess would be that they used clips for different songs... and they didn't match up...

but I could be wrong, it's a bit sketchy lol I'm a bad Ewan fan ;)

will have to see if blockbuster has it up here.

Anyone seen "Little Children"?

I did, Piel. Have you?

You can't go wrong with renting any of the the Best Picture nominees from this year's Oscars:

"The Departed"
"Little Miss Sunshine"
"Letters From Iwo Jima"
"Babel"
"The Queen"

Also:

"Blood Diamond"
"Venus"
"Half Nelson"
"The Last King of Scotland"
"Little Children"
"Dreamgirls"

I saw all of these in the time leading up to the Oscars...most in the theater and a couple on DVD. I still need to see "The Pursuit of Happyness", "Volver", "Notes on a Scandal" and "The Devil Wears Prada", to round out having seen all of the acting nominations. Plus I still have to see "United 93", the only Best Director nominee that I haven't seen.
