Hersch article re:Ladies at Nats...

Yep Hersch is definitely smoking on something. It's too early to tell how Meissner will fare. Sure she has the potential but I'm uncertain as to how she's going to improve and how much for Turino. At the moment, I think her inexperience will hurt her but that's just my guess.

Think about the 2 divas who will undoubtedly fade away in about a year after their return from Italy. Who among the following will be in Calgary for the Worlds: Jenny, Bebe, Katy, Alisa, Emily, Megan, or KIMMIE?

I would say Kimmie has the potential along with Bebe, and this is much less than 2 years away.

I don't at all disagree with Hersch that Kimmie has loads of potential, along with these other ladies. My beef with his article is that he seems to be suggesting that Kimmie Wuzrobbed by placing third. That's the part I DON'T get.

And there she will be able to test herself against 14-year-old Mao Asada, who also has a triple Axel, but is not eligible for 2006 Worlds or the Olympics. First things first, Kimmie.

Today's Detroit Free Press also ran an article today saying that Kimmie deserved 6.0s for tech. Since the judges were giving them out like candy, why not? Free Press Olympic Sports reporter also said that Meissner was now Michelle's greatest rival.

Poor Sasha. A couple of less-than-perfect performances and all of a sudden she's history :rolleye:

First things first.

Kimmie is now going to have to deal with the hype. A 6.0 for tech when she skated FIRST in the final group? The 6.0's are handed out like candy in presentation way more than in tech. Kimmie has great potential but how many 15 yr. olds have we seen who looked great disappear? Puberty hasn't really hit her. Looking at the podium pictures she's the same height as Michelle and Sasha now. She is in that dangerous time of injury that happens at that age. So many have bit the dust because of it. We'll have to see what happens next year.
You never know.

Did she get 6.0 for Tech mark? I thought it was 5.9?

The thing is, in Sasha's first Nationals she won the short program and ended up second. Five years ago, Sasha had something that Kimmie doesn't in presentation skills.
Absolutely true! I was totally space out after that Cleveland LP. Sasha was divine, and imo, deserved the gold. But since then she has not come near that captivating performance except for a Campbell's Swan Lake some 4 years later and now it's reversed again.

I think Kimmie will build on her bronze to silver to gold in three years if not sooner. She may be that teenybopper who steals the Olys in 2006.

Maybe that's why she didn't win gold.

The Ladies statistic applies to OLYMPIC GOLD medal winners, not to Olympic medal winners. Kimmie has a shot at a medal, but it's not likely to be gold.

I'd say the OGM winner in 2006 will have stood on the World podium at some point before 2006. Candidates: Kwan, Slutskaya, Sokolova, Suguri, Arakawa, Cohen and the Worlds 2005 medalwinners, whoever they may be, and possibly (if she returns to eligible skating) Sarah Hughes.

Elizabeth Manley had quite a struggle with her health and her skating before she pulled it together and won the silver at the Calgary Olympics - so not going in as a contender worked in her favour. It took some of the focus and pressure off her. No one expected her to be on the podium; least of all her. She was the "dark horse" so to speak.

The main reason so many of the skaters are World Champions going into the Olympics is because the Olympics only happen every four years. The Worlds take place every year - go figure.

Meissner's vs Ito's triple axel ... no match !

I often wonder what kind of marks Midori Ito would get if she skated now. If you think 6.0 is appropriate for Kimmie Meissner, then I'd give Midori 7.0 ! For those of you who were not watching skating at the time (I am giving out my age here !) please go download a couple of Midori's programs to see "the real stuff" when it comes to jumping ability ... and triple axels. One of my favorite is her free skate at 90's World !!! Her triple axel is cosmic, of course she does with ease every other triple jump and finishes her routine with a 3 toe-3 toe combo as easily as others do a double jumps combo (by the way she won that freeskate but only came second of the competition after screwing the compulsory figures).

We do have some CoP figures on Meissner's presentation, from the JGP. Here are Kimmie's PCS scores as compared to winner Mao Asada and silver medalist Yu Na Kim:

55.71 7.09 6.88 7.00 6.88 6.97 0.00 Asada
46.30 5.94 5.69 5.78 5.81 5.72 1.00 Meissner
48.78 6.31 5.97 6.09 6.03 6.09 1.00 Kim

Kimmie's presentation (as represented by her PCS scores) is quite good when measured against all other Juniors except Asada and Kim. But I don't think her scores would hold up against top Senior skaters.

As if!

Ridiculousness!

Doggygirl, whatever Hersch is smokin', you can have it, because it is way too strong for me.

Kimmie had a great nationals, but Hersch is way too premature to be crowning her! "Technical" includes things like footwork, spins, spirals... duh! Plus it was a bit of a wonky landing on that axel, c'mon. Some people are outraged they even certified it.

Mao Asada creamed Kimmie in the Jr GPF. Kimmie had a bad SP, but Mao beat her in every category, in every skate. I think we pretty much agree that COP would not have been friendlier to Kimmie. For one thing, a lot of those jumps seemed quite telegraphed... I would invite elingrace4eva to break down Kimmie's LP for the tech score as she did for Michelle and Sasha... though of course, it's those pesky PCS scores (and GOE) that Kimmie has to work on. She has nice arms and hands, but it's "potential" at this point.

Too bad Hersch is promoting a poor image of the sport, and of the judging, and using such a poor example of it! There was plenty of bad judging at nationals, but I think Kimmie made off pretty well. If we're going to start talking about 'wuzrobbed', let's talk about Beatrisa... ;)

P.S. I'm for the age limitations; I'd much rather see "ladies" skate than girls; the skating is better when the body and mind is a little more mature.
