I guess if Yuzu did not feel this costume served the program well, he would not have used it for two seasons now. He would have changed it, like he did with some others. As simple as this. So you've got his opinion. :)

Yuzu retired from competition in 2022. Apples to Apples is probably a good idea.

He turned pro. So what?
I honestly don't understand what you mean, Why just don't accept we have different points of view and different opinions? It's perfectly alright to differ. :)

Even Yuzu would agree with what I'm about to say. You can't have radically different circumstances for skaters and somehow expect a fair result. What Yuzu is doing at the current time is, yes, professional. The other people are still competing and their programs are presented in a competitive environment. Whether it is the budget, degree of choice, materials, designer, or even creative input, no one is going to have the same level of freedom as Yuzu does outside of competitive skating. He is constrained by nothing and no one in the same way a competitive skater could be. And, yes, that means costumes. So if anyone is keen on giving an award to Yuzu for a costume, at least put his costumes in the same category as someone else in his exact set of circumstances, anything short of that is giving an unfair advantage to one person.

That's why his costume was brought up, to ask if show costumes would be allowed. Since the answer was no, it should be a non-issue then.

Well I didn't expect that humble little suggestion to blow up, of all of them (by the way, anyone else having a few problems with connection this morning? now I can get in but my emojis are hiding from me)

Firstly, I did specifically suggest it as a separate category for gala and/or show to remove the competition aspect (the design wouldn't work in comp anyway, all those fluttering ribbons). I do not at all agree that to be a successful competition costume one would have to suit every skater in that discipline (I am mildly boggling at the idea that Minsol Kwon's adorable cat costume is inferior because it would look rather less adorable and more ridiculous on Kaori or Gabrielle Daleman, or that Yulia's iconic red coat is not iconic because Mae Berenice or Bradie couldn't wear it. Or the Korean girls' dresses aren't the top tier simply because some others can't afford that level of workmanship.) Costumes are designed at this level for the person who will wear them and even more here. That was why I suggested a separate category - there are some corking gala costumes too, which deserve more love.

I mean, I agree Nathan Chen or Shun Sato probably couldn't evoke an water/ice dragon prince and therefore shouldn't try and dress like one but what on earth has that to do with it? They couldn't (imo, others may differ) wear Kolyada's far simpler White Crow well either, because it takes a level of romantic sensibility to not look terribly amateur hour theatrics. I am wincing at the mental picture of 90% of skaters past and present in Kevin's Bolero, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't tag it as this year's men's best competitive costume.

You guys have just proven the point that fan voting is just going to lead to fan wars :)
Actually I agree
That's why I was highly skeptical about this concept since the very beginning. This was just a mild case of what I was predicting would come with more skaters, more costumes and more posters involved (and an actual award up for grabs, unlike here).

I like much of this, but can we have just one show and one gala, separate from the rest, as the most beautiful - and character pitch-perfect - costume of all time never saw competitive ice?

I also have my nom for the best female competitive costume all ready to go...
That is so simple, and so elegant. Thank you for posting that picture.

Hello to the following:
@el henry. @4everchan, @Jeanie19, @TallyT

You're help has been requested to see if we can safely have a High Fashion Costume awards event where the nomination IS the reward for the most part. We may judge a few ourselves and we would love your help in refining our work, categories, rules, nominations and how to keep the peace in this venture. We decided we would rather take nominations for a best of list and not necessarily declare a winner. Kinda a reverse Mr Blackwell's list - where we reward Excellence!
Explore our discussion, enjoy the Swan Lake dissection and choose whether you want to join us!
We want this to be fun!

I don't know, can people be so biased? These are awards for the designers, not for the skaters, unless that is one and the same person, but there aren't many skaters who do that.
Nina Povey (British champion) makes her own costumes, (as well as for other skaters - the costumes are beautiful). I can't seem to get a good screenshot but you can see one of them at 1:14:52 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NMaz8chicw

Is this a seasonal competition or an all time consideration?

Also where/how are costumes nominated
Seasonal. The details are being determined for nominees and judging. For now feel free to make suggestions.

Maybe we could just have a celebration of what we think best costumes the way we had celebrated best spins, best step sequences, best choreo etc. without any ranking
Yes this - recognition without named winners since beauty is in the eye of the viewer.

For a custom costume, I would expect that it would be made to look good on the specific skater. It also has to work with their program too. If it doesn't look good on Nathan Chen, then it's because it wasn't made for him or his program style.
I agree with this.

Donovan's bling is perfect for Donovan. I can think of very few others who could carry it off, and why would they?
I love Donovan and his costumes. They are detailed, theme oriented and a reflection of his culture. I am not sure whether to create a separate category for them or to give them and honorable mention.

Oh yes, that might be fun, but you do realise I am predicably biased! (on the other hand, if I can sneak in a plea for several less known ones over the years, I'm in!) That you :)

I agree with this.
Also, to be fair, the camera does or does not love people just like humans do, and when the wearer, face and figure, photographs beautifully, it gives an extra filip to what they wear. I have a sneaking evil urge to check all contenders when caught in the middle of a jump because they all are forced to pull ridiculous faces then and some folks' natural plus points don't help so much

I didn't get a chance to read this thread in full, but wanted to ask: Both Madi Chock and Piper Gilles design the costumes for themselves and partners. Are they going to be included here?

I think they should, no best high fashion award go be without Madi's serpent dress?
