Historical "firsts" for 2014-15?

It's surely not the first time, but I figure it's been a while since all the World Champions were first-time Champions. If someone knows when was the last time this happened I would appreciate it.

That would be an interesting stat!

I wonder what the record is for most Senior internationals in a season? Because at 15, Liza must surely either own it, or have come close to it!

Last season, we witnessed so many POTO programs. Was that a warhorse/same music programme record? Or has there been other seasons where a large number of skaters used the same music as much, if not more, as last season?

I believe that this happened in 1994 and 2008. Spent a bit of time on Wikipedia to find this. But it's almost my bedtime, so I definitely could've read a few names/years wrong :p. It probably happened other years as well, but I didn't bother to look before 1994. At first I assumed 1994 was the last time, but decided to do a bit of hunting in the late 2000s anyway, and was surprised to see it happened as recently as 2008.

Thank you :) I also spend some time in Wikipedia trying to find it.
Turns out it had not been that long since it last happened, I too, was surprised to see it as early as 2008. But it’s definitely uncommon. I’ve only started counting since 1952 as that was the year Ice Dance was added. So, if I counted right, the years are:

1962
Men: Donald Jackson (CAN)
Ladies: Sjoukje Dijkstra (NED)
Pairs: Maria & Otto Jelenik (CAN)
Ice dance: Eva Romanová & Pavel Roman (CZE)

1981
Men: Scott Hamilton (USA)
Ladies: Denise Biellmann (SUI)
Pairs: Irina Vorobieva & Igor Lisovski (USSR)
Ice Dance: Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean (UK)

1994
Men: Elvis Stojko (CAN)
Ladies: Yuka Sato (JPN)
Pairs: Evgenia Shishkova & Vadim Naumov (RUS)
Ice Dance: Oksana Grishuk & Evgeni Platov (RUS)

2008
Men: Jeffrey Buttle (CAN)
Ladies: Mao Asada (JPN)
Pairs: Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy (GER)
Ice Dance: Isabelle Delobel & Olivier Schoenfelder (FRA)

2015
Men: Javier Fernandez (ESP)
Ladies: Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (RUS)
Pairs: Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford (CAN)
Ice Dance: Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron (FRA)

Thanks for finding the ones prior to 1994. I'm surprised that it's only happened five times total, but I suppose that when figures were in place, as well as the Soviet pairs/dance machine (alongside other teams like Torvill/Dean) it was much more likely for skaters to stay dominant for years and years to prevent this phenomenon from happening. I wonder if we'll see it happen more and more often as fields get deeper, more diverse nations become competitive, and results get more and more unpredictable.

Not a first, but pretty amazing -the placement of Misha Ge at Worlds from 27th in 2014 to 6th in 2015.

Looks like we are looking at more recent firsts but while I know there are a lot of G fans and this was amazing didn't skaters like Maria Butyrskaya and Lu Chen really have a year where they improved immensely?

Well, on the Denis front, I'd guess he's now the only athlete under IJS to win two World free skates without winning a World title.:slink: In fact, considering the ordinal system, I'm guessing he's the only one to do this for a loooong time. Though it would have been much more plausible in the figures era.

Was the Men's Worlds SP a historical first? The ten best skaters were from ten different countries.

Yeah, or all those het wedding threads would be verboten too! ;)

Yuzu - first time an Olympic champion compete in the following season instead of taking a season off or retire.

Yuzu - first time a skater completed a treble in the same year --> Olympic gold (Feb2014), Worlds gold (Mar2014), GPF gold (Dec2014).

Stolbova/Klimov and Lipnitskaya are also Olympic champions who competed this year. Yuna Kim and Virtue/Moir also competed during the 2010-11 season. Grishuk/Platov competed after Lillehammer. Gordeeva/Grinkov competed after Calgary.

For men's singles, Dick Button and Ondrej Nepela competed after their OGM, too. As mentioned before, Yagudin also intended to compete (completed the SP at Skate Canada I think) but had to withdraw before the LP due to injury. It's not that uncommon.

Rudy Galindo actually came out right before 1996 Nationals in the US where he won the title. He went on to win a bronze medal at the World Championships in Edmonton. But Eric is definitely the first openly gay World Champion.

Thanks for the info Gravy. I was thinking of the men's singles when writing that actually, I should have made that clearer :bang:.

From wikipedia
- Dick Button competed in 1949 after OGM in 1948 (65 years ago)
- Ondrej Nepela competed in 1972-1973 season after OGM in 1972 (42 years ago)
- Yagudin withdraw after SP at SA

From this list, since 42 years ago and since the start of COP no men single's OGM competed in the following season. One withdraw while the rest took the season/s off or retire.

So Yuzu is the first men's singles OGM in COP era to compete in the following season.

[On the other first....I should clarify the treble in the same year (not same season) for men's singles as well].

Rudy Galindo was openly gay when he won his National title and World Bronze Medal

What a great season!!! And here we all thought post Olympic seasons were dull in comparison.

Wasn't Plushenko the first to land a triple axel triple flip combo or I guess sequence. Kurt Browning the first to do a quad; Elvis Stojko the first to do a quad combo and Vern Taylor the first to do a triple axel. Elena Vorodrozeva (okay I butchered this one) was the first Russian/Soviet lady to win a world medal and Maria Butyrskaya I think was the first Russian or soviet based lady to win world gold while Adelina was the First Russian/soviet based lady to win ogm. Was Debi Thomas the first Afro American lady to win a world championship too? Amazingly bielleman was NOT the first to do the bielleman spin. She just did it so well.

Well there was this but I'm not sure if you want to include it...

She makes the jumps look effortless, almost as if she's merely lifting a leg and then simply turning around. Also, the fumbling around on the ending pose really demonstrates the difficultly of standing up straight on the ice while wearing ice skates. But mostly, I admire her determination for never giving up on the program.
