Holiday Prep and celebrations

Well, tomorrow evening (Monday, March 6 @ sundown - through Tuesday evening @ sundown) is the joyous Jewish holiday of Purim. We read the Megillah (scroll) of the Biblical book of Esther & how she saved the Jewish people of Persia from destruction from the evil Haman. We dress in costumes & put on a Purim "shpiel" (play) complete with the reading of the Megillah & song parodies related to the Biblical story of Esther. I enjoy singing, so I look forward to participating in our synagogue's Purim Shpiel every year. This year's theme is "A Hoedown Purim," & we will be accompanied by a Jewish bluegrass band. In other years, we had had a variety of other fun themes - A Beatles Purim, a Billy Joel one, a "Hamilton" one, a Saturday Night Fever one, Sports Purim (I wore my figure skating gear - t-shirt & SOI cap for that one), Star Wars, Sesame Street, A "Greased" Purim, ... We eat a special triangular pastry called a hamantasch (named after the triangular shaped hat Haman supposedly wore). In Israel these pastries are called "Oznei Haman" - Haman's ears). Many Jewish communities also have Purim carnivals.

Once Purim is over, Passover is only one month away! Lots of preparation for that (special foods, preparing for seders)

Thank you for posting about your Purim celebrations! Very interesting to read about!

So, did anyone do anything for St. Patrick's Day?

I had some friends who hosted a dinner party for about 25. Corned beef and cabbage, potato stew, soda bread, and a table full of desserts.

I think Easter is next for me, and then Mother's Day and Memorial Day.
Sounds like a fine celebration🥰 nice to have a large gathering to celebrate!
Family dinner with potato leek soup, cabbage boiled then lightly sautéed, hearty bread with butter and omelettes instead of meat.. us old fogies gave up on corned beef long ago which makes sense because our chickens provide plenty of eggs…
wearing of the green, of course..
being more Scots than Irish, we pulled from the freezer and thawed half a Dundee cake warmed up served with pistachio ice cream.. my BIL found lots of Irish music on YouTube.. good time

and now we move on to Passover and Easter.

I'll be going out with family on Easter Sunday to a brunch buffet. Should be nice. After that, we'll be back at my brother and sister-in-law's place for dessert and coffee.

we're not exchanging anything for Easter, but I'll give something to my nephew, who is 9. It can't be chocolate however, he's dairy allergic. I'll find some fruit flavored candies to give him.

My windows are decorated for Easter. The main picture window has a big bunny flag hanging on it, and the window has pink lights around the perimeter. the smaller windows on either side have light up Easter egg outlines, similar to this.

Anyone else have any holiday plans upcoming?

Well, I did the majority of my Passover food shopping 2 weeks ago (I get a pretty early start, a few days after Purim). I will start baking by tomorrow. We'll have a small seder @ home on Wednesday evening, and attend a communal seder with friends who belong to a nearby synagogue the second evening (next Thursday). I attend synagogue services on the first day of the holiday (Thursday morning next week), the Sabbath of the holiday (Saturday morning, April 8), and on the last morning of the holiday.

Lots of options for vegan chocolate (dairy free) btw... if ever it's something you would like to do...

I used to celebrate Easter but just because the house where I was living celebrated (I am not religious myself) ... It was a huge deal with a buffet which had to have ham and salmon (the house tradition?) and many other dishes...

We would gather together the day before to boil eggs that were then dyed.... they would be hidden in the garden for a proper egg hunt...
we kept the eggs that we found and made egg salad sandwiches the next day. This had to be done carefully : eggs were hidden at the last minute to avoid attracting raccoons HA !

There was obviously lots of chocolate eggs for the kids too...

Now, the long weekend is more about spring cleaning and setting things up in the garden.

How many people usually go to the communal seder?
Well, the last one (pre-COVID in 2019) had about 150 people (@ least), I would say. I think this year's will be well attended. People are eager to gather together @ this point. During COVID, our synagogue's communal seder & our friends' synagogue communal seder (on the second night of the holiday) were on Zoom.

Our synagogue won't be hosting a communal seder this year, but there will be a Kosher for Passover luncheon following Saturday morning Sabbath services (Saturday, April 8).

Hiya 4everchan. First, I left out a word when I posted, he's my grand-nephew, the son of my niece.

He doesn't seem to be very keen on sweets, I think because he hasn't had very many, because the use of dairy is so prevalent.

I will say that we've found a few bakeries that have vegan options, so we always have vegan cookies or cupcakes on hand for him. He seems to have a taste for fruity flavored stuff, and likes candies like Sour Patch Kids or other gummy candies, so he always has a selection of those.

Tomorrow my family will be going to an Easter brunch buffet at a local restaurant, and then to my brother and sister-in-law's place for coffee and to visit a bit.

I got my grand-nephew a small basket with a gift card to a sporting goods store, and a small box of Sweetarts, and a small box of Swedish Fish.

A Happy Easter to all who observe the holiday. May it be a joyous, blessed time for you & your families.

Happy Passover (we're half way through the holiday @ this point) to all of the Jewish posters here.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter or Passover!

Due to some lower back problems, I ended up staying home yesterday instead of going to visit family. That was disappointing but worse still, I'm here by myself with a box of KILLER cookies (see link) -- unchaperoned. :eek2: Gotta get those puppies in the mail before something really bad happens...

We did! We had a delicious pizza topped with broccoli, mushrooms, olives, onions, tomatoes ...!
