Ice Dance Annual Meeting

The 2019-2020 senior & junior rhythm dance selection is "Musical, Operetta, Broadway".

How do those ice dance fans who denigrated a Moulin Rouge FD for being (by their standards) lowbrow feel about this?

We thought the ISU was doing major things by shortening men and pairs program lengths in addition to changing the GOE scale. But then they make sure ice dance doesn't go unscathed either. ;)

My only one problem with MR was/is that it is so overused music, same POTO. When they announced musicals/broadway, they should write a clausule saying (except MR and POTO).

"Musical, Operetta, Broadway" could be good (even if it's not my taste at all) but let's not kid ourselves, we are going to end up with, wait for it : POTO, Moulin Rouge, a bit of Sing Sing Sing cut in there, My fair lady, Singin' in the Rain, les Mia, Cats...

About the "enjoyable/colorful/engaging", it's just the "uplifting" rule (circa 2011-2012 IIRC?) again isn't it?
Interesting that it's W/P's dramatic "Je suis malade" that did stand out that year it the myriad of fake smiles uplifting FDs.

I think the "enjoyable/colourful/engaging" bonus is a good idea theoretically, but is probably going to be executed poorly in reality. The concept itself has good intentions behind it, and it's something I've thought about often myself. While there are many viewers who tune in to watch the last two groups, as someone who tends to watch the entire competition I notice that many lower level teams come up with more interesting elements and program concepts to get noticed by the judges (unlike the top teams who tend to be more conventional), and this goes unnoticed in the marks.

I think ISU has the right idea, but they still haven't found the right words to explain it and the right way to implement it. What I hope for is that the vast majority of teams get no bonus (so 0 points for this), very few get -1 and hopefully, if there are more interesting programs, some more teams get +1. I doubt that that's the way that it's gonna go, but hopefully the judges choose to go down this path with regards to this rule.

What is the difference between the combination one foot step and the no touch step. It sounds like essentially the same thing except that the the one foot step is all on one foot. But in the no touch step, skaters do perform turns on one foot.

I agree. I found it very encouraging that the isu dance committee is addressing something that has been missing since IJS-evaluating the program as a whole because the program components have failed to reflect that.
But i do think that this will need to be revisted and revised and better explained to ensure it does not simply become another component.

Can the isu post videos about what these new elements will look like, i am struggling to visualise

Well if Broadway is an option, I hope the skaters will choose songs from "Rent," "Mamma Mia (Not the usual choices)," "Wicked," "Cats," etc.

Ooooo and that will mean that "Willy Wonka Jr." Could be used.

Ok I am confused... are we actually getting a musical season or is this just a rumor?

Because if so, I think South Park Bigger Longer Uncut qualifies as a "Musical, Operetta, Broadway"... i mean "Blame Canada" was nominated for an Oscar... and Trey and Matt did go on to do Book of Mormon, which did respectably. Come on... on we need to see "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" on the GP!

Yeah, its a desicion regarding program as a whole. They just named it the way they named it  its basically the thing people think is judged in CO mark - does choreography of the program telling a story, has a meaning. If impression of choreography is good you are getting a point for it...so its a point for a choreographer basically.

"Musical, Operetta, Broadway" will be the Rhythm Dance (ex Short Dance) for 2019/20 season.

The Pattern Dance type step sequence must be skated on one the following rhythms: Quickstep, Blues, March, Polka, Foxtrot. Juniors will have to do Tea Time Foxtrot (newly introduced pattern, from Kaliszek and Spodirev's 2015/16 SD)

It was announced during the ISU Ice Dance Technical Committee meeting on Friday
You can review the whole meeting at the following link. The 2019/20 RD part is at around 1:52:15 time

I want to say that all you folks who sat through 2 and half hours of this meeting:

I salute you.

Maybe we will see the Book of Mormon on ice!

Hello
Turn it off

Or maybe Green Day... American Idiot was a Musical
And Spider-man Turn off the Dark

I guess for novice / Juniors Billy Elliot and Annie would be the choice, and Harry Potter now has a musical

This 'entertainment' bonus is so ambiguous. A balanced, well-choreographed and well-executed program is always entertaining and a pleasure to watch. This component is already reflected in PCS marks. Top teams will easily get this bonus thanks to their reputation, the reaction of the crowd, better skating skills, and other factors. Judges awarding weak teams with low PE, CO and IN marks just for making them laugh and being fun will look silly despite their programs could be true gems if performed more skillfully. Besides, tastes differ. Some people go to museums for entertainment, others play video games. There is no need for the ISU to make the judging in this sport even more subjective and controversial than it is now IMHO.

Hi,
Just watched the ISU video on the proposed changes for Ice Dance. (...)

New Pattern dances for seniors - Tea Time Foxtrot, Maple Leaf March, Rhumba D'Amor.
I know the first two from 2015-16, but does anybody know what is Rhumba D'Amor? I presume it's one of the pattern dance style steps we've seen this season but which team's?
