Ideas for Virtue & Moir

Yes - its overused music

See, this is where my inexperience in figure skating shows... not being aware of the overused "Red Violin" and "Mission"...:p

p.s.
never mind... for some reason I lost the rest of my post... sorry

I don't think the Red Violin is overused. Besides Michelle Kwan in the 1999-2000 season, does anyone know who else has skated to it?

Also, here is a mystery that I have always wondered about. The movie was released in New York and Los Angeles in June of 1999 (it won an Oscar for best score that year). But Michelle skated to it at the 1999 Worlds exhibition 4 months earlier.

The movie might have been released in Canada earlier, but I don't think the CD of the soundtrack was made available until later. So...did Lori Nichol have some sort of inside connection in the movie music business, to be able to get hold of this music before the general public knew anything about it?

I was curious about this, and looked it up on the IMDB. The Red Violin premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September of 1998, and was released to theaters in Canada in November of the same year (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120802/releaseinfo). This would have given Nichol plenty of time to get find the music and do the choreography in time for 1999 Worlds.

I'm not aware of anyone other than MK skating to it, but as others have noted, there have been lots of programs skated to The Mission in recent years (e.g. Kostner, Szolkowy/Savchenko).

On the subject of musical mysteries, the first Lord of the Rings movie was out in December 2001, and yet I remember Todd Eldredge skating to its score that season. Did he use something else during the earlier part of the season?

I think, thay could skate to Nightwish "Sleeping sun" - what do you think?

(...continued from the previous post)

Also, "Rahkamo & Kokko" came across during my quickstep research. What a style! This was the best quickstep on ice that I could find so far...

It was also interesting to compare their "Valse Triste" with V/M's version.

I think these programs are something to admire and I feel that V/M has α factor added to their quality.

The ISU must agree with you (as do I)! The new Quickstep CD is based on R&K's quickstep, and is called the "Finnstep" in their honor. It will be used in seniors this coming season.

I wonder what it would be like for V/M to try out with Michael Seibert... besides Marina... just for the sake of variety... or did they already?

Has Seibert ever choreographed for a top 5 team? Other than Blumberg & Seibert of course. (And the Blumberts are one of my all time favorite dance teams. Alack, they often fell in times of great stress and so never got more than a bronze medal at Worlds, AFAIR)

As you may have noticed by now, I have been following Gordeeva/Grinkov for a long time... and realized that Michael Seibert had choreographed some programs for G/G and Katia's solo.

I am not aware if Seibert has choreographed for amateur competitions. However, the following programs show how I remember his work. Both programs being young, fresh, soft and lyrical... it seems to have all the qualities that can speak for V/M...

I really wish they would do something original and fun. And I would like to hear some new music. Good music too. So how about either one of these 2 tracks by the Go! Team?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU1Ki1QsqLg

(the cd version is a little cleaner, but the vocals can't be understood. Cool base, killer horn section)

(à la 70's, I love this track)

OK, both are a little short, on time, but come on, brilliant music. Am I crazy in thinking that either of these tracks would make a really good free dance? Or is it too risky?

Allow me to go nuts with Youtube a little bit...

I was talking earlier about something by Justice, here's Phantom

OK, I'm done.

Well, I guess I was not quite done.
One last idea:

Star Witness by Neko Case.

That link is to her website music player. It's song #2.
A heartbreaking countryish song.
(If that song does not move you, check for a pulse, you might be dead)

For me, this is one of the better choices that I have seen from you.
What I find interesting is the spoken rhythm and the clarity in her voice that projects it. I also like the fact that there isn't any sound that competes with her voice.
Having said that, I am wondering if you know if Neko Case has any longer guitar (or any instrument) interlude, duet with a male voice or something that can give some sort of textural contrast. See, I think it is important to have at least three variety of sound source to make it interesting for a figure skating program. For instance, V/M's FD had violin, female/male voice and orchestra sound that were put together in the editing room.

I am a youtube buff like you and happened to bump into a charming montage of them to The Way I am by Ingrid Michaelson... somewhat along the line of Neko Case... and I have to say it was quite amazing how musically the motions were fit to the lyric... I think the key to this type of music are word, timing... maybe with a touch of whimsy...

After all, I am interested in to see how creatively skaters can come up with choreography to any sound especially after watching a couple of ground breaking performances by Gary Beacom.

That is one of my favorite songs- the mood is certainly a tricky one to convey. Melancholy, rangy, but hopeful all at the same time. They would really need a North American or British choreographer to make this piece of music work though.

I noticed that their latest exhibition to Switchfoot's "Dare you to move" while a great song that really creates a mood- doesn't quite sit right on them. It's like the choreography is a little too bland/pretty to truly convey the insistent feeling of the lyrics. And while their movement is beautiful it doesn't really have that rock modern quality that worked so well in say things that Kurt Browning choreographs.
