Ideas for Virtue & Moir

I noticed that their latest exhibition to Switchfoot's "Dare you to move" while a great song that really creates a mood- doesn't quite sit right on them. It's like the choreography is a little too bland/pretty to truly convey the insistent feeling of the lyrics. And while their movement is beautiful it doesn't really have that rock modern quality that worked so well in say things that Kurt Browning choreographs.

So agree with you on this. I felt that the song really wasn't their style, and although the dancing itself was very good, it kind of existed as a separate entity than the music.

What I'd like to see from V&M is an FD that expresses a range of emotions -- happiness, sadness, hopefulness, despair -- a complete story. I wonder, though, if Tessa would be able to pull something like that off? IMO, she had a great deal of difficulty getting into the "gypsy" character in their OD, and only got the character of the FD at their very last performance (Worlds).

I was surprised by the exhibition change as well; it didn't really suit them and it perplexed me.

I haven't looked through the entire thread but I will in a moment. I wonder if it's possible to make an arrangement of Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummer's Dance." It's a stark contrast to what they've done the last two seasons, but I was just listening to it and it made me think of them.
Another vocals piece could be Josh Groban's "For Always," although that might be more of an exhibition piece, I think it could possibly work in competition. His "Un Amore Per Sempre" would be another piece that I think would work for either V/M or D/W.
Possibly either Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-Sharp, Op 3 #2 (I believe this is the piece that Michelle intended to use for Torino). It might be a bit heavy, but I just pictured them skating to it.

Watching their Worlds gala interview, I got the feeling that they didn't really like their exhibition either. ;) It's clear that it's something they threw together because their first exhibition program didn't work out.

That is one of my favorite songs- the mood is certainly a tricky one to convey. Melancholy, rangy, but hopeful all at the same time. They would really need a North American or British choreographer to make this piece of music work though.

I believe that they could not only pull it off, but that with the right choreographer, it would be another stunner of a program.

Of course, chances of that happening are slim to none.

Nevertheless, I'll wish upon a star or something like that.

I must be the exception because I really enjoyed the exhibition; however I really like that song by Switchfoot ( " Dare You to Move")- so I was predisposed to like it...

I think it would be interesting if they used something bluesey- something like the older Bonnie Raitt songs ( 1970s albums that my old BF used to like)- but no vocals!!

You know, being a huge Switchfoot fan and a huge V/M fan, this is hard to say, but I agree with you. V/M just don't fit that song very well. In fact, the only true "rock" song they ever did very well was their exhibition where she was the ballerina and he was, um, not. I can't remember the name of the song for the life of me, but anyway, I think that was the only rock song they ever pulled off very well. I think they fit other styles of music much better.

You're right. I think what suits them best is music with a more romantic style. I think Tenesse Waltz was the best exhibition piece they ever had. They should stick to something along that line.

... or stick to the choreographer who created "Tenesse Waltz" for them! (I think it was their Canadian coach who did it...)

... Seriously, was there even any choreography invloved in "Dare you to Move"?... besides throwing in familiar movements together from their competition programs...

Jyshin, you're right about the choreographer -- Susie McGrigor created "Tennessee Waltz" -- as posted here.

As much as I originally liked "Dare You to Move", after a while I realised as well that is resembles their "Parapluies de Cherboug" program very much, with entire sequences copied. Perhaps they ran out of time to create a new program, given that they toured in Europe over the vacations... but in general I think their programs are quite good, and the exception is their exhibition numbers this year.

Does she still coach them? Or is she an ex-coach?

The straight line lift was identical to the one in their FD. Such a pity about their exhibitions this season, especially since they are such beautiful skaters.

I don't think she coaches them anymore, though she might be available for choreography when Igor and Marina are busy... with so many teams in Canton, maybe they didn't always have tht time to chroreograph exhibition programs, or maybe Tessa and Scott were home for some vacation?
The straight line lift was also in their original exhibition program, but so was the final lift... the part part of "Dare you to move" looked exactly like "Umbrellas", I think. It's a pity, because they usually have such wonderful gala programs!

I personally never understood why their first exhibition program wasn't well received. I thought it suited them perfectly. I really liked it.

I agree with all of you about the second one. Great song/music but their skating to it just didn't fit (and I really didn't like the open-backed dress, but that's just my opinion). And definitely waay too similar to the FD. I wondered if they even took the time to Listen to those lyrics.

I'd love to see that first exhibition piece come back in some sort of reincarnation.

Guys, did you saw Scott at WCh gala training? I think, he can show all tipe of music and i wonder - why they didnt have some cool and fun exhibitions

It will all come along... remember!... they are young~
I am just enjoying the moment as of now... um... watching them skate for the first time this year...was like falling in love at first sight... Whatever they do would please me... They made my heart pound again!!!... and that's all what matters for me

I'd love to see V&M do an exhibition to the waltz from "Coppelia" (with Tessa playing the doll, and Scott the doll-maker). The potential for good comedy is pretty high.

I think they would do marvelously with music from The Notebook. I just keep thinking of that music for them.
