Ilia Malinin

So today was the ice show at Ion. I went with one of my friends and the stage looked quite cute with all the holiday decorations. There was a crooner/holiday singer there to sing holiday songs. He was great, but the problem was that the first act was mostly him singing and not as much skating. Towards the end of the first act, there was a couple skating to “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” It felt a bit cringe to me until they stopped skating and the male skater started talking how much the female skater meant to him. Then he got down on one knee and proposed to her. She said yes!

The 2nd half was better paced and had a lot more skating. Elizabeth Tkachenko and Alexei Kiliakov Jr. of Israel brought a lot of energy. So did Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin of Georgia and Lorraine McNamara and Anton Spirodonov of the USA. Then Ilia came out. Oh my goodness. So much energy is his “I Feel Good” EX program. He was feeling the music so well. After he skated, the singer went back on the microphone and mentioned that it was Ilia’s birthday. And of course, everyone sung happy birthday. There was a little girl who came out with a small cake with candles. Looked like it had chocolate frosting on it. He blew out the candles and then the final group of everyone came out. There were other skating groups in between and performing. Some with kids younger than 5. And they’re better than I’ll ever be.

Overall, it was a great show. Like I said, the first half could have been done better. Also before the show, Ilia was talking to Kiliakov, Tkachenko, and Spirodonov. I wanted to go over to say hi, that I was the one who gave him the hat with his name on it at the SOI M&G in Baltimore, happy birthday, and good luck at the GPF. But I was too nervous to walk over there and I didn’t want to interrupt them and look like a weirdo. Oh well. Here’s are some pictures of Ilia from the show

Ilia at Holiday Spectacular - I Feel So Good
Lighting was rather dark so the quality is not good.
The screaming voice in the video is not mine, lol.

I might have let out a few "WOOOOs" when everyone else did it. Cause I sure wasn't going to be the only one doing it.

I won't be surprised if Liza turns into another skating phenom like his brother. He dotes on his sister, and she's really good for her age. Very much like Ilia.

Ilia was incredibly special even as a little kid, though he had it tough given the expectations around him and his training. If he gets second place, like when he lost in Philly to Nicolas Hseih (I could still remember the screams when the score was announced and he lost), or when he didn't make it to the nationals when he was in novice at the Boxborough MA sectionals (he got 5th), he was so fearful because that meant he was grounded from using electronics for at least a couple of weeks to a month. And you know how boys are glued to their electronics and playstations.

I just hope Ilia stays healthy. I love to see what else he can accomplish.

A Japanese magazine, Figure Skating (issue 99), has a long and interesting interview with Tatiana Malinina (Ilia's mom). I don't have time to translate and since the interview was done by Ms. Flade, hopefully it will be published on the ISU website.

A few interesting tidbits:
- During the pandemic his rink was closed for 3 months and he really focused on off-ice training, which helped him master quads when he returned to the ice.
- Ilia has been practicing 5T and 5S using harness.
- 4A really requires focus and energy so much so that he told mom that when 4A was done, he felt the half of the program was over. Tatiana told him "why don't you stop jumping it (4A) in the program, then?" and Ilia replied "I want to do it for my fans."
- Tatiana thinks that Ilia's sister, Elizaveta, has the same level of talent as Ilia does and may have better skating skills. She is 8 years old and has been practicing both singles and solo dance.

USFSA posted this video today of having Ilia and Isabeau guess the 90's items. I figured all of them out. It was hilarious when Ilia was like, "That's Justin Timberlake?!" Oh dear oh dear lol.

So I am a little confused... I remember his agent, Ari, said Ilia would not do AOI in favor of 4CC, but this year AOI begins after 4CC is over and Ilia's name is on the AOI website.

Ah, the will he?.won't he? on the 4A. Sure looks like he's practicing it. I'm sure it puts a lot of pressure on him when he does it. I'll be interested to see how it goes! Good luck to him!
