I very much enjoyed both of Ilia's programs. The music is a bit off-putting at first but he really sells it and I ended up thinking it was genius. You can see the improvement he's made in delivery since last year and how he's skating to the music and just not rushing to the next jump. I'm actually glad he isn't using a workhorse or a familiar piece of music because it sets him apart from the rest of the field. Well done!

I also really like Ilia's programs. He's a natural showman, and the free skate really highlights that. Coupled with his technical capabilities, he's a hard skater to beat. There is more he can do with the transitions and step sequences, IMO, but that will be things to focus on going forward, in addition to whatever he's planning for the jumps by the end of the season. I like the short program a bit less, but he skated it well and there are some nice moments. It serves as a nice contrast to the free skate.

I was so confused at the music choice for the FS at first, but the edit is smart, and it works really well for him. Still melodic but also just enough "out there" to feel fresh. Also, if someone told me a few years ago that we'd have a world figure skating champ using music like NF and Falling In Reverse for competition, I would have thought they were crazy, but it just feels natural and on brand for Ilia, someone not afraid to push the boundaries. With his success last year, he has the privilege of being more bold, and this is the year to expose skating to new musical styles (and also to expose those music fanbases to skating). I wouldn't be surprised if he's more conservative with his music selections next year for the Olympics, but this is a good year to explore.

Lastly, THE COSTUME! His free skate costume is amazing, and I'm almost sad to hear it'll be changed for the second half of the season but also excited because could it be even better? After years of H&M shirts, it's just nice to see some theatricality shown in the costumes again, lol.

I hope the music choices aren't too conservative for the Olympics. We need something memorable! And I love love LOVE his FP.
