Ilia Malinin

In case anyone hasn't seen his winning free skate:

He set the Junior Men's record in scores this weekend. Excited to see him next season. His kiss and cry with Raf and his dad was so adorable. I swear Raf hasn't been this excited since Nathan won Rostelecom in 2017.

Ilia’s trying 4As. And it’s damn close. On his Instagram stories

It's prerotated but not as much as some (clearly under half a rotation, so it's not downgradable), it's underrotated but not much (I can't really see but it looks about as underrotated as Yuzuru Hanyu's attempt in Beijing? It was about 100° missing), somehow it's "a real 4A", rather like Shoma Uno's low jumps. And he's only 17!
I wonder how long it would take him to put it in a program, at least in a minor competition. It couldn't be validated as such, but it could be certified, like Yuzuru Hanyu's and unlike the other attempts I've seen so far, which were rather clear downgrades.
Do you think 4A base value will rise?
How to say, I'm happy because he must be very happy and his parents too, and deservedly so, and on the other hand I'm afraid it's too much for a 17-year-old body. I hope that he's got very good medical support, and that their advice is attended to, because he's so promising that he can become a very great jumper and maybe a great all-around skater, but he could also be made to overwork and get career-ending injuries.

I don’t think they would rise BV for 4A. It’s more of a final frontier rn before the quint era, if it follows at all… intrigued to watch how it pans out.

Since Midori Ito was the first to do triple-triple and 3A, it makes sense Ilia would be able to land quad-quad and 4A. The main issue I see is focusing on actually winning competitions. I think Yuzuru sacrificed his prime to win medals. He could never be okay with being off the podium. Only now, towards the end of his career is he really YOLOing. As someone has said on another site Yuzuru hasn't been able to make his rotation efficient enough and jump high enough to land the 4A and it is too similar to his 3A. Ilia's 3A looks like it goes up in a smooth curve, while he gain a lot of height immediately for his 4A.
