Ilia Malinin

Ilia’s gala performance is now on YouTube. Here it is (for folks who don’t use Twitter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VghQouSPkhA
I know some of us were holding off on watching, concerned that the celebratory atmosphere of the gala might feel inappropriate right now, but after watching, I decided that it actually feels perfect. Ilia’s performance is very somber. Also very beautiful.

Ilia skated to "Hope." Which 1. We all need hope right now. And 2. I was excited seeing he was going to skate to it. So much passion on there. I'll never get tired of it. He was spectacular on there.

Nice, good for Ilia. I'm also happy to see that the finalists are actually collegiate/amateur athletes or from sports that don't get a lot of primetime love, like volleyball, fencing, etc. Some of the semi-finalists in the first round were Katie Ledecky (!!), Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Bobby Finke, etc, all major Olympic athletes with multiple OGMs. I was like this does not seem like a fair comparison!

In a teleconference today, Malinin talked about training, coping with the loss of lives from the mid-air collision in January, pressure at Worlds and more.

The 20-year-old already has some ideas of what direction he wants to go in terms of music for his new programs. He also shared the possibility of either bringing back a program or keeping one from this season.

“I’ve been liking the short this year, so it might be a bigger possibility that I might keep it for the Olympic year,” he said. “But we will have to see with the long program or, you know, as more time goes on, if I change my mind or something changes.”

I'm in San Francisco for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 for the NCAA men's basketball tournament. But I'll be wearing my Quad God socks today and Saturday.
